What‘s the difference between fasted and fed state?

Fasted:
Is when we do not eat, for example over night. Fasting is the time in between meals. In a fasted state, the body fuels not directly from food we eat but from our fat storage. Fasting helps loosing weight, level blood glucose, increase insulin sensitivity and detox the body. Evolutionary, it is a natural state humans have been in. It is natural that ketons rise in this phase, as they are the energy bodies. This is natural for everyone (also diabetics!). It is not harmful. What happens in fasting is:

⬇️ blood glucose decreases
⬇️ insulin needs decreases
⬆️ keton bodies rises
⬆️ fat storage rises

Fed:
Is the opposite of fasting, so the time we do eat. The body is digesting and absorbing and flies the body with glucose (not ketons). The issue for many is, that we eat all the time and spend too much time in fed state. It is healthy to give the body a break to regenerate with food e.g. with intermittent fasting. Which means:

⬆️ blood glucose rises
⬆️ insulin needs rises
⬇️ keton bodies decrease
⬇️ fat storage rises

Intermittent fasting is becoming a trendy topic for health optimisation. In the most recent podcast episode I interviewed two researchers, Alice and Petra, who wanted to know which evidence currently exist for the benefits of intermittent fasting. Together, they wrote a literature review.

Those studies and reviews are very important as they build the foundation for new health recommendations and guidelines in the future.

We discuss their findings and what it means for diabetics and anyone interested in health optimisation. Let’s hear why and for which claims we currently do not have solid evidence.

Unfortunately, there is no evidence just yet for intermittent fasting in people with type 1 diabetes, purely because of the clinical worry of inducing hypoglycemia and ketoacedosis. Those are worries and they have not been confirmed by science.

My personal experience with fasting is, that both hypoglcemia events and the risk of ketoacedosis are massively decreased. Yet, to achieve a successful fast for diabetics multiple skills are required such changing background insulin by oneself easily and quickly.

Have a listen to the episode and be the first one to know about potential health recommendations coming up for weight loss and diabetes management.

I’m so happy to have received a scholarship from to be a patient advocate at the European Association for the Study of Diabetes conference 2021.

It will give me the chance to share with you the most recent research and findings in the field of diabetes. I will join scientists, researchers, doctors, nurses and other health care professionals from over 100 countries at this massiv one week conference.

I love being a patient advocate. Advocacy itself is great, no matter in which field, because you can be involved, make a difference and pay it forward to your community.

Here are 3 REASONS for why I think patient advocacy is great:

1️⃣ You can be the voice
This is one of the most critical benefits, cause it is not just about what authorities and experts tell us but for them to hear about our experiences and needs. From the bottom up.

2️⃣ Transition of knowledge
Getting the knowledge from experts and sharing it with the community
—> I will share in my podcast 🎧 🎧🎧

3️⃣ Asking the right questions
Bringing new ideas for care, research, products and services to those who can realise them.

If you want to become an a patient advocate in the field of diabetes, check out the program

So useful, when you want to add some sweetness to your life!😍

Save post for later!

Monkfruit is by far my most favourite sweetener because:

🌱 it’s a natural plant
🍧 better to digest than erythritol
2️⃣ two times as sweet as regular sugar - so you need much less

I recommend to try monk fruit for anyone who gets digestive issues with chemical sweetness. For that stevia is great too, but it has an aftertaste and, as the graph shows, it does not have the same sweetness profile.

I need no insulin for any of the sweetness mentioned in the graph (obviously just for sugar). They are all great, when it comes to gaining or mentioning insulin sensitivity💡

Which sweetener do you use?

I did it. Just because. 💇🏽‍♀️

There was a time in my life, when it did not grow well and I lost a lot of hair.

Today, I have much hair, it looks and feels healthy and it grows fast and long. It is strong.

🚫We often get told a lie:
Apparently we can have beautiful hair with just the right -chemical- products and much care.

✅ Truth is:
Most has to do with the food you eat and your hormone balance.

I use no chemical products and only brush my hair occasionally. That’s literally the only outside care I give 😅 The magic happens inside not outside. When you give your body what it needs, it flourishes 🌱🌸

And what changed with my hair, changed with my nails too. They are strong, grow well and do not break.💅

I share this story a lot in my nutritional consultations and hear many other peoples stories. For really most people, weak hair growth is nothing they are born with and therefore something which they can improve through diet!

A day out, is no excuse for me to not stick to keto😉

I went hiking last weekend and thought it might be useful to share which keto foods and snacks I take with me.

Here is what I took along (this is NO funded add).

🍜 home made zucchini noodles for lunch 🍜
🍫 fatt bar apple cinnamon for a snack 🍫
🍪 vanilla cookie for a treat 🍪
🧃 juice box for low blood sugar 🧃

Currently the apple cinnamon bar .fatt is my favourite snack from for even a short trip around London.

Which low carb foods do you take to work or a day out?

Being happy and smile does not mean it is easy. Living with a chronically illness is hard and challenges me every day.

For me, it is about being true to myself about my emotions, to keep going and to choose happiness daily as my theme.

Generally, I look at the bright side of life…

…cause chronic illnesses suck and always will😅

Who agrees?

What do the paleo, keto, gluten free, low carb, sugar free, dairy free lifestyles have in common?

They all have a more natural approach to food and what humans ate before permanent settlement and agriculture. They all criticise the standard western diet.

I came across two British entrepreneurs, who used the words Hunter and Gather in their brand name and I was intrigued to interview them for the podcast.

The outcome is a fascinating talk with the founders Amy and Jeff who make products free from refined sugars, grains and inflammatory oils - such as seed or vegetable oils.

Eating real food free from grains, refined sugars & seed oils has been revolutionary for Amy's & Jeff health. Especially for Amy, who is a life long  coeliac. In this episode they not just share their story but also help us identify high quality oils as consumers to pursuit optimal health.

Which diet are you following? Comment 👇🏽
💚 keto
💛 paleo
🧡 lowcarb
❤️ none of those

Struggling to find keto products in your local store?

Saw this and though I’d share with you 😍 Some inspiration on keto products you can find at Costco. Will share more content on products from different supermarkets like Aldi soon.

What keto product are you getting from the supermarket?

With the weekend ahead this is good to know! Save it for later!

Since I am on keto I stopped having cocktails when going out. Making them low carb at home is a different story but the amount of sugar in “normal” cocktails is more often than not insane😱

Which alcoholic* drink is your favourite? Let me know in the comments👇🏽

*just so none comments “water” - I hope, we all like that one the most😂

If you understand that, then you are highly appreciated 😂

Still, when most people I meet hear the word “diabetes” react with something along the lines of:

😳“Have you tried cutting sweets?”
😒“But you are not overweight.”
🤯“But you look healthy!”
😠“You seem fine to me.”

Type 1 diabetes is fundamentally different to type 2 diabetes and NOT diet related. Just because the illnesses is treated similarly, or carries a similar name, does not make it the same!

Unfortunately, type 1 diabetes seems quite random. There is no known cause and no cure.💡

Sometimes I don’t know if it is a blessing or a curse that the general public is well educated about “diabetes” without clarification of the type of diabetes 🙇🏽‍♀️ Of course, besides prejudice towards other forms of diabetes, I know it is a good thing😅 👏🏽

What have people told you, when you said you have type 1 diabetes?
