Raising Chickens Herbally I come from a family of farmers on both sides, and that heritage has always felt right to me deep in my bones. It made perfect sense to me.

MoonlightMileHerbs.com I right away took to gardening as a small child and it has remained a life-long infatuation. I thought plants were no different than myself as a person, and I accepted this as

truth, as perhaps only a child would. These plants were people in their own right, with their own ways how they lived life, which had nothing to do with me, but, we could still be friends. And this thought extended to everything around me. I have ended up having respect for all other living beings on this planet, whether they are people, animals, plants, trees, stones or mother earth. It comes from my heart and has everything to do with how I move in this world. I started poultry keeping in 1999, on a small 6-acre herb farm in Willis, MI. You may find me somewhat of a rebel. I don’t always agree with conventional "wisdom", especially when it comes to poultry keeping. My opinion is, the current backyard chicken keeping style, is largely defined by poultry product corporations. These entities have and still do, work hand in hand with large commercial poultry operations. Which doesn’t have much relevance to your backyard chicken keeping. If you like to follow a scientific-only path with all the "T’s" crossed and "I’s" dotted, what I do may not agree with you. Not that I don’t respect science, it is just not in the driver seat for me. I am not one to play it safe and dutifully follow a well-worn path. I am a free thinker and like to understand things on my own terms. I do like to play it with a lot of common sense, utilizing my extensive herbal training, with my eyes wide open on nature and with a good communication with my birds. As an herbalist, I want to support my poultry’s health the same way I support mine. This is a holistic approach using a lot of different kinds of herbal methods, using herbs that I harvest and remedies I create. I am an ascribed nativist when it comes to herbs. I think mother earth provides us with wild native herbs (aka weeds) that gives us antidotes to a myriad of health issues we may encounter. Using native herbs this way is even more true and intuitive to animals, who live closer to the earth than people do now. Their natural relationship is still very close, while the gap with people has widened. I started developing herbal remedies for my flock because, quite frankly there were none to be had. I had to either go with the flow and accept veterinary science (which is still not too well versed in treating backyard poultry health) or develop my own. It was a no brainer, except at that point I really had no blueprint in which to follow except for my training as an herbalist. I had to consult the only experts I knew. My birds and the herbs. I thought it would be an easy task to simply make some basic herbal medicine and I would be on my way. I was soon to learn how little I really knew. It soon dawned on me that I would have to see it from a bird’s point of view and have to understand their relationship with not only herbs, but with nature. It took many years of intense observation, working with many types of herbs, and just immersing myself in nature. The products I ended up creating is from all that. It is defined by connection and relationship. It is not only the most effective herbal medicine I could have created for my poultry; it has also included me into my own place within nature. And, it has deepened my love for the earth which is really healing. I hope by using my products you can experience the same, and narrow that gap and feel the love from mother earth. It can be a good point to start the conversation. There is still more for me to learn and do, and I hope you join me on our journey.

The land management is going well. I am almost at the halfway point. Yesterday I cleared an area that had sat around for the last few years, including logs from a tree I had cut down I have to make another pass and then I will be all set until next year for more work on that area. I now have brush pile #4 to burn. I think next year I might have enough space cleared to finally plant a sugar maple that I have always wanted!

Next weekend, I hope to get my porch cleared with the boxes of jars stored in the barn. Then I can power wash the deck, the sidewalk and culverts that line the spring bulb garden. I am waiting for that to see 100 years of grime washed away.

While I am doing all this land cleaning, I have to keep maintaining the gardens with w**ding and mowing. I was able to also mow the fruit/berry orchard this weekend. I need to w**d the garlic bed and cut the scapes. I also have a few more peppers and basil plants to put in the garden. Moving right along.

The storms came through last night and I slept through it! We had all the watches and I was hearing live the damage as the storm was progressing as it came from the west. It looked intense, but it came through so late, I was too tired even for a big storm. I did keep my phone on the weather app in case I needed to hear an alert to seek shelter.

