With the shift of the seasons, the colder, drier weather is doing a number on our skin. The body relies on the moisture of our skin and facial orifices to provide a strong barrier against pathogens. This supports the immune system, also the protective barrier of the skin from breaking, it even extends to the gut lining. While the environment is drier, the body is powerfully resilient and able to maintain a healthy level of moisture as long as we support the blood and yin. Applying moisturizer is a way of doing this externally, and internally there are some helpful foods to nourish us through the cold and dry months.

Our emotions have a tremendous effect on our physical bodies. Based on how we are feeling or perceive our situations, our bodies respond accordingly, with or without any physical threat. Chinese Medicine places equal weight on prolonged emotional states as a cause of disease with infections or physical trauma. Meditation, breathwork, and mindfulness practices can all play a huge part of the healing process.

How do you manage your stress? As much as we want to believe that stress is just mental/emotional, it can disrupt the regular flow of Qi in our bodies and present physical symptoms. So what does that look like? One of the most common patterns is the way it disrupts our digestive system (For tcm nerds: the Liver system and Spleen are closely related).
Conditions such as IBS is just one clear example. Many times stress can trigger pain or urgency without other physiological abnormalities. Labs can be totally clear but a person can still have lots of symptoms. Even on a more subtle level, we can relate to a time when we were very nervous, maybe with public speaking or a performance and you feel your stomach in knots! You’re actually feeling the energetic stagnation that happens with those kinds of emotions!
I challenge you to pay attention to how your digestion changes next time you’re in a stressful situation. I notice it even when I’m driving. If I’ve just had a larger meal, and I’m on the road, I can feel that extra bit of tension, and notice that my digestion feels halted.
