An announcement you have all been waiting for! Barika’s baby is a boy, and his name is Nkuba. 🦍🎉

Pronounced n-KOO-buh, his name was chosen by his care team to honor the Nkuba Conservation Area, a community-managed reserve in the Democratic Republic of the Congo established and managed by the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund.

This protected area helps safeguard critically endangered Grauer’s gorillas while supporting local community members who work as trackers and conservationists. While Nkuba is a western lowland gorilla, his name connects his story here at the Zoo to the larger work being done to protect gorillas in the wild.

The name Nkuba can also be associated with “rain” or “lightning” in Central African languages, and as a surname, it is often connected to strength, power, and leadership.

A strong name for a very special little one. Welcome, Nkuba. 🧡

As an RN and IBCLC, I see every day how important programs like WIC are for families in our communities.

For more than 30 years, WIC has helped ensure that pregnant women, breastfeeding parents, infants, and young children have access to nutritious food and essential support. Now, funding cuts threaten that mission, potentially forcing programs to turn away eligible families and reducing access to healthy foods like fruits and vegetables.
WIC isn't a luxury. It's a proven public health investment that improves maternal and infant health, supports breastfeeding, and helps families during some of the most vulnerable times in their lives.

I struggle to understand why we continue to debate whether babies, children, and new parents deserve access to healthy food while discussing tax breaks for those who need them the least. The strength of a community is reflected in how it cares for its most vulnerable members.

Please take a moment to use the link below to contact your elected officials and tell them that we must continue supporting families in need. Every child deserves a healthy start, and every family deserves access to the resources that help them thrive.

🌈 Happy Pride Month from B**b Nerds! 🤓💖

At B**b Nerds, we believe every family deserves evidence-based, compassionate, judgment-free feeding support.

Breastfeeding, chestfeeding, pumping, induced lactation, co-lactation, donor milk, formula feeding, or a combination of the above—there is no one "right" way to build and feed a family.

This Pride Month, we celebrate LGBTQ+ parents, parents-to-be, and all the beautiful ways families are created.

Your family is valid.
Your feeding goals matter.
You deserve support that respects who you are.

Whether you're navigating pregnancy, adoption, surrogacy, induced lactation, chestfeeding, pumping, or simply trying to figure out what works best for your family, B**b Nerds is here to help.

Because feeding support should be for everyone. 🌈🍼

Happy Pride Month!

Happy Mother’s Day from B**b Nerds 🤓💖

To the moms doing midnight feeds, reheating the same coffee 4 times, crying in the bathroom, Googling baby p**p colors at 2am, pumping in the car, cluster feeding through exhaustion, and still showing up every single day…
You’re doing a good job.
Even when it doesn’t feel graceful. Even when breastfeeding is hard. Even when motherhood feels chaotic, sticky, loud, emotional, and mildly unhinged.
You are still a good mom.
Today isn’t about perfection. It’s about survival, love, comfort, safety, and showing up for your tiny humans over and over again.
So this is your reminder from B**b Nerds:

💖 The baby doesn’t need perfect. 💖 They need YOU. 💖 And you’re already enough.

Happy Mother’s Day to every kind of mom, every feeding journey, and every family.

Today I met with Noah Taylor, who is running for U.S. Senate in Kansas against incumbent Senator Roger Marshall.

We discussed increasing access to lactation care for Medicaid recipients and why supportive, preventative breastfeeding care should not be out of reach for families simply because of their insurance coverage.

The benefits of breastfeeding for both parent and baby are widely known but the system often creates barriers to the evidence-based lactation support families need to meet their feeding goals.

We talked about how improving access to IBCLC care can improve maternal and infant health outcomes, reduce complications, and better support Kansas families.

Breastfeeding support is preventative healthcare and families deserve access to that care.
