The Pull part 3. Most boundary slips don’t start big. They start small and kind: five more minutes, a quick reply, a session moved, then another.
None of it feels like a problem in the moment. But a blurry frame can be confusing for clients, especially those who’ve been hurt in relationships. And it costs us too.
One question I come back to: would I be comfortable explaining this to my client out loud?

The Pull part 2. “You’re the only one who gets me.” A lot of therapists know this sentence, and how good it can feel to hear.
But it’s often where the pull starts. Feeling special. Feeling like someone’s healing depends on us. Our job isn’t to be someone’s only one. It’s to help them build more people who get them.
Therapists, what goes through your mind when you hear it?

THE PULL. Welcome to my series on boundaries, from a therapist still working on holding boundaries to the therapist I was who needed more of them.

Brainspotting vs. EMDR: which one is “better”? 🩹
As a therapist trained in both, here’s how I think about it:
✨ Brainspotting is like ripping the bandaid off and going right to the core of the pain. It can be more direct, and sometimes that’s what’s needed.
✨ EMDR, in my opinion, lays more groundwork. We start by examining the bandaid and then look at what’s underneath in small, manageable pieces.
Both are great tools. The right fit depends on the person, the situation, and the trauma. There’s no one-size-fits-all in healing.
Those are my thoughts 🤍 Have you tried Brainspotting or EMDR? I’d love to hear what it was like for you.

Just a couple thoughts on how we heal and can I heal!

Hi there! If you’re working with clients with DID, just a reminder to say hello when someone new shows up in session :)

Things you should be able to say to your therapist without them flinching:
→ I’m gay
→ I’m trans
→ I want to try a new name
→ I have a kink
→ I relapsed
→ I want to die
Not every therapist can handle every disclosure, and that’s a real problem. Our job is to hold space for the whole you, not just the parts that are easy to hear. If you’ve ever been judged or invalidated by a therapist for telling the truth, I’m sorry. That f*cking sucks, and you deserved better.
You can bring any of this to my office. I’ve got your back.
I’m an LMFT offering LGBTQIA+ affirming, sex-positive, trauma-informed therapy for young adults and adults. Telehealth across California, in person in Agoura Hills. Free 15-minute consults, link in bio.
If you’re in crisis right now, call or text 988.

It is very rarely specific client behaviors that scare me, it’s the greater systems at play.

veryone’s talking about the Cornell lawsuit and the group chat named in it. I want to talk about the first group chat.
As a therapist, I hear versions of this story constantly, and it rarely starts in college. It starts in middle school hallways and group texts. “Go do it, she wants you.” “You’re not gonna?”
That’s not hype. That’s coercion.
And then the next day, she’s the slut. That label is a second harm, and it’s often the one people carry for years: as shame, as self-blame, as not trusting their own memory.
It hurts boys too. Boys pushed to prove they’re men. Boys who aren’t believed when it happens to them. Boys who watched and didn’t stop it, and still think about it.
So next time you hear that word, don’t ask what she did. Ask what happened.
Including to yourself. If any of this landed somewhere personal, that makes sense. It was never yours to carry.

A little response.. I could talk about this for ages. Confidentiality is real and there are many therapists, with good intentions, who out of their own fear break client confidentiality. Your fear does not give you permission to break confidentiality, it is a legal issues backed by federal and state law.