I checked around this morning and did not see any trees down, or damage. But a neighbor just around the corner had a big tree fall over onto his neighbors yard. When I walk Pearl this evening I will have to go down and see. So glad the power stayed on too. Today's weather is absolutely beautiful and my windows are back open.

The weather continues to be crazy, now with the heat. We have had high humidity and temps and after today, it is going to cool back down. Right now, we are under a tornado watch for the next few hours. We should get some rain too, but I hope the high winds don't cause use to lose power. Some places have from the storms yesterday, and I can't imagine not having AC due to power outage. Fingers crossed we get through this storm with no problems.

The temps are more like August than June. 90 degree weather is not real usual at the very beginning of summer. We did get an inch of rain yesterday, but so far all the storms have skipped my area today. We are supposed to get some rain tonight, so we will see. The beans have popped up in the garden.

So I stayed indoors today and finished my class, acing my test. One more class to go, which I think starts in July some time. I worked with my new assistant and we got orders out today too. Other than that I have been monitoring the trail cam and no sign of Mr. Gray. Yesterday was some peacocks, Pip my barn cat and even a blue jay! Then early evening a c**n move in, which I was surprised since it wasn't dark yet. So I trapped him. Today, only a couple of peacocks were visiting the bowl all afternoon. They have a ton of food in the pen, but no, they have to hog the bowl of cat food. I might start putting food out during the day in his old apartment. I don't think he will venture that far out of the woods, but I guess I don't know for sure. I will just keep trying.

This is one of my new roses this year. LOOK at that color! I want this color on my house. But then, I would have to change the color palette of all the other colors. Fragrant and beautiful. The flower heads are small. I also have another one that is white with just a bare hint of purple. I will have to find the pics I took It currently has dropped the blooms that it had so far.

I finally got the trail cam set up. I needed more help from customer support to get my WIFI hooked up to it. So I can get alerted and watch on my phone no matter where I am. I am not running it tonight. I don't have any food out. All I would probably see is c**ns eating anyway.

I have dispatched 3 c**ns so far. Last night I caught an opossum and let him go. I don't have any grief with them. They seem to be around to scavenge eggs the birds might lay out in the yard. They are not destructive ripping stuff apart like c**ns are. I hope I see Mr. Gray on video tomorrow.

I will try this again. I tried to post last night, but it never landed on FB. My internet connection and my old computer go wonky sometimes. What I was talking about was this interesting predicament I have going on with Mr. Gray.

He apparently took a big scare with Pearl charging him (on leash). Pearl didn't get far, but Mr. Gray didn't understand the leash (and me holding it) and took it as an ambush. We were walking back from the barn and Mr. Gray was under the porch. I didn't see him sitting there, but Pearl did. If I would have been paying attention, it never would have happened. Pearl likes to do this to the birds too, but if I see what she is looking at (and she is always looking for opportunity), I can say "NO" and shorten her leash so she is walking beside me. She then behaves and she knows I know what is going on in her brain. But. If I am not paying attention, which happens occasionally, she probably feels the lax in the leash and will make the lunge. The peafowl will also come up to tease her, so I have that going on too..lol. I have a bunch of wild children.

So I am trying to win back Mr. Gray's trust. I finally saw him yesterday, but he took off as soon as I approached where he was eating in the w**ds by the ditch. It is the first time I have seen him in a couple of weeks. It is good he hasn't left the area and he is still depending on me to feed him. I finally got the trail cam charged and I will hook it up on a nearby tree. Then I can watch him and figure out his schedule and his movements. I hope that when I know his schedule I can put food down around those times so he knows it is coming from me.

If I do win his trust back, I am not sure how it will go with him and Pearl. I still have to take Pearl out twice a day. I can keep Pearl out of the backyard, and I usually do because that is where the peafowl like to hang out and the other chickens are free ranging. That is what Mr. Gray was doing for a long time, but then he migrated to the house, under the porch and moved out between the house and barn, which is where he was tussling with territory with the barn cats.

