Love seeing when diet changes can reverse disease progression
💥Research Highlight on the Ketogenic Diet and Alzheimer’s💥🧠!
Recently, the effects of a 10-week clinically prescribed ketogenic diet was investigated in a 68-year-old APOE4 positive male patient diagnosed with both mild Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) and Type-2 Diabetes (T2D). In addition to a ketogenic diet, intermittent fasting and 30-minutes of exercise was integrated into the protocol 3 days per week.
Both carrying an APOE4 allele and T2D puts one at risk for developing AD due to insulin resistance and reduced glucose metabolism in the brain. Ketones are a known alternative brain energy source to glucose and has been shown to supply energy directly to the brain even when glucose metabolism is impaired.
In this particular case study, after the 10-week intervention, the patient normalized his HgA1c, fasting glucose, fasting insulin, and blood lipids. He also restored his insulin sensitivity and reduced his risk for cardiovascular disease. Lastly, his memory, cognition, and verbal fluency scores increased significantly. Remarkable results!
The ketogenic diet is a powerful nutritional tool and as shown here can work on a systemic level that may be able to target concomitant metabolic conditions. We’ll be taking a deep dive into this topic at MHS 2020 - tickets will be released soon! To read the full study, click the link in our bio or visit:
