Since completing my 100 swims challenge , I had lost my Mojo...a few personal things going on ..and the feeling I had nothing more to challenge me .But today the dogs and I went to Porthcothan in the strong winds and mizzle ,and I swam in a pool there and rediscovered my joy...
Swimming, especially in cold water , releases endorphins in your brain. These hormones make you feel good and help to increase positivity and bring about a sense of wellbeing and happiness research also suggests swimming helps reduce stress!!!

So things to look forward to for 2024
as well as offering coaching sessions to help you gain confidence into the water will be running a regular group for antenatal and post natal.mums
As an ex midwife and a qualified Aquanatal instructor sessions will help you stay healthy, fit and well during pregnancy, Swimming while pregnant is considered safe and is a great form of low -impact aerobic exercise if there are no contraindications
Post natally Swimming works all the muscles in your body and as a low-impact exercise that helps improve physical and mental health after giving birth. It can contribute to weight loss and toning your Swimming is a great form of exercise that works out all the muscles in your body and is a low-impact exercise it helps improve physical and mental health after giving birth andcan contribute to weight loss ,improving muscle tone and can help your mental health, as a form of stress relief and can help decrease the effects of post natal depression. .
All sessions will be carefully risk assessed

seal ecounters !
Today I met a friend in charlestown and went for a quick dip after at pp..Sammie seal kept popping up really close to me which was quite un nerving .He then swam under my legs and i accidentally kicked him( again !) and he came up right next to me looking quite shocked ...(could see the whites of his eyes ) ..i got out after that ...🦭
The Dorset Wildlife trust have this to say about seals
Seals are more likely to approach people in the water if the people are behaving in an interesting manner. For
example, if people are making sounds to each other and moving limbs or swimming without being focused on or
looking at the seals (as predators would). Seals will explore you with their fore flippers, whiskers and mouths. The
more you act like a seal, the more likely they are to approach you! Wearing a wetsuit means that the seals’ strong
claws and sharp interlocking teeth are less likely to accidentally break your skin. Please never touch seals no matter
how much they entice or provoke you to do so. Touching a seal may startle it, be uncomfortable on its fur and skin or
transmit infection.
Always watch the seals’ reactions closely - if they show signs of being agitated, please back away gently. They are
more likely to let you move away if you are behaving in a benign (and so boring) way. If they get intimidating, slowly
and gently but assertively move away. Pushing, nudging and vocalisations may be signs that the seal would prefer to
be left alone. Swatting their fore flipper towards you or crash-diving means ‘go away’ in seal language!

After a swim last night where one of the participants got a severe headache when she stepped into the water I have been trying to find out why...The above article for surfers offers a partial explanation, but my friend had not even immersed when she got her headache ...this lead me to explore other theories;
I considered the headache may be caused by the rise in blood pressure.when entering cold water.However research shows that this is countered by getting into the water slowly.Also ,research carried out on cold water swimmers demonstrated no significant rise in blood pressure (Huttunena 2000)
so could it be simply an" ice cream head'where the cold water causes your previously expanded blood vessels to contract and potentially spasm due to inhaling the cold air.Other names for this type of headache; cold-stimulus headache / trigeminal headache.Thought to be caused by rapid constriction of the blood vessels in the roof of the mouth (palate).The cure is by warming the roof of the mouth to prevent this rapid constriction by putting your tongue on the roof of your mouth.....(thankyou ASJ!)
