Today is World Environment Day, with a global focus on climate action. 🌏

The climate crisis is also a health crisis, increasing the risk of heat‑related illness, respiratory disease, food and water insecurity, and the spread of infectious diseases.

Reducing these health risks depends on choices made today. Building climate‑resilient, low‑carbon health systems, strengthening early warning and disease surveillance, ensuring access to clean energy and safe water, and reducing emissions are essential to protect health and create a safer, healthier future for all.

Warm congratulations today to Samoa 🇼🇸 on the occasion of its Independence Day.

We’d also like to celebrate another important moment from the country’s early years as an independent nation. Shortly after gaining independence in 1962, Western Samoa joined the World Health Organization (WHO) as a Member State, with its admission approved at the Fifteenth World Health Assembly in Geneva in May that year.

More than six decades later, WHO is proud to continue this partnership, working alongside the Government and people of Samoa to strengthen health and well-being. Through our multi-country office in Apia, we look forward to continuing this collaboration.

Fa’afetai tele lava for the longstanding collaboration, Samoa.

Today is World ***co Day, where we draw global attention to the to***co epidemic and the preventable death and disease it causes. 🚭

This year, we focus on e-cigarette use. In many countries, va**ng among 13-15-year-olds has overtaken adult use, with rates continuing to rise.

To***co companies are targeting young people whose brains are vulnerable to ni****ne addiction. And va**ng can harm more than you think:
🧠 Ni****ne is highly addictive and impairs brain development in under-25s
☠️ V**e aerosols contains toxic substances
🫁 Va**ng increases risk of lung disorders
❤️ Va**ng increases risk of cardiovascular disease

Here’s how governments can protect youth: Ban flavours, marketing and designs that increase youth appeal.

Oral health is a key part of your overall health.

Across the Western Pacific, common oral diseases such as tooth decay, gum disease and oral cancer can affect people of all ages. Symptoms may include bleeding gums, bad breath, toothaches, loose teeth, difficulty swallowing, or sores or patches in the mouth that do not heal.

Brushing your teeth with fluoride toothpaste, eating a healthy diet, avoiding to***co and alcohol, and seeking care early when symptoms appear can help prevent oral diseases and protect your long-term health.
