There are 3 pillars of Functional Nutrition.

#2 INDIVIDUALITY

Nutrition is not, and should not be, one size fits all. We’re different and so are our nutritional needs, preferences and compatibilities. What is ‘good’ for one person may not be ‘good’ for another. Anyone who tells you differently is either lying to you to sell you a program that is too broadly prescriptive, or doesn’t know what they’re talking about.
Your ‘optimal’ when it comes to nutrition is as unique as your finger print.

There are 3 pillars of Functional Nutrition.

#1 SUSTAINABILITY
Short term, highly restrictive diets that take a lot of will power and have an end date will more than likely leave you back where you started, eventually. Detoxes included.
Learning to eat functionally, in a balanced, healthy, whole way is sustainable. It leaves you better off than where you started and with the tools to never be back where you started ever again. It’s yo-yo free. It’s for life.

This one’s for those who lift 💪🏼

You may or may not have heard of creatine before. You may or may not think it’s good for you.

Creatine is a derivative molecule of amazing little energy pockets in muscles called Phosphocreatine. Phosphocreatine is the reason any of us can perform powerful, short duration movements like snapping your fingers or deadlifting a barbell. At any one time, a 70kg male has approximately 120g of creatine in his muscles, naturally.
Creatine monohydrate is the supplement that most athletes take to keep their stores of creatine in the muscle up.
Why should you take creatine?
-Optimal repeated high power output (more effective weight training), resulting in more effective strength gains.
-Optimal muscle hypertrophy, if combined with adequate training.
-Preventative of muscle mass and strength loss that comes with ageing.
-Plays a role in maintaining brain function.

When should you take creatine?
-After training, with 50g carbohydrates.

Who should take creatine?
-Anyone serious about training.

Creatine is *the safest* researched supplement. Over 1000 scientific studies have been performed on the safety of creatine monohydrate to conclude no dangerous side effects. It is inexpensive. It’s tasteless.

As with all supplements, without adequate focus on the quality of the rest of your diet, taking a supplement is like a plaster 🩹 on a gun shot wound 🔫

4 years, 11 kilos, but the same special friend.

A lot of fighting with food and then a lot of peace with it.
Restriction, bingeing, crying, feeling useless, helpless, doomed.
Learning, growing, feeling grace, having grace, changing focus.
Feeling confident, happy in my skin, healthy, free… feeling like me.

I know the struggle of feeling unhappy in my skin. Of feeling like I’m not in control.
Bulimic tendencies? Been there.
Crash diets? Been there.
Using exercise as punishment? Been there.
Avoiding social settings with food involved? Been there.
Feeling like a failure for being ‘healthy’/‘fussy’ about food but still not losing weight? Been there…

Now, I know what food freedom is. What it means to be healthy, and that the scale doesn’t measure that. To use food as fuel but also to enjoy it. To spend time and emotions on productive, meaningful things in my life, and to have the energy to do so.

To love my body, what it’s capable of and what it does for me.

If you’re struggling with some, or all, of these things- it’s important to know you’re not alone. To know that you’re moving forward, even when sometimes it doesn’t feel like it.

Keep going. You’ve got this 🌈

Part 3 of 3 of “What healthy nutrition looks like to me.”

Exercise is imperative.
Exercise changes the way we metabolise food, both on days we exercise and on days we don’t. It changes the way our bodies store energy. It changes appetite regulation. It changes the emotional environment of food. It changes sleep, which changes hormones, which changes our choices around food.

You cannot be healthy without exercise. Not even if your nutrition is completely optimal.

The type of exercise matters less. There are types of exercise that will bump you up the healthy scale, and have longer lasting healthful effects.. But some type of movement matters most.

Exercise is imperative.

Part 2 of 3 of “What Healthy nutrition looks like to me”

Self love ✨

Someone really wise once told me that if you look after your body, it’ll look after you too.

Self love looks like fuelling your system with what burns the fire brightest 🔥

It looks like knowing what works for you, and what might work for others, but doesn’t work for you 🤷🏼‍♀️

It looks like LOVING healthful food (because it tastes good but also) because you respect yourself enough to care for yourself, like no one else can 🦸🏻‍♂️

It looks like learning to work *with* your body and not against it.
To not constantly overburden it with amounts it can’t, and won’t, handle.
To not purposefully starve it, and still expect it to perform- to accomplish, day in and day out.

To accept it, love it, cherish it, use it, enjoy it and thrive in it. It’s perfect. In every way ✨
