TONIGHT'S BLOOD MOON 🔴

A lunar eclipse 🌕 is taking place later tonight. It will reach its peak at 4:11am GMT and will be visible in North and South America as well as parts of Europe and Africa. This total lunar eclipse is linked to the partial solar eclipse that occurred on 30 April. It's commonly referred to as a blood moon due to the dark reddish hue that the moon takes on as it falls into the Earth's shadow. This nickname feels particularly apt as the Moon is currently in the Mars-ruled sign of Scorpio.

We talked about how this eclipse season kickstarted a new 1.5 year cycle of eclipses along the Aries/Libra axis (look up our earlier post from 30 April for context). However, tonight's Moon is in fact right at the cusp, at 0˚ of Scorpio, so it beckons us to also address the themes of the former eclipse cycle which took place along the Ta**us/Scorpio axis. This eclipse is set to be a period of beginnings and endings, and prompts us to reflect on any outstanding issues that might need addressing. Now would be a good time to think about completing that project or course, or bringing clarity to a relationship (although, that being said, try to hold off making any concrete decisions on the day of the eclipse itself, as eclipses can be confusing and turbulent) 🌊

By finding closure between now and next six months, we can move forward, sans heavy baggage, into the next thematic cycle of life ♾

AMPLIFIED AUSPICIOUS ABUNDANCE

Today is Akshaya Tritiya, and there are many customs and rituals associated with this day across various states in India.

We’re most interested in the underlying rhythms behind these traditions, and how we can honour and harness the energies of the day in a way that resonates with us, while paying homage to and respectfully taking guidance from the wise ones, the wisdom keepers of ancient indigenous cultures.

Astrologically speaking, today is the most auspicious day of the year, because both the great luminaries, ☀️Surya (Sun) and 🌙 Chandra (Moon), are in their position of exaltation, thus said to be shining brightest; Sun is in 🐏 Aries, and Moon is in 🐂 Ta**us. The great yet gentle spiritual Guru, Jupiter, is also at home in Pisces, the sign of Moksha, along with Venus exalted in 🎏 Pisces. This day is also free from the malefic synchronicities of transiting planets.

In general, the following practices are powerful and beneficial for everyone when performed on this day:

📿Japa - mantra chanting - especially Savitur Gayatri Mantra, 108 times

🔥Yagya - fire ceremony - you can create your own ritual and burn away the old and set new intentions

🏺Tarpan - ceremonial honouring of one’s ancestors

🙏🏽 Daan / Sewa - charity/selfless service

🪔 General good practices such as gratitude, reflection, forgiveness, setting intentions, planting seeds both literally and figuratively, and anything new started on this day may be amplified with auspiciousness and abundance

🙋🏾‍♀️ We'd love to hear what you do today, however big or small, to connect with this special energy.

THE CYCLICAL NATURE OF ECLIPSES

Yup, you’ve heard the news - it's eclipse season again. We are passionate about cycles, so it feels apt to dedicate a post to the eclipse that's happening as we speak. Eclipses happen roughly once every six months and they most often come in pairs. So in this particular season, we will witness a total lunar eclipse two weeks after today's partial solar eclipse.

In Jyotish or Vedic astrology, which uses the sidereal zodiac, this solar eclipse marks the beginning of a new series of eclipses along the Aries-Libra axis. It is generally not recommended to go out of your way and start something new during this period. The energy of an eclipse is powerful and unpredictable, and so things may not go quite according to plan. Instead, take a deep breath and reflect on or observe any changes in your life during this time. A series of eclipses takes about 18 months to move through a pair of opposing zodiac signs, so our advice would be to have a journal to hand and to take note of any significant events that may happen between now and the next two weeks, as you may find a reoccurrence of the same theme in the succeeding eclipse seasons that take place in their six-month intervals over the next 18 months.

For a deeper dive into thematic patterns linked to a particular series of eclipses, we can look to the saros cycle. Think back to any significant events that occurred 18 or even 9 years ago and observe whether any familiar themes play out again during this period. Not every eclipse series will be equally significant as much of that depends on the houses of your chart that they fall in, but you should nevertheless be able to witness a cyclical pattern. This is because roughly every 18 years, the Sun, Moon return to approximately the same relative geometry and a nearly identical eclipse will occur.

