Whitmire Rescue Squad

Whitmire Rescue Squad "Cutting Cars and Tending Scars Since 1963" An Original Board of Directors incorporated the Whitmire Rescue Squad as a South Carolina Corporation in 1963.

The Whitmire Rescue Squad was founded in 1962 by a group of area citizens concerned with the lack of an organized process to assist in the search for lost persons, recovery of drowning victims, and the extrication of auto crash victims. The Squad acquired a truck and a boat and began emergency response. The Squad became active in regional responses traveling throughout the upstate to assist with r

escue and recovery efforts. When ambulance service became unavailable in the Whitmire area, the Squad expanded its role to include emergency medical service. The Squad upgraded its ambulance service to include trained attendants before state law required such and was one of the first licensed ambulance providers in the state. The Squad continued to be a progressive service becoming the first ambulance service in Newberry County to provide an advanced level of care through the EMT Intermediate program. The Squad was one of two services in the state to participate in a pilot study of the use of automatic defibrillation, a program now in use statewide. The first Squad in the county to operate a rescue vehicle specifically designed for the purpose, rescue technology has continued to be a major focus of the organization. The Squad quickly became a reliable source of community service that has been tapped by various organizations. Community events such as street dances, Christmas Cheer Fund, Open Houses, Santa Clause Party for the community's Children are but a few examples. The Squad has remained on the forefront of emergency response through the years and continues to evolve as the field and art of rescue does.

Hello everyone and happy football season! Whether you’re cheering on your wolverines or whatever college and pro teams you support, remember to and be mindful of cramps and concussions. If you have a student athlete, make sure that they are properly stretching and consuming enough water. If your athlete isn’t feeling 110%, make sure that they are getting adequate rest and taking it easy on off days.

Yesterday we held our monthly training session for the Squad. Due to the heat, we brought the team inside to work on sharpening our communication skills through the ‘Paint the Picture’ drill.

Rescue members were given radios and then split into teams of two. One rescuer was given a pre-drawn image and the other member given a blank piece of paper and a pen. The two, in completely separate rooms, had to work by radio communication only to copy the image onto the blank piece of paper with as much detail as possible. This helped us fortify the importance of clear, active communication in our line of work.

We also continued working through the rope rescue discipline by continuing our conversation of artificial high directionals and beginning the conversation of resultant forces and critical angle theory. Members learned to set up one of our AHD’s in easel a-frame tripod configuration which is just one of many ways we can use this equipment to help you in a complex rescue.

Though we’re volunteer and have other personal responsibilities to our jobs and families, we make every effort to be ready to help you no matter how unique the scenario.

Hello everyone and happy back to school season! As summer winds down and kids are packing up their lunchboxes and showing off their school supplies, remember to and be mindful of traffic patterns with the school buses as they pick up the neighborhood kids. Make sure that the kids are up to date on vaccines and have plenty of hand sanitizer and tissues in their backpacks. Know that we are here for you, from paper cuts to runny noses.

At tonight’s meeting, members played a “Find-and-Operate Scavenger Hunt.” Members drew a card that related to a piece of equipment, which they had to locate, operate, and discuss troubleshooting methods. Many items from both our medical and technical rescue cache were included in the exercise.

Drills like this keep us ready to serve you when the need comes.

This morning, our certified EMT’s and Paramedics participated in a webinar discussing ’Medical Considerations for Technical Rescue’.

This course viewed our trade strictly from the patient care standpoint, focusing on medical assessment and treatment of injuries seen during trench collapses, building collapses, high-angle rope rescue/at-height incidents, confined spaces, and vehicle/machinery entanglement. A few examples include suspension trauma and crush injury.

We are fully committed to staying ready to help our neighbors when the need arises.

Hello all and happy spring! While you’re getting ready for summer or heading out for spring break, we’re here to remind you that April is Distracting Driving Awareness Month. There are plenty of things that can take our attention away from the road, from checking out a billboard, answering a phone call or even singing along with the radio. Be sure you’re by being mindful of the speed limit and the other drivers around you. Happy driving!
