Many times, people in church circles dismiss anxiety, depression, or emotional struggles by saying “it’s because you don’t know God.” But this is not true, and the Bible itself proves it.
From the book of Psalms, we see David himself crying out:
Psalm 42:11 – “Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God…” This shows even great men of God felt deep sorrow and inner turmoil.
Psalm 30:5 reminds us that “weeping may endure for the night, but joy comes in the morning.” That means God acknowledges that there will be nights of tears, struggles, and pain – but He promises hope.
Jesus Himself spoke to the weary and burdened in Matthew 11:28: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” Why would Jesus invite the weary, burdened, and heavy-hearted if such struggles didn’t exist?
And finally, 1 Peter 5:7 says: “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” The word “anxiety” is right there – the Bible names it, and God does not ignore it. Instead, He invites us to bring it to Him.
So mental illness, depression, and anxiety are not signs that someone doesn’t know God. They are real battles, even mentioned in Scripture. The danger comes when the church "Brushes off" instead of "Supporting them". That’s when many turn to alcohol, drugs, or destructive lifestyles looking for relief they should be finding in God’s people.
The church’s role should not be to condemn but to teach truth, show compassion, and offer support – just like Christ did.
