🐄 FARM2VET SERIES #1 | SMART HEALTH STARTING AT THE FARM

As the first feature in the Farm2Vet Series, VISHC takes a closer look at Farm2Vet, one of the center’s flagship projects, which brings smart health innovation into a setting we do not always associate with public health: the farm.

💡 Farm2Vet was created to address a practical gap in animal healthcare. For many small-scale farmers, timely access to trusted veterinary advice can be limited. When livestock become sick, farmers often need guidance quickly, not days later.

💡 The platform aims to support more responsible antibiotic use in food-producing animals by giving farmers easier and lower-cost access to reliable veterinary services for disease diagnosis and treatment advice.

💡 What makes Farm2Vet especially interesting is that it is not only a support tool for individual farmers. The platform is also designed to collect data from small farmers and veterinary service providers, creating a potential surveillance system that can help identify antimicrobial resistance hotspots and inform outbreak prevention.

💡 This matters because antimicrobial resistance is one of today’s major global health threats. According to WHO, bacterial antimicrobial resistance was directly responsible for an estimated 1.27 million deaths globally in 2019 and was associated with 4.95 million deaths.

Farm2Vet shows how smart health can begin far beyond hospitals and clinics. By connecting veterinary knowledge, digital access and data-driven insight, the project addresses a public health challenge at one of its earliest points: the farm.

✨ SCIENTIFIC TALENT RESEARCH CAMP 2026 | HEALTH SCIENCE KICKS OFF AT VINUNI

The Scientific Talent Research Camp 2026 - Health Science officially kicked off at VinUniversity on August 17 - 18.

The first two days gave participants a chance to get familiar with the program, meet fellow young researchers, and start stepping into a real research environment.

Through the opening sessions, participants began exploring how scientific research is approached in practice and what it takes to develop a research idea into something meaningful.

This is only the beginning of a longer journey, with participants continuing to work on their own research projects under the guidance of experienced mentors.

🤖 VISHC-AFFILIATED RESEARCHER CONTRIBUTES TO STUDY ON GENERATIVE AI IN HEALTHCARE EDUCATION

VISHC shares a recent publication updating the contribution of Prof. Andrew W. Taylor-Robinson, Principal Investigator at VISHC and Professor of Microbiology & Immunology at the College of Health Sciences, VinUniversity, to this international study. The article, “Generative artificial intelligence adoption and use in teaching and training healthcare professionals in higher education in the United States: a cross-sectional study,” was published in BMC Medical Education.

💡 The study explores how generative AI is being adopted by faculty and students in higher education, with important implications for healthcare professional training.

💡 The findings point to both opportunities and challenges: while GenAI tools are increasingly used in learning, teaching, and research, formal training and institutional guidance remain limited. The study highlights the need for more structured support to help future healthcare professionals use AI responsibly and effectively.

🏆 VISHC FELLOW NGUYEN DAI NGHIA’S TMLR FEATURED PAPER TO BE PRESENTED AT ICML 2026

VISHC proudly recognizes a new academic milestone achieved by Nguyen Dai Nghia, a VinUniversity alumnus and VISHC Fellow, whose recent paper on continual learning has been selected as a Featured paper at Transactions on Machine Learning Research (TMLR) and will be presented at ICML 2026 in Seoul, South Korea.

Currently a second-year Ph.D. student in Computer Science at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Nghia focuses on machine learning and causal inference, with an emphasis on healthcare applications.

His featured paper addresses a major challenge in continual learning known as catastrophic forgetting, where AI models lose previously acquired knowledge after learning new tasks. The study introduces a flexible approach using small adapters that help models recover earlier knowledge while continuing to learn over time.

This recognition highlights the potential of VISHC-affiliated scholars to contribute meaningful and technically rigorous work to the international machine learning research community. It also reflects the value of early research exposure, mentorship, and international collaboration in supporting young Vietnamese researchers on their academic journeys.

🦿 VISHC PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR LEADS INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH ON LOW-COST WEARABLE KNEE REHABILITATION DEVICE

VISHC is thrilled to share a milestone in an ongoing knee rehabilitation project, led by Dr. Thai Mai Thanh, Principal Investigator at VISHC and Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the College of Engineering and Computer Science, VinUniversity.

💡 The project, KNEESENSE, introduces a low-cost wearable system for real-time monitoring of knee rehabilitation and has been published in Scientific Reports, a Nature Portfolio journal. Designed to support more accessible home-based rehabilitation, the device can monitor knee joint movement during exercises through a wearable hydraulic filament sensor integrated into a knee pad and connected to a mobile application.

💡 With affordability, portability, and usability at its core, KNEESENSE reflects the potential of smart health technologies to support patients and clinicians in tracking rehabilitation progress more conveniently. The project also highlights the value of interdisciplinary and international collaboration between VinUniversity, the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and UNSW Sydney in developing practical healthcare solutions.

📍 Project Information
Rising demand in diagnostics, environmental monitoring, and food safety is driving the development of portable, low-cost biosensors; this project develops compact platforms for rapid detection of bacteria, antibiotic residues, and heavy metals in healthcare, environmental, water, and food samples. At the BioEngineering Lab (BEL), students will design electrochemical and optical sensors, build prototypes, analyze signals, and optimize performance, gaining interdisciplinary experience across engineering, materials science, and biomedical/environmental applications.
The research team includes Asst. Prof. Tran Thi Mai (Principal Investigator), Asst. Prof. Do Danh Cuong and Prof. Andrew Taylor-Robinson.
