Can you really have your ideal dream birth in the midst of a pandemic? YES YOU CAN! Giving birth doesn’t have to be a game of dice where you hope the odds are on your favor. Empower yourself:

🌸 Take accountability of your own health. Do not depend solely on what the doctor says. Know your options and make sure that your healthcare provider will support your desires and philosophy of birth.

🌸 Take a Childbirth Education class outside of your hospital’s offering. They are basic and pretty much teach you how to birth in their hospital. Empower yourself with birth and body wisdom in a way that speaks to you and the experience you desire.

🌸 Having a “Birth Plan” is not enough! You need to equip yourself with how to speak with medical staff so that your voice can be heard and you can feel confident advocating for yourself.

🌸 Preparing your mind and body for birth should begin as early as possible - those 40 weeks are not in vain! Also don’t forget about your Birth Partner! Keep them part of your childbirth journey. Learn, study and prepare together. Make sure they’re prepared to fill their role!

Some of the complexities that goes into Black maternity is that not only does She have to figure out which health providers are available in her area, She must also be concerned about these providers being accepting of the color of her skin:

🤔 Is there anyone in the practice that She can turn to that looks like her and understands her if needed?

🤔 How much will She need to “code switch” in hopes of being heard and respected?

🤔 What type of bias does this Provider have and how will it influence the type of care She will receive?

🤔 Will She have the freedom to ask questions without being viewed as unintelligent because of the pigment of her skin?

🤔 Can She use her right to decline procedures without being viewed as a problematic, angry Black Woman and creating an unsafe scenario based on a Provider’s resentment?

This directly affects a Black Mother’s confidence in her body, ability to birth, advocating for her healthcare and asking important questions that she needs to understand. Black Mothers are facing barriers that often go unseen by society. This is why Black Maternity matters and why Black Maternity Health Week is so very important!
