Triệu Thị Hương – From the Rice Fields to a New Beginning at Omamori Spa
Born in 1988 in Trại Cau, Thái Nguyên, Triệu Thị Hương is a woman whose life reflects resilience, devotion, and the quiet strength of someone who never stops trying to build a better future.
Hương married in 2008 and is now the mother of two sons, both healthy and currently attending school — one in high school and the other in middle school. Her husband, who is fully sighted, works freelance jobs and often travels far from home to support the family. She comes from a family of five siblings, including a younger sister who is also visually impaired and now works at Omamori Spa. It was this sister who introduced Hương to a new path in life.
As a child, Hương’s visual impairment was not immediately recognized. Around the age of four or five, her parents noticed that she struggled to see in the late afternoon and evening. After years of uncertainty, she was finally taken for medical evaluation while in fourth grade and was diagnosed with retinal degeneration — a progressive condition that slowly reduces vision and cannot be corrected through surgery.
Before discovering massage therapy, Hương’s life revolved around farming. She spent many years working in rice fields, planting corn, sweet potatoes, and other crops. Farming was already physically demanding, but limited vision made it even harder. She could tell whether a field was shallow or deep with water, but she could not see insects or pests affecting the crops. As a result, harvests were often more difficult and less productive compared to others.
Living close to her parents after marriage brought some comfort, as they helped support the family with agricultural work. Even so, life remained uncertain, often depending on weather, harvest outcomes, and seasonal income.
In mid-2023, Hương enrolled in a three-month massage training course in Thái Nguyên. Encouraged by her younger sister, she later made the decision to join Omamori Spa in December 2023. At first, her husband was hesitant. He worried about her traveling far from home for work, concerned she might face difficulties or be taken advantage of in an unfamiliar environment. With reassurance from her sister and growing confidence in the opportunity, he gradually supported her decision.
Her journey was not without setbacks. During her work, Hương experienced a thumb tendon injury related to the physical demands of massage therapy and spent three months recovering through treatment and rehabilitation. Even during this difficult period, she chose not to give up.
Today, Hương’s life feels more stable and secure. Unlike farming, where income depended heavily on uncertain harvests, massage therapy provides a more reliable livelihood. The work allows her to contribute financially, care for her children, and share responsibilities with her husband. She also helps care for her 80-year-old mother-in-law, balancing family life with her professional journey.
For Hương, Omamori Spa has become more than a workplace. It represents independence, opportunity, and a chance to reshape her future. Her story is a powerful reminder that even after years of hardship, it is never too late to begin again.
Through persistence, courage, and determination, Hương has transformed her life — proving that strength is not measured by what we can see, but by how we continue moving forward despite the obstacles in front of us.

Nguyễn Thị Ân – Rediscovering Strength and Purpose at Omamori Spa

Nguyễn Thị Ân was born and raised in Phú Xuyên, Hà Nội. After getting married, she moved to live with her husband’s family in Thái Hà, Hà Nội. Now 40 years old, Ân’s life has been shaped by resilience, adaptability, and a determination to keep moving forward despite unexpected challenges.

For many years, Ân did not realize that her worsening eyesight was caused by a medical condition. Growing up in the countryside, she believed her vision problems came simply from studying too much. It was only later that she learned she had retinitis pigmentosa, a progressive eye condition that slowly reduces vision over time.

Education was always important to Ân. She completed degrees at both the Hanoi National University of Education and the Vietnam National University of Forestry. During her years studying forestry, she began noticing significant changes in her eyesight. Over time, her vision continued to decline, and by 2020, she could no longer see well enough to continue teaching — a career she had once deeply valued.

Determined to remain active and independent, Ân joined the blind association in Đống Đa District. Through the organization, she was introduced to a telesales position at a dishwasher company. She worked there for five years, adapting as best she could. Eventually, reading text on a phone screen became too difficult, forcing her to leave the job.

The transition from being sighted to losing vision was one of the greatest challenges of her life. Daily routines became harder, and moving around unfamiliar spaces often led to bumps and accidents. In public, there were moments when people misunderstood her condition, reacting with impatience or insensitive comments when she accidentally walked into someone she could not see.

Even within her own family, there were times when others forgot about her visual limitations, asking her to do tasks that had become difficult or impossible. These moments could be painful, reminding her of how much life had changed.

Learning massage therapy also came with challenges. In the beginning, relying on touch rather than sight felt unfamiliar, and adapting to a new way of learning required patience and persistence. Yet Ân never gave up.

Her personal life brings both love and responsibility. She married before losing her vision and is now the mother of three children. Her eldest child, now 13 years old, lives with Down syndrome, intellectual developmental delays, and hyperactivity, requiring constant supervision and care. Her youngest child has immune thrombocytopenia, a condition that causes frequent illness and fatigue. To help support the family and care for the children, her husband left his accounting job to stay at home.

Ân discovered Omamori Spa through a visually impaired community group where she saw a recruitment post. Before applying, she had already heard positive things from friends who worked there and admired the supportive environment. Encouraged by what she learned, she decided to join.

At Omamori, she received patient guidance and encouragement from teacher Huy Mạnh and the team around her. Step by step, she developed her skills and confidence. Today, she has become a massage therapist, proud of how far she has come.

For Ân, Omamori is not just a workplace — it is a place where she feels understood and supported during this chapter of her life. She believes the environment suits her well, offering both stability and opportunities to grow.

Looking ahead, Ân hopes to continue improving her skills, deepen her knowledge, and one day fulfill her dream of opening her own spa. Her story is a reminder that even when life changes unexpectedly, strength can be rediscovered through courage, learning, and the willingness to begin again.

Canh’s Journey: From Loss to Purpose
Born in 1994 in Tam Quang, a mountainous commune in Nghe An province near Laos' border, Canh grew up in a farming family where hardship was part of daily life. As the youngest of three children, he witnessed resilience early on—especially from his older brother, who was born with a physical disability, and his father, who often struggled with illness.
Canh’s childhood took a life-changing turn at the age of 11, when he was diagnosed with retinal detachment. Despite multiple surgeries, his vision gradually faded until he became completely blind by the time he was in fifth grade. Forced to leave school, his future seemed uncertain.
With encouragement from the local blind association, Canh began rebuilding his life. He learned to make incense sticks, studied Braille, and later trained as a massage therapist. Alongside this, he developed basic computer skills designed for visually impaired individuals—opening new pathways for independence.
For nearly 15 years, Canh worked steadily in Nghe An, building both skill and confidence. Like many others, he faced setbacks during the COVID-19 pandemic, when the massage facility where he worked was forced to close. Yet he adapted—taking on different jobs and moved from one massage parlor to the others.
In 2025, driven by a desire for growth and better opportunities, Canh moved to Hanoi and joined Omamori Spa. This step marked a new chapter in his journey toward financial stability and personal development.
That same year, his family back home faced a devastating loss when severe flooding destroyed their rice fields, wiping out an entire harvest. With their land no longer suitable for rice cultivation, they were forced to change their livelihood. In response, Omamori Spa provided one ton of rice to help support Canh’s family through this difficult time.
Faith has always been an important part of Canh’s life. Although he once considered joining a religious order, circumstances led him to prioritize supporting his family, as he has become their primary provider. Today, he continues to work with determination, while holding onto a long-term dream: to one day serve in a community that cares for people with disabilities, the elderly, and those without support.
Canh’s story is one of resilience, adaptability, and quiet determination. Despite the challenges he has faced, he continues to move forward—building a life not only for himself, but also with the hope of giving back to others in need.

KHẮC TỚI'S STORY:
Toi, 27 years old and from Hiep Hoa, Bac Giang, is the oldest of three brothers. From birth, he's had a condition called retinitis pigmentosa, which means he can only see about 10% of what a person with normal vision can. Sadly, his younger brother also has the same condition since birth.

In 2011, when Toi was 13, he accidentally looked at a welding spark. After that, his right eye started seeing everything double. He was worried and asked his parents to take him to the doctor, but they didn't think it was serious, so he didn't get treatment. Five years later, his right eye completely lost its vision. Now, his whole world is seen through his left eye, with only 10% vision.

Even in elementary school, Toi faced many challenges. His classmates often bullied him, stealing and hiding his books. His family and teachers didn't protect him. In fact, his dad would hit him for losing things, and his teacher would scold him and make him find them. Despite this, Toi was a good kid. After school, he would help his family herd cows and work with his dad in the carpentry shop. In secondary school, because of his eye condition, other boys often misunderstood his gaze, thinking he was looking at them in a rude way. This led to many fights, and Toi had to fight back to protect himself. Luckily, his middle school teachers understood his situation and gave him a lot of care and affection.
Throughout the conversation, the saddest part of Toi's story was about his family. Unlike other children, Toi felt his parents didn't show him much affection. He grew up with his dad hitting and scolding him, and his mom being distant. When he was little, he was close to his parents, but around age 6, when he started understanding more, he grew distant from them. He clearly remembers one rainy day when he couldn't herd cows, so he went to a neighbor's house to play. When his dad found out, he hit Toi hard in the face. Even though his mom saw his mouth was swollen from the beating, she didn't say anything. Toi shared that his mom had no say in the family and never stepped in when his dad hit or yelled at him. His childhood passed by with sadness and no one to truly understand him.

After secondary school, his parents didn't want him to continue studying, so he had to drop out and start working. At first, he worked in his dad's carpentry shop, but they often argued. His dad didn't understand his vision problems and always expected him to work like someone with full sight. In late 2016, after many intense arguments, unable to handle the strictness and lack of understanding, Toi decided to leave his dad's shop. He started looking for other jobs, doing all sorts of difficult tasks like loading bricks, carrying cement, and assisting with construction and aluminum work.

A turning point came in 2017 when Toi was herding cows. Mr. Chuong, the Vice President of the Hiep Hoa District Association for the Blind, met him and offered to help. Understanding Toi’s situation, Mr. Chuong advised him to go to Hanoi to learn massage and acupressure instead of struggling with difficult jobs in his hometown. In early 2018, at the age of 20, Toi followed Mr. Chuong's advice and moved to Hanoi to study massage and acupressure at the National Training & Rehab Center for the Vietnamese Blind. After three months of study, Toi started working as a masseur at the Cau Giay District Association for the Blind. Later, he went back to study spinal manipulation for three months and was invited by the center's vice director to stay and work there.
In 2022, Toi decided to open his own small massage business in Ba Dinh District and asked his younger brother to join him. However, due to disagreements, his brother went back home. Also, because he didn't have enough money and lacked staff, he couldn't keep the business going, so it closed after nearly two years. Not giving up, in early 2024, Toi spent the first four months of the year traveling from North to South, wanting to experience different massage businesses across the country. He traveled through Da Nang, Hue, Nha Trang, Bao Loc, Da Lat, Ho Chi Minh city, and then returned to Nha Trang. It was there that he had the chance to meet his wife.

After that journey, he returned to Hanoi and started working at Omamori Spa, where he remains today. Thanks to his efforts and overcoming hardships, Toi has now bought his own house in Ocean Park, started a family, and is preparing to welcome his first child. Talking about how he met his wife, Toi smiles happily. He shared that they met by chance during his trip to Nha Trang for work that year. His wife has normal vision and currently works at Noi Bai airport. Toi shared that because he grew up in a family that lacked love, everything he does now is for his small family, where he has found love, comfort, and support to keep living. His simple wish is to go home to his wife every day after his shift. This simple wish shows how much Toi loves his family. He wants to take good care of his wife and child, ensuring his child grows up with everything they need and are happy, unlike his own childhood filled with sadness and hardship.

Despite being born with incomplete vision and growing up in a family without understanding or empathy, Toi has steadily risen, overcoming his circumstances to take control of his life. Today, he not only has a stable job and his own home but also a loving family. Toi has turned the difficulties of his childhood into motivation to build a new life filled with love, sharing, and hope. His story reminds us that no matter how difficult our starting point, if we don't give up, happiness will always be waiting at the end of the road.

Finding light in the darkness

Thin, 27 years old, was born and raised in Son Ha, Huong Son district, Ha Tinh province – a region in central Vietnam. He was born healthy, like any other child, attending school, playing, and living in the loving embrace of his family and friends. He was once a sports-loving, active student with dreams just like his peers. Tragically, an accident in ninth grade completely altered his life. While playing soccer with his classmates, the ball unexpectedly hit his face forcefully, causing his vision to gradually blur. He visited a district hospital, but the doctor advised him that his problem required a higher-level examination. At that moment, he sensed something was seriously wrong, and he was then transferred to the National Eye Hospital.

After a month of dedicated care from his family and doctors, his condition showed no improvement. The 15-year-old boy had to face the harsh truth that he would no longer be able to see the world clearly. He also had to drop out of school due to the difficulties caused by his eyes. From then on, physical pain compounded mental anguish. From a healthy, energetic student with a passion for sports, Thin fell into silence and negativity. Thin shared that during that period, he felt like a completely different person; he became disheartened, more timid, self-conscious, and at times, had extreme thoughts about life. He would spend his days locked in his room, keeping to himself, befriending the darkness, constantly believing that his life and future were over. After isolating himself, he would then frequently go out with friends to try and forget everything.

Thin's life continued this way after the incident until he had a motorcycle accident while out with a friend. His friend had to go to the hospital for stitches, but Thin was fortunately unharmed. However, when his mother found out, she cried a lot. Seeing his mother like that made him realize he needed to change, to find a way to earn money for his future, and to ease his parents' worries. Thin's parents were farmers, and he was also the eldest of three siblings, so he always carried the responsibility of helping his parents and supporting his younger siblings' education. This burden made him feel even more tormented and self-reproachful. Therefore, after everything, he picked himself up and moved forward.

He began researching jobs for the visually impaired in Ha Tinh and found work as a massage therapist to earn extra income. After working for a while, he wanted to seek other opportunities for better earnings. From there, he packed his bags and headed to Hanoi, looking for massage establishments. He found Omamori Spa through a friend, Mr. D**g, who is also a therapist at Omamori Spa. Thin studied diligently, training his hands to compensate for his eyes. He gradually adapted to a new lifestyle, the streets, and his work—one step at a time. Each day he learned and worked, Thin felt his life had more meaning. Not only could he support himself, but he could also ease his parents' burdens and send money home to help them raise and educate his younger siblings.

Today, the boy he once was has become a strong, independent, and confident visually impaired young man. Without light in his eyes, Thin has lit up his own life with resilience, filial piety, and the responsibility of being the eldest brother in his family. Thìn's story serves as a reminder that sometimes, it is in the darkness that one truly finds their inner strength.

Ms Hoang Thi Tinh: Lighting her own path
Ms. Tinh was born and raised in the mountainous region of Lang Son Province. At just eight months old, she contracted measles, and its severe impact stole her eyesight, leaving her completely blind. This unfortunate circumstance prevented her from attending school. Darkness enveloped her from a young age, but it never extinguished the extraordinary will and resilience within her.

Growing up, since she couldn't go to school, her daily routine involved the arduous work of helping her parents dry cassava on the hills and cultivate barren land. However, a turning point arrived in 2005 when she was 23. Ms. Tinh was among a group of visually impaired individuals in her local area recommended by the Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs of Lang Son province to study literacy in Hanoi, followed by a massage therapy course. This was her first time experiencing many new things, leaving her hometown with immense hope and a strong desire for independence and self-reliance. This opportunity truly opened up a brighter future for her.

After completing her course, Ms. Tinh decided to pursue a career in massage therapy to earn a living with her own hands. Initially, she worked in her hometown. Later, driven by a desire for new experiences, she embarked on a journey with friends to various provinces and cities across Vietnam, from Vinh P**c, Hanoi, to Nha Trang, then Hai Phong, and now back to Hanoi. She spent several months in each place, exploring and learning new things. Every place she visited left her with valuable experiences and lessons, shaping her into the Ms. Tinh she is today. Despite her visual impairment, she never let her circumstances limit her life; instead, she proactively chose her own path.

In 2022, Ms. Tinh knew about Omamori Spa through Facebook and had the opportunity to work there. Although she had prior experience in the profession, stepping into a new environment naturally brought challenges and unfamiliarity. She shared that there were times she felt discouraged and considered giving up. However, thanks to the dedicated encouragement and guidance from her colleagues, she gradually overcame obstacles and has remained with Omamori until now. Since joining Omamori, she's been very happy to work in a truly professional environment, free from the issues of intoxicated clients she sometimes encountered in her previous massage work. She feels her working environment has significantly improved, and she's very pleased about it. Ms. Tinh wrote to the teacher who accepted and trained her two years ago: "I want to thank you and everyone. Before joining Omamori, I researched it very carefully. In the beginning, I felt quite disheartened, and external factors made it even worse. Only now do I truly realize the many benefits Omamori brings to visually impaired people. About 3 or 4 months ago, I kept asking you to let me quit, but you kept encouraging me to stay, not letting me give up. During my training, I'm also very grateful to you, Mr. Manh, and Ms. Nhung for enthusiastically teaching me and helping me overcome the most difficult lessons. I can't express enough how much I appreciate you all. If there's anything I've done wrong since joining, please forgive me. Once again, I also want to thank all my colleagues for their enthusiastic guidance."