Finally, I am ready for the scorching heat wave we are going to have later this week. The birds have totally ventilated housing and it is mostly shaded by the big maple and oak trees. I have 5 peahens brooding on eggs and 1 chicken hen. I better think about where to set up a baby chick station so the chicks can reach to eat and drink. I still have baby Spangles in the house to go outside. The year of the chicken!

I took down the rest of the plastic on the big pen and called it a week for the heavy lifting. Well, 8 days to be exact. It was a good stopping point, and quite frankly, I think my wrist deserves to rest. I only have one more area in the front yard, to the side to straighten out. I have branches to pick up, some logs to cut and mowing. It is not a very big area at all, and I have run the mower in there a little bit already, scoping it out.

But honestly, I can't look at any more brush or logs at this point. I also have been avoiding using the chainsaws, rototiller and brush cutter due to my wrist anyway. The digging with the shovel and the screwdriver was enough to deal with. Also lifting the shingles I had to be careful. I did wrap my wrist before I did it, and moved slowly.

Today I introduced apples to the Dominique's, and they loved it. My little girls are growing up! They are all so cute. I opened up access to the hallway, so it gave them a 1/3 more space, even though the space they were in was still good. It gives them more room to run and access to some sun since it is on the south side.

Tonight I am working on my homework to turn in for my class and study for my test, which I will take tomorrow. Also tomorrow I plan on taking it easy and doing some shopping and maybe swing by a couple of plant nurseries to check prices. I am waiting on the sales for perennial herbs.

Today my body would not let me do what I did yesterday, which was really almost too much. I do need to rest for a minute. It also has been really hot outside the last couple of days, so I think I have been getting dehydrated too. I will tell you it has been a workout like I haven't had in a long time, what I have been doing the last week. I also can't believe all the little things around my farm I just said, "I will get to that later".

So today, I did get most of the transplanting done except the Joe Pye. The nettle roots are so thick, I am going to have to spend at least an hour tearing it apart. I am not sure I want to expend that much energy saving about 10 plants, especially since it already spreading along the road. I am also trying to be mindful of my wrist and not do too much everyday.

I also took down more plastic on the bird pen and only have two more sides to go. I want to finish this weekend because next week is supposed to be super hot and humid and I want to make sure the birds have total ventilation.

Finally, I think Mr. Gray has found the food I am putting out by the ditch. I can tell by how the food is eaten, which animal is eating it. Unfortunately, I can't get my trail cam hooked up yet because it needs to be charged, and I think the charger got corroded, so I have a new one on the way. Once I get that going, I am going to tack it to the nearby tree.

I thought I would post before I got started working today. Yesterday, I was so tired at the end of the day, I could barely eat dinner and then fall into bed.

I moved 1,200 lbs of shingles that were piled up next to my house, leftover from roofing my house. They over bought and I was left with about 15 bundles. Luckily I can hitch my wagon to my lawn tractor and hauled back and forth from the house to the barn. I just had to split up the bundles into about thirds so I could lift it.

If that wasn't enough, I mowed all the areas that I was hindered due to the shingle pile, brush and log piles, and the area where my sisters stuff was. Then I spread 4 bales of old hay on the resting tomato garden. I hadn't planned on that, but that is where I put the shingles at in the barn so I had to do something with the hay.

Today I am hoping I am going to finish transplanting. I am moving a couple of barberry bushes that are in the bird yard to the berry section of my fruit orchard. I am also going to move some mugwort and Joe Pye from the Mary garden so I can finally tear the rest of it apart. Meaning removing all the nettle which is what is left.

I also have now caught and had dispatched 2 c**ns with probably more to go. They have stopped messing with my garden, but dug up the pine tree I just planed, and I am really mad about that. Hopefully it rebounds and they didn't kill it. They are also roaming around my greenhouse. Earlier this spring they destroyed a whole box with frames of drawn out comb which I am also mad about. So, yeah, time to depopulate.
