🌞 What’s your favorite way to get that Vitamin D??? Technically not a vitamin, Vitamin D is rare in standard human diets. Oily fish and some mushrooms is a great option, but exposure to good ol’ warm sunshine (not too much) is our favorite option. ☀️ Vitamin D deficiency affects more than 1 BILLION people. It helps prevent and treat a range of conditions including asthma, heart failure, autoimmune diseases and more. Sn**ch some rays today! 🌞

Did you know? Not getting enough water can cause fatigue, poor memory, dizziness, constipation, and even mood shifts. The good news - water can have immediate benefits: “That charge increases the cells’ functional efficiency, leading to better energy, clearer thinking, and less brain fog,”

Other Benefits

My take home points from the study:
➖No rice cereal or rice puffs. (My baby used to eat this all the time! 😬)
➖Limit apple juice and fruit juices - stick to orange juice, and better yet, filtered water if possible. (We have a Berkey filter - https://www.berkeyfilters.com/ )
➖Homemade baby food (especially for sweet potatoes and carrots) or cold-pressed baby food https://onceuponafarmorganics.com ) are better. As the study notes: “peaches and green beans from the baby food aisle are less likely to contain detectable levels of lead than canned versions of these foods, while carrot and sweet potato baby foods have higher lead detection rates than their peeled, fresh counterparts”
➖No more boxed Macaroni and Cheese - contain Phthalate plasticizers (my toddler loves this stuff too! 🤦🏽‍♀️)
➖Organic is best. The study notes: “a wide range of breakfast cereals, grains and beans are contaminated with the pesticide glyphosate (Roundup).” Glyphosate has been used in conventional farming and has been linked to cancer and is a neurotoxin.

Finally... we are all doing our best and learning as we go! Don’t beat yourself up. The past is the past. Knowledge is power. Learn from things and move on. And last but not least, the occasional junk food, candy, etc is ok! As long as the majority of the nutrition is coming from healthy and clean sources.

Heavy metals in many baby foods?! As parents we could drive ourselves crazy trying to figure out all the potential toxins our little ones are exposed to... pollution, pesticides, parabens, etc etc. Avoiding all toxins all the time is nearly impossible in today’s world. For the most part, babies are pretty resilient. But the more we can minimize toxins, the better.
Recently there was a study/national investigation by Healthy Babies Bright Futures, which found 95 percent of baby foods tested contain toxic chemicals that lower babies’ IQ - including arsenic, lead, cadmium, and mercury.😱 Even the organic brands contained these heavy metals. As the study notes: “Heavy metals are naturally occurring in soil and water and are found at elevated levels in fields polluted by pesticides, contaminated fertilizer, airborne contaminants and industrial operations. Food crops uptake these metals naturally. Leafy greens and root crops like carrots and sweet potatoes retain more than most other types of fruits and vegetables. How the food is processed may also affect the levels. Organic standards do not address these contaminants, and foods beyond the baby food aisle are equally affected.”
Though they state in the article that making homemade purées doesn’t take care of the problem, they do note that the way the foods are processed may contribute. By making my own organic baby food, I feel it is one small thing I can control, which makes me feel better about what I’m feeding my baby.

Want to live to be 100? It’s not all about kale and blueberries. Dan Buettner (Nat Geo Fellow) studied centenarians and found that in addition to diet, those who live longest are more likely to be very physically active, are part of communities - often religious ones - and are committed to their families. 💪🏽
