DF Nutrition Personalised nutrition coaching and solutions

14/06/2022

This lovely client asked me to help her with her relationship with food, as well as weight loss.

Together, we worked on her mindset and knowledge. This is often really challenging for people, we can be undoing years of beliefs, misconceptions and unhelpful habits. Without working on this element, the other changes just won’t be sustained.

We used this clients current diet and lifestyle as a baseline, making tweaks to elevate the nutrition and to achieve the series of goals that we set over time.

Using coaching techniques, I helped prepare this client to navigate her very enjoyable and busy social life so that she could still enjoy tasty food and drinks, whilst at maintenance kcals or a deficit 😊 A bit of support until different habits kick in goes a long way!

It’s such a pleasure to help people experience how good a nutritious diet can help them feel ☀️ Energised and living life to the full! ☀️

🎄🎄 Festive Eating 🎄🎄

How many of you have already used the phrase ‘Go on, it’s Christmas’!? 🎄🍷🍫😉 Quite bloody right!

This is my heart felt plea to not beat yourself up for enjoying festive eating, and my top tips for not feeling like crap in January:

🎅🏼 Look for opportunities to balance out the energy you’re consuming.
For example, if you know you’re having a high calorie dinner, consume less during the day. Or, if you’re having a high calorie day (or 5 🥳) purposefully have some lower calorie days where you can.

🎅🏼 Try to get some fruit/veg and water/diluting juice in where you can. You’ll feel better physically and enjoy the goodies even more.

🎅🏼 Get some movement into your day/week. It doesn’t need to be intense exercise, especially if you generally train hard, a break will do you good. And it doesn’t need to be a super long walk with an insta worthy view and outfit. Just get as many steps in as you can. Even if this means walking the 15 minutes to the supermarket instead of driving. Again, it’s looking for opportunities to balance things out a bit.

🎅🏼 Cut yourself some slack.
Thoughts and behaviours based on guilt and shame - i.e. - “I was really bad in December, I need to be good in January” - ultimately back fire and lead to further issues (physically and mentally).
Oppositely, self-compassion is more effective at improving health behaviours.

🎅🏼 If you do put on a couple of pounds - so be it. You might just find yourself in your happy weight place, or you might know in yourself that a couple of pounds on in December means a bit of a fat loss process in the New Year when you’re ready.

You are an adult and you’re allowed to eat foods that you enjoy 🧡

Merry Christmas! 🎄🎅🏼

Our toddler is poorly, and since he has no concept of infection control - he has lovingly shared his germs. And I really do mean lovingly - he picks his nose and sticks his finger in our mouths because he genuinely thinks it’ll make us happy 🤦🏻‍♀️🤢

Anywaaaay, you can’t beat a heartwarming bowl of veggie and lentil soup when you’re body and mind are run down. 🍜

Normally, I use whatever veggies need used up for soup or sauces, but I had nothing spare to use today. And because I’m running low on time and energy, I jumped into Tesco and bought a pre-prepared bag of veg soup mix (no guilt here, sorry). I shoved it in the pot with some red lentils and seasoning, and it will be served with some crusty bread and full fat lurpak. 🥖🧈
Our nutritional needs will be met and our hearts will be warmed - result! 🧡

I’ll digress and talk about the butter. Lets get one thing straight - life’s too short not to spread delicious butter on lovely bread, or put it on vegetables with some salt to make them nice and palatable. 🥦🥕🌽
Also, just as importantly - fat is essential for your immune system and hormones. You need fat in your body and life!

There are loads of ways to get mostly good fats into your diet rather than the massively processed stuff (which is fine occasionally btw).
All types of fat are high in calories in comparison with other nutrients, but you can look at your consumption of fat over the week rather than just one meal, or even one day to allow for the calories and prevent going into an energy surplus.
In other words - it’s completely possible to have a healthy, balanced diet that makes you feel satisfied and happy. 🧡

Go on, have the butter!

What diets will result in fat loss?

Low carb? Low fat? Intermittent fasting? Counting calories? Tracking macros?

Answer: They all will!

IF and this is a big IF - Only if they put you in a energy (calorie) deficit. Consume less calories than you use. Simple.

Actually, no, it’s not simple.

The key to success with any diet is adherence. And this is multi-faceted and unique to each of us humans. Because newflash - we’re not carbon-copied robots 🙊

What contributes to your food and drink choices? What contributes to your abilities to maintain those choices over time?

We all have preferences and lifestyles that have an impact on our needs, desires and choices. And even these things can vary day to day and week to week.

We all have different levels of understanding of nutrition and energy balance. We all have past experiences and different relationships with food. These factors can be complex.

So, although on one hand, the principle of fat loss is simple, achieving it - and especially maintaining it, can be a challenge for some.

If you feel you would benefit from some support with any or all of the above, get in touch. I have a few openings left for new clients.

Debbie 😊

* What I do and how I do it *

I work within a firm and ethical scope of practice at DF Nutrition. I typically support clients with:

• health optimisation
• weight/fat loss
• weight gain
• sports performance

I can also support people with particular clinical needs such as diabetes, PCOS, cardiovascular disease and gut health.

My service is based on teamwork with clients. Comprehensive information is gathered prior to consultation, to allow us to develop personalised, tailored solutions - unique to you!

As crazy as it sounds, my goal is for clients to not need me! As well as providing advice and a nutrition plan, I help clients to understand their own needs and solutions so that they are enabled and empowered to move forward with sustainable lifestyles habits and choices.

What I don’t do - unsustainable, general plans that don’t take individual preferences and lifestyle into account!

If you’d like to chat about how I could help you, feel free to drop a DM 💪🏻
