🦿 VISHC PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR LEADS INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH ON LOW-COST WEARABLE KNEE REHABILITATION DEVICE

VISHC is thrilled to share a milestone in an ongoing knee rehabilitation project, led by Dr. Thai Mai Thanh, Principal Investigator at VISHC and Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the College of Engineering and Computer Science, VinUniversity.

💡 The project, KNEESENSE, introduces a low-cost wearable system for real-time monitoring of knee rehabilitation and has been published in Scientific Reports, a Nature Portfolio journal. Designed to support more accessible home-based rehabilitation, the device can monitor knee joint movement during exercises through a wearable hydraulic filament sensor integrated into a knee pad and connected to a mobile application.

💡 With affordability, portability, and usability at its core, KNEESENSE reflects the potential of smart health technologies to support patients and clinicians in tracking rehabilitation progress more conveniently. The project also highlights the value of interdisciplinary and international collaboration between VinUniversity, the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and UNSW Sydney in developing practical healthcare solutions.

VISHC-AFFILIATED RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS AI’S POTENTIAL IN SKIN CANCER PREDICTION

Artificial intelligence is continuing to reshape the future of medicine, and a recent collaboration involving Prof. Ravi Iyer, a VISHC-affiliated researcher at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, offers a strong example of that potential in action. Working with Mayo Clinic, Prof. Iyer and his team are contributing to the development of an AI-driven tool combined with genetic data to help physicians better predict outcomes for patients with cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC).

The research integrates AI, pathology, and genomics to improve risk assessment and support more informed clinical decision-making. By helping identify which patients may face a higher risk of disease progression, the tool has the potential to support more personalized care strategies and enhance how doctors plan treatment.

For VISHC, this advancement highlights the growing impact of data-driven and AI-enabled approaches in precision medicine. It also reflects the importance of international research collaboration in accelerating innovations that can improve diagnosis, prognosis, and patient care.

VISHC RESEARCHERS ADVANCE AFFORDABLE AND ACCESSIBLE VIRAL TESTING

🔹 A new research initiative involving VISHC Principal Investigators at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is opening up promising possibilities for more affordable, accessible viral testing. The project brings together Prof. Brian Cunningham, Prof. Enrique Valera Cano, and Prof. Rashid Bashir to develop a portable, low-cost, and rapid testing platform that can detect HIV, hepatitis B (HBV), and hepatitis C (HCV) from a small blood sample.

🔹 By focusing on speed, affordability, and ease of use, this work aims to help address one of the key barriers in infectious disease care: limited access to timely diagnostic tools. A more practical and widely deployable testing system could support earlier detection, improve screening in resource-constrained settings, and ultimately contribute to better health outcomes for patients and communities.

This milestone reflects the strength of interdisciplinary collaboration across engineering, biomedical science, and healthcare innovation - an approach that closely aligns with VISHC’s mission of advancing impactful translational research with real-world relevance.
