Zinc supports your gut…but more isn’t always better.

Zinc plays an important role in maintaining the intestinal lining and supporting the gut barrier.

But, it also plays a role in brain health.

And this is where the gut-brain connection gets especially interesting.

Persistent diarrhea can increase zinc losses, potentially contributing to zinc deficiency. At the same time, zinc deficiency may affect intestinal barrier function, which can cause leaky gut, and contribute to brain inflammation.

But, chronically taking high doses of zinc can interfere with copper status.

Copper is important for enzymes involved in neurotransmitter metabolism, including the conversion of dopamine to norepinephrine.

So when we’re talking about nutrients (and supplements), more isn’t always better.

⚖️Balance matters…and so does a personalized approach.

We often think about the gut as the place where digestion happens.

But your gut is also constantly communicating with your brain.

Your microbiome produces metabolites and interacts with immune, hormonal, and nervous system pathways that can influence how the brain responds to its environment.

Which means your gut may be sending your brain information that helps shape things like stress response, mood, and nervous system function.

And this is one reason I find the gut-brain connection so fascinating.

Supporting mental wellness isn’t always about looking at the brain in isolation.

Sometimes, we need to look downstream at the gut, too.

Because the question isn’t just “What’s going on in the brain?”

It can also be:

“What signals is the gut sending?”

Save this if you want to learn more about the gut-brain connection. 🧠✨

Did you know passionflower and benzodiazepines work on the same calming system in the brain?

Both can influence GABA signaling, which is essentially the brakes for your brain.

And there’s some interesting research behind this…

Researchers randomly assigned 36 people with generalized anxiety disorder to receive either passionflower extract or oxazepam, a benzodiazepine, for 4 weeks.

Both groups experienced improvements in anxiety symptoms, and at the end of the study, there was no significant difference between the groups.

Pretty interesting, right? 👀

Did you know zinc is one mineral that tends to be insufficient in people with ADHD?

Zinc plays an important role in brain health and neurotransmitter function, including dopamine signaling—which is one reason it has gotten attention in ADHD research.

But here’s where it gets interesting…

More zinc isn’t necessarily better.

Over time, high-dose zinc supplementation can interfere with copper levels, and copper is also needed for your neurotransmitters.

🎯The goal is to look at the bigger picture and determine what your body actually needs because even essential nutrients can cause problems when the balance is off.

✨And that’s exactly why individualized nutrition support matters.

Could a plant really work as well as a benzodiazepine for anxiety?

One small study actually compared the two.

Researchers randomly assigned 36 people with generalized anxiety disorder to receive either passionflower extract or oxazepam, a benzodiazepine, for 4 weeks.

Both groups experienced improvements in anxiety symptoms, and at the end of the study, there was no significant difference between the two groups.

Interesting, right?

When you think about zinc, you might think about immune health.

But zinc plays another important role that deserves more attention: supporting the structure and function of the intestinal mucosal barrier.

Your intestinal lining is an important part of your gut’s defense system. And maintaining healthy zinc levels appears to be important for maintaining that barrier.

In fact, both zinc deficiency and excess can disrupt zinc homeostasis and have been associated with intestinal conditions including IBS and inflammatory bowel disease.

⛔️ It’s important to note that more zinc isn’t necessarily better. Zinc supplementation should be individualized based on the bigger picture, including dietary intake, symptoms, and potential nutrient interactions.

If you have IBS, zinc is one nutrient worth paying attention to. 👀

A recent article highlights research showing that zinc supplementation may help improve IBS symptoms, particularly in people experiencing diarrhea.

And there’s an interesting connection here:

💩 Persistent diarrhea → increased zinc losses → zinc depletion

But it can go the other way, too:

Zinc deficiency → diarrhea → further zinc losses

And suddenly, you have a vicious cycle.

This is one reason I’m always looking beyond the symptom itself. If someone is experiencing ongoing diarrhea, it may not be enough to simply focus on managing the diarrhea, we also want to consider what repeated losses may be doing to nutritional status.

Of course, zinc isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution for IBS, and supplementation should be individualized. But it’s a great reminder that nutrient status and digestive symptoms can influence one another in both directions.
