Going back to school can bring up big worries for kids. Use these tips to talk to about their concerns and help them feel supported.

1️⃣ BE REALISTIC ABOUT CHALLENGES
As a parent, it’s tempting to focus on the positive: “It’s a brand new year!” Glossing over your child’s challenges can leave them feeling unheard and be a missed opportunity to talk about what’s really worrying them. Instead, acknowledge your child’s struggles and be direct — and strategic.

2️⃣ TAKE WORRIES SERIOUSLY
Worrying they won’t have any classes with friends, seeing a former crush in the hall, finding out they have another class with a teacher who “Hates me!” — all of these can be sources of real stress. Take care to validate kids’ feelings and give them opportunities to talk about what’s troubling them.

3️⃣ TALK ABOUT THE GOOD STUFF
Anxiety can be consuming for kids, blocking out good memories and casting a dark cloud over the upcoming year. But big, empty statements of encouragement (“I bet you’ll love it!”) can fall flat. Instead, try asking them about concrete things they’ve enjoyed in the past. Helping your child remember some of the good parts of school — activities or classes they like, favorite teachers, friends they’ve missed over the summer — can help fight.

4️⃣ DON’T PUSH
The goal should be to let your child know you’re aware that this can be a stressful time, and you’re there if they want to talk. You’ll have plenty of opportunities for conversations as the year goes on. For now, just knowing you’re there, and that you love and support them, can be enough.

Parents and caregivers of girls with ADHD have some important things to consider when thinking about their daughters’ educational needs. For some families, this may include choosing between different school options if they are available.

One question parents should consider asking their daughter's educational setting is: Can we attend a school open house or schedule a tour of the school?

See post for more detail.

This is a nice summary of common symptoms of autism in young children. If you have a school age child (5+) who is struggling and this post reminds you of them in their earlier years, we would love to see them at MindBridge Behaioral Health.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disability caused by differences in the brain. Some people with ASD have a known difference, such as a genetic condition. Other causes are not yet known. Scientists believe there are multiple causes of ASD that act together to change the most common ways people develop. We still have much to learn about these causes and how they impact people with ASD.

Contact your child’s doctor if you think your child might have ASD or if you have any other concerns about the way your child plays, learns, speaks, or acts.

ADHD can have a substantial impact on children and teens at school. Many students with ADHD may need more educational support than what is provided through the general education system. This support may come in the form of an Individualized Education Program (IEP) or a Section 504 Plan, formal educational supports mandated by federal laws designed to protect the rights of students with disabilities.

ADHD can look different in girls compared to boys with ADHD. Educational support plans should address the ways that ADHD symptoms may present differently from girl to girl. School accommodations for girls may include, but are not limited to:

🏫 Permission for frequent, planned breaks in class, for girls who lose focus easily

🏫 Check-ins with a school counselor to learn ways to manage mood anxiety, for girls who need emotional support

🏫 Participate in a small social group to learn friendship skills, for girls who are impulsive with peers

🏫 Seating near the teacher and away from distractions such as windows and high traffic areas, for girls who are easily distracted

🏫 Teacher provided checklist to help keep up with daily classroom routines, for girls who struggle with remembering

🏫 A reward system for following classroom rules about social vs. quiet time, for girls who are excessively chatty during quiet work times.

School demands many things that summer activities don’t — the ability to sit still, get organized, separate from their parents, etc. If your child suffers from anxiety, these demands can be very challenging. Here are 6 things parents need to know about starting school with vulnerable children:

1. MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEMS EMERGE AT BACK-TO-SCHOOL TIME: You can ease your child’s anxiety by modeling confidence and calm behavior, and by imposing structure in family life (mealtime, homework, and bedtime routines).

2. KIDS BRAINS ARE CHANGING DRAMATICALLY: The teen brain starts “pruning”— strengthening some synapses and eliminating many others and this temporary imbalance has been linked to teens’ erratic and risky behaviors, depression, and more. Set aside time each day to talk to your child about challenges and new experiences at school.

3. ANXIOUS PARENTS SEND ANXIOUS KIDS TO SCHOOL: Kids really are like sponges, absorbing the energy and adopting the behaviors around them. One of the most helpful things you can do is model calm, confident behavior.

4. TEACHERS MATTER, EVEN MORE THAN YOU THINK: Parents can get all kinds of information about a child from their teacher. Teachers are allies, and you should talk to them regularly.

5. HOMEWORK TIME IS CRUCIAL: Young children can benefit from their parents’ involvement during homework time. Parents should set aside time for a structured “homework session” each evening.

6. DON’T JUMP TO CONCLUSIONS: A lag in one area of development doesn’t mean a child has a disorder. If you think there might be a problem with your child’s development, talk to their teacher.
