The gold standard of care: A multidisciplinary approach💫

One of our main drivers behind the SOS clinic is our strong belief in the power of a Multidisciplinary approach. The way we see it, it’s a win win for the patient and the health care professionals. The patient receives care in a time effective way with all team members involved ensuring a clear treatment pathway ahead. And the Health professionals involved are able to gain insights and learn from each other as apart of the co- consulting process.

This pic captures our Colorectal surgeon Dr Penny De Laca Valerie and Titled Pelvic Health and Continence Physio Lyz Evans at the end of this mornings clinic discussing the cases and mapping out the treatment plan for each individual.

It’s amazing what can happen when we all work together. ☺️

Anorectal manometry results discussion with Dr Penny. 📊📈📉

As apart of our consultation anorectal manometry is performed to get a more objective insight into how well the internal and external a**l sphincter are functioning. This test provides a range of different numbers that help us to educate our patients as to how the anorectal complex is performing compared to ‘normal’.

We always take the time to then explain the results to women in detail, helping them to understand their own body better. A summary of results are then sent to the referrer to include them as apart of the management pathway.

This is Dr Penny doing just that last week. ☺️

Listen, Assess, Educate, and Listen more. 👂

Every women that walks through our clinic doors has a story to tell. Her story is important, her symptoms are important but what's more important is her understanding of her own situation.

Rarely has a thorough assessment of a woman's colorectal symptoms occurred following the birth of a baby, mainly due to lack of training or awareness and difficulty in accessing the required equipment to be truly diagnostic.

At SOS we intently listen, we assess in great detail, we discuss and we educate.

We know how important it is that every woman gains a greater understanding of her colorectal symptoms and make it our priority to ensure every one of our patients feels she understands her anatomy, prognosis and management options in great detail.

WHY AN INTERDISCIPLINARY APPROACH?

Developing the SOS interdisciplinary clinic has been a while in the making. Conceived from a shared desire to provide a better model of care for women.

Discussions were had and ideas were shared between a team of dedicated health professionals
, to bring to life the SOS clinic. This has been an incredible learning experience for all disciplines learning from each other along the way, highlighting the benefits of the interdisciplinary team.

At SOS our mission is to providing a specialised service for the diagnosis, care and management of women who have had an obstetric a**l sphincter injury, are at risk of sustaining an obstetric a**l sphincter injury or who are suffering from anorectal symptoms following childbirth.
In order to provide this we recognise that the management of birth injuries truly requires a dedicated interdisciplinary approach.

By offering a combined consultation with input from our Colorectal surgeon Penny De Lacavalerie and physiotherapists Mel Chapman and Lyz Evans we strive to achieve a comprehensive diagnosis and multidisciplinary care plan and the best outcome for our patients.

The result of this collaboration is a report and plan provided to the patient as well as the referring doctor, physiotherapist, midwife or obstetrician so that care can continue within patients current care team with a full understanding of all the factors contributing to a patient’s birth injury and anorectal symptoms to ensure best patient outcomes.
