Light exposure in evening speed up the aging process inside your eyes, study finds.
Researchers are finding that the timing of light exposure may be just as important as the amount of light we receive. During the day, natural blue rich light helps regulate the body's internal clock, boosts alertness, and supports healthy vision. In the evening, however, bright artificial light from LED lighting and digital screens can suppress melatonin, the hormone that helps regulate sleep and coordinates many of the body's overnight repair processes. Scientists believe that regularly disrupting this cycle may contribute to faster biological aging of the eyes over time.
As we age, the eyes become less efficient at repairing damage caused by oxidative stress and everyday light exposure. Poor sleep and disrupted circadian rhythms may increase inflammation, reduce cellular maintenance, and place additional stress on retinal cells. Researchers are investigating whether long term evening light exposure could contribute to age related eye conditions by interfering with these natural protective mechanisms rather than causing immediate damage itself.
Scientists recommend exposing your eyes to plenty of natural daylight in the morning while reducing bright screen and indoor light exposure during the two to three hours before bedtime. Supporting the body's natural day and night rhythm may help protect not only healthy sleep but also the long term health of the eyes as they age.