Ms. Tinh embarked on her learning and career transition at an age when she was no longer young. Furthermore, being completely blind and having no formal education from childhood made learning incredibly challenging. However, it's clear that with her thirst for knowledge and courage to step out of her comfort zone to explore new things, Ms. Tinh's life has turned a new page. She is truly an example for young people to follow. Today, Ms. Tinh is not only a highly skilled massage therapist but also a shining example of resilience, inspiring countless people around her. Though she cannot see light with her eyes, her life is radiating brightly in its own way – a light of faith in life and an unyielding desire to strive forward.

Trần Đức Trung, born in 2005 in Nam Trực, Nam Định, grew up in a working-class family with both parents employed as construction workers. From birth, he suffered from nystagmus, a condition that left him with very limited vision, only able to perceive blurry shapes and distinguish between light and dark. Trung's older sister also has the same condition, though her health is weaker.

Despite their difficult circumstances, Trung's parents were determined not to let him fall behind, and they made every effort to send him to school like other children. However, due to his impaired vision, Trung faced discrimination and teasing from his peers. He recalled feeling deeply saddened at times, though his childhood resilience helped him move forward. Later, he transferred to the Center for the Blind, where he began learning Braille and opened a new chapter in his life.

In 2019, at just 14 years old, Trung began learning massage therapy — the first and only profession he has pursued. After three months of training at the Provincial Center for the Blind in Nam Định, he started practicing in his hometown. Over five years of dedication, he refined his skills and developed a strong desire to grow further. Seeking a more dynamic and professional environment, Trung moved to Hanoi in 2024 to build his career. Through a friend’s recommendation, he discovered Omamori Spa, a place known for supporting visually impaired individuals in becoming professional therapists. After careful consideration, he officially joined Omamori in May 2024.

At Omamori Spa, Trung continues to pursue his passion while gaining valuable opportunities to learn and develop. He shared that adapting to the new environment was not too difficult, as the massage techniques were similar to the traditional “tẩm quất” he had practiced before. However, with most clients being international, he still faces challenges in communication. Determined to improve, Trung is actively learning English every day to better serve his clients and build confidence.

A special part of Trung’s journey is the companionship of Lệ, his partner and now his wife. They met during their school years and later reunited at Omamori Spa, where both work as therapists. In 2025, Trung and Lệ officially became husband and wife, marking a meaningful milestone in their lives. Today, they are also proud parents to a beautiful 2-month-old baby girl. Their relationship is not only built on love but also on shared understanding and mutual support, helping them overcome challenges and look toward the future together.

When asked about his plans ahead, Trung answered without hesitation, “I’ve never thought about doing another job because I truly love this work.” His dream is to continue growing professionally and, one day, open a small spa with his wife in their hometown, where they can pursue their passion while staying close to their family.

Wishing Trung, Lệ, and their little family continued strength, happiness, and success on their journey ahead. May their dedication and love continue to inspire many others.

Welcoming our new English Communication Program at Omamori Spa 🌿

We are excited to introduce a special English communication program for our new students, led by a passionate young volunteer, Keller.

Keller has been living in Vietnam for the past year as an international student studying psychology. What makes his contribution truly meaningful is not only his dedication, but also his effort to learn Vietnamese and use it to communicate and teach our visually impaired therapists. Teaching in a language that is not his mother tongue is never easy, yet he embraces the challenge with patience, empathy, and genuine care.

Through simple conversations, daily practice, and interactive lessons, Keller is helping our students build confidence in using English while creating a warm, supportive learning environment.

At Omamori Spa, we deeply appreciate his kindness and commitment. His presence is a beautiful reminder that connection goes beyond language, and that compassion can bridge any gap.
