We recently learned that Aetna updated its preventive nutrition coverage effective 8/15/2026. This nationwide change impacted hundreds of nutrition practices without notifying Aetna members or us.
What does this mean moving forward?
Nutritional care services previously covered at 100% with no cost-sharing may now be subject to a deductible, copay, or coinsurance. We are appealing visits impacted by this change; however, you may receive a bill from us if the appeals are denied.
What can I, the member, do?
We recommend calling Aetna Member Services to voice your opinion about this change. We have provided a basic script for you to use when you call:
Aetna changed its preventive nutrition policy, effective August 15, 2026, removing Z71.3 and causing services that had previously been covered at 100% with no cost-sharing to become subject to a copay or deductible. Please provide the written notice that was provided to me at least 60 days before this material reduction in coverage, identify the date that notice was sent, and identify the specific provision of my insurance policy that authorizes this mid-year change.
If no 60-day notice was provided, please explain the legal basis for applying this material reduction in benefits to services provided during my existing plan year.
