📢 We MUST continue advocating for our experience to change. Maternity leave improves long-term maternal health. 📢Nearly all developed countries throughout the world have a national policy that provides new parents with paid time off to care for and bond with their children. The United States is not one of them. In fact, the U.S. is the only country classified by the World Bank as high-income that does not have paid maternity leave.

The daughter of former slaves, Mary Jane McLeod Bethune became one of the most important black educators, civil and women’s rights leaders, and government officials of the twentieth century. The college she founded set educational standards for today’s black colleges, and her role as an advisor to President Franklin Delano Roosevelt gave African Americans an advocate in government.

Today I wanted to pay tribute to one of the first African American women to be board-certified as an obstetrician-gynecologist. She gained admission to the International College of Surgeons and worked passionately to advocate for better health care to whoever needed it, regardless of what they could afford.

Prior to that, I was the one always performing the deliveries for my patients.