RANGWALI HOLI

The more famous part of the Holi festivities take place the following day, on the full moon itself, aptly named Rangwali Holi. The whole day is dedicated to celebrating love, life, joy, the arrival of Spring, and the victory of good over evil, with dancing in the streets, playfully applying colour to everyone around. The cheerful spirit is contagious, overflowing onto every street, and into our hearts, bringing our inner child out to play.

It is customary to drink Thandai, a delicious preparation made from cool creamy sweetened milk, with a mixture of almonds, cashews, pistachios, fennel seeds, watermelon kernels, rose petals, pepper, poppy seeds, cardamom, topped with saffron. For this special occasion, it is often made with Bhang (ma*****na leaves). It is D-E-L-I-C-I-O-U-S and perfect for cooling down in the heat.

We recommend coming to India to enjoy the Holi celebrations – it’s a truly unique and euphoric experience. Today happens to be International Day of Happiness, so let’s continue the spirit of Holi for a little bit longer!

NEW BEGINNINGS

The vibrant festival of Holi takes place on the last full moon of the year, in the month of Phālguna, according to the Vedic Lunar calendar, and marks the end of winter and welcomes in Spring. This year it took place yesterday (18th March) and it happens to be very close to the date of Spring Equinox (21st March) on the Solar Gregorian calendar that’s more commonly used all over the world.

The festivities start the evening before, celebrating the legend of Holika Dahan, with a ritual fire to burn away all that no longer serves us, and honouring the triumph of good over evil.

TAMARA JAL

When I was a little girl staying at my Nanima’s (Grandma’s) house, I was always fascinated by her subtle but consistent, seemingly mundane yet sacred practices. I was especially curious about her copper pot ritual. I admired the pot itself; its gracefully curved shape, its striking colour, its lustrous shine, hammered by hand to perfection. It was an everyday object to her, yet to me, it was a source of beauty and wonder.

Every night she would boil some water and fill the pot with it, and every morning she would drink that water from the pot. She still does this, at the ripe old age of 99.

As I got older, I got curious as to why she does this. To me, that simple unassuming little pot held so much more than water; it posed a question; it told a story; it revealed a message from my ancestral land, which I would later discover was rooted in the Vedic Science of Ayurveda.

Drinking one cup of water contained in a copper pot for eight hours (tamara jal) first thing in the morning, has many benefits, including stimulating healthy bowel movements and setting the metabolism for the rest of the day – and the importance of having good digestion is emphasised in Ayurveda. Just one cup in the morning is enough. Too much is not recommended.

THE GRANDMOTHER HYPOTHESIS

Did you know that there are only a few species of animals whose females continue to live long lives once they stop having the capacity to reproduce? They include humans and orcas (killer whales) - most other species die shortly after fertility cessation. The most prevalent scientific theory behind this phenomenon known as menopause, is that the elder females stop reproducing so they can help the children and grandchildren of the next generations survive and thrive – aptly named the grandmother hypothesis.

Across many countries and cultures, we must only go back a generation or two to remember that Grandma’s wisdom was what kept the family and society healthy. Her common sense provided the foundation for preventative care: She got up early with the sun. She knew that the body needed good, wholesome, lovingly prepared, tasty food, good quality sleep, and exercise, and she knew exactly what soup or tea to brew when we got sick. These are some of the keystones of Ayurveda.

Grandma’s wisdom may seem out of touch with modern society, but modern society is out of touch with the Earth. We’re one of the only species on the planet to have the blessing of Grandma’s wisdom, and that’s worth remembering!

Pictured here is a local grandmother carrying a vessel to collect water from the well. In Vedic philosophy, Kumbh (water carrying vessel, symbol of zodiac sign Aquarius) signifies the womb, the ultimate sacred feminine container that holds the life force within - and the very egg we hatched from was already inside our mother’s womb when she was inside our grandmother’s womb!
