Another weekend …

… another half marathon!

What an absolute privilege it was to run the Oysho Royal Parks Half yesterday - a beautiful course on a beautiful day surrounded by other runners, the best type of people 🙌 🏃‍♂️ 💪

I was delighted to come in with another course record but most importantly, the satisfaction of running in one of my favourite places!

🥇MEDAL MONDAY 🥇

Congratulations to Rob Hudson who completed his first half marathon in two years at the Graham Water Half Marathon yesterday!

When I started coaching Rob back in January this year, he wanted structure and accountability, but most importantly he wanted me to help him to enjoy running again and, working together I think we have achieved just that!

He’s worked so hard on his training plan and has focused not just on the activity, but other key elements such as getting his nutrition right - having lost almost 10kg since he started his journey, this has no doubt made a huge difference to his running 🏃‍♂️

Well done Rob, I’m really proud of you & can’t wait to get you over the line at your next event, which should be a breeze, it’s only twice as far 🤣

Now then … What am I up to this weekend?

I get it.

You’re not always motivated to run.

Sometimes you’d rather do anything but, even though you know you that the juice is definitely worth the squeeze.

The problem with motivation is that it’s an emotion. It comes and goes, often influenced by things like your mood, the weather, how tired you are or simply what else you’ve got going on in your life.

Discipline, on the other hand, is what keeps you showing up when motivation doesn’t.

It’s about building habits, creating consistency and understanding that you don’t have to want to do something every single time, in order to benefit from doing it.

The ability to be able to do something, even in the absence of motivation, is an opportunity to develop your mental endurance.

“Discipline” isn’t about forcing yourself through every session, regardless of how you feel.

It might be accepting that the planned session today isn’t going to happen and making an adaption to it.

It might be starting the session and seeing how things feel before you decide it’s not going to happen today (let’s face it, you never know how the run is going to go until you actually start).

Because ultimately, it’s not about being perfect. It’s about making good decisions, consistently, over time.

Motivation might get you started, but it’s discipline that keeps you moving forwards.

And consistency in your approach is what leads, ultimately, to your success.

It’s not normal to feel knackered after every session …

I totally get the concept of “train hard and race easy” but honestly, not every session on your plan is an opportunity to “beast” yourself.

In fact. Would you believe me if I told you that when you do this, it’s counterproductive because you never give your body the opportunity to rest, recover and most importantly, adapt to the training stimulus you’re giving it.

If your training is structured correctly, the majority of the time you should be running comfortably and speed work should be planned, controlled and mindful, in line with the goals you are looking to achieve.

More isn’t always better.

Harder isn’t always better.

Feeling totally “spent” at the end of the session isn’t a measure as to how successful it was.

Starting to “dread” your sessions is the first indicator that you’re probably doing a bit too much.

Sometimes the best indication that you’ve had a “great” session is feeling like you could (and wanted to) carry on and waking up the next day NOT feeling like you’ve been hit by a bus.

🛎️ RING THE PB BELL 🛎️

Records aren’t always made at an event …

… and they’re not always planned, either!

Congratulations to our Amy Hopkinson who smashed out a brand new shiny 5k PR whilst she was supporting her hubby at Berlin Marathon - a great opportunity to try out a new Park Run 🙌

“I’ve lost my mojo”

I hear runners saying this all the time when in reality it’s so important to accept that even if you LOVE to run, there will be periods of time when it just doesn’t feel like “fun”.
.. and that’s ok!

Sadly motivation isn’t always there to be found and it’s close personal friend “enjoyment” seems to have done a runner too!

But that doesn’t mean that you have to give up.

It doesn’t mean that you have suddenly fallen out of love with the sport.

Sometimes it’s a case of mind over matter ie using your discipline rather than motivation to get you through those times.

Sometimes it’s about changing things up … perhaps adding something new to the plan, to keep you engaged and interested.

I know a few people who would swear that buying a new pair of running trainers tends to to the trick - if anyone tells you otherwise, disregard them, because you don’t need that kind of negativity in your life.

Do wherever you need to do - just because you’re not loving it now doesn’t mean you won’t reignite your passion.

Your mojo hasn’t gone anywhere … it’s just sat there, waiting in the wings, leaving you to find a way to put it back centre stage!
