Most lawyers think promotion is about being brilliant.

It's not.

David Hardy made partner at 32.

And he learned something most lawyers never do.

Clients don't pay for legal knowledge.

They pay for solutions.

The lawyers who progress fastest aren't always the smartest.

They're the ones who build trust.

Build relationships.

And make clients' lives easier.

That's what moves careers forward.

Lawyers hate selling.

And honestly? That's not the problem.

The problem is thinking you have to.

Stop selling.

Stop pitching.

Stop convincing.

The best lawyers don't sell - they have conversations that walk a buyer through a buying decision.

Because being sold to isn't fun.

But being understood?

That's a whole different feeling.

Top US BD coach Steve Fretzin breaks down exactly how to do this.

"Let me think about it."

As soon as you hear that - nine out of ten times, this deal is not going through.

Because that is the ultimate blow off.

And there are lawyers chasing after business all the time that's never going to come back.

Because they didn't have a sophisticated yet simple process to follow.

No is the second best thing you can get to at the end of a meeting.

Moving someone to a yes.

Or moving someone to a no.

And knowing why.

You have a system for how we dry off after a shower.

But you don't have a system for how we grow our businesses.

Steve changes that.

You only get one shot at your law career.

Most lawyers are sleepwalking through it.

I spoke with Steve Fretzin - business development coach and host of the Be That Lawyer podcast.

In his 20s, he survived a plane crash.

Suddenly forever didn't feel so guaranteed.

So he stopped assuming he had time.

He built the career he actually wanted.

And then spent the next two decades teaching lawyers to do the same.

Because lawyers are running a thousand miles an hour.

Chasing cold leads.

Sitting on hot ones they can't even see.

Avoiding the word sales like it's going to kill them.

And lawyers are paying for it - with burnout, anxiety, depression.

Wondering how they got here.

You get one shot at your law career.

So do it right - and make yourself unstoppable.

There used to be a reason most lawyers never started their own firm.

It was too hard.
Too expensive.
Too risky.

That reason is gone.

I sat down with Dan Hobson, Head of Asia at legal tech giant Clio, and he described a world that would have been unthinkable ten years ago.

A law firm. Built overnight.

Practice management, billing, client systems - all in one platform.

Set up before your morning coffee.

The infrastructure that gave big firms their power?
Anyone can have it now.

This doesn't just change how law firms are built.
It changes who builds them.

And what happens to the ones that didn't move fast enough.

The billable hour has one fatal flaw.

It rewards time. Not results.

For decades that didn't matter — because time and effort looked the same.
AI just separated them.

I sat down with Dan Hobson, Head of Asia at legal tech giant Clio, and he said something every lawyer needs to sit with.

Clients outsourcing work don't want (for many tasks) to pay by the hour.

They want it done.
That's it.

And law firms are already responding in part.

Output-based models.
Value-based pricing.
Flat fees.

The profession is quietly dismantling the system it was built on.

But associates are still hitting 7, 8 chargeable hours minimum.

Partners are still managing to time targets.

The infrastructure hasn't caught up with the reality.

That gap is what determines the survivors.

Law firms have made serious money out of being inefficient.

That's not an accusation.
It's just the truth.

I sat down with Dan Hobson, Head of Asia at Clio - the man inside hundreds of law firms watching AI land in real time.

And he told me the thing that's keeping partners up at night.

Clients now know where the money's going.
They're asking for line items.

Questioning the hours.
Expecting it back faster.

AI is making the old model impossible to defend.

The question every firm is now asking isn't "how do we grow?"

It's "how are we still relevant in 5 years time?"

Dan provides the answers.

This law firm punished her for having a faith.

There was a boat party.

Jasmine Chaudry (now Partner at Waterstone Legal) - declined.

It was Ramadan.

She was called into a meeting.

"This isn't a good look."

Not the work.
Not the clients.
Not the billables.
Her faith.

She told them Ramadan comes first.

They asked if she wanted time to reconsider.

She didn't.

And in that moment, she realised something.

She couldn't stomach being in a place like this.

Some cultures don't exclude you loudly.

They do it quietly.

In a meeting room.

With a smile.

And they call it "feedback."

“Do you have any plans on having kids anytime soon?”

This is exactly what was asked of Jasmine Chaudry (now Partner at Waterstone Legal), when interviewing at a law firm earlier in her career.

At the time, Jasmine felt it was harmless.

A joke. Something to laugh off.

But later, Jasmine realises the real meaning.

And that it really was not okay.

It wasn't a curiosity.

It was a filter.

A way to decide who was “worth” investing in and who might become a risk.

Because in their eyes, maternity leave meant a lack of commitment.

This episode exposes the questions that aren’t supposed to be asked but still are.

And the mindset behind them.

She was asked in a job interview if she planned to have children.

Then told that a summer boat party should take priority over Ramadan.

She was told: “you don't fit the mould - you're out”.

This is the side of corporate law most people are too scared to talk about.

Jasmine Chaudy is now a partner at Waterstone Legal.

Law firms talk about diversity.

But at the senior levels?

We're not there yet.

Because the game was never designed for everyone to win.
