Egon Yoga

Egon Yoga After years of training & competing in full contact martial arts, my body and mind were stiff and in need of healing.

Hi,

I am Egon and my quest for healing and self-enquiry started in 2009 with Zen meditation where it soon became clear that sitting for long periods of time was not as easy as it seemed. Yoga asana offered the solution to release physical, mental & emotional tension and to be able to commit to a more spiritual life. For the last 10 years I have dedicated myself full time to the path of yoga and

coaching. Combining Yoga, Meditation and Holistic Functional Training both as a practice and profession from Europe to Australia & Bali. In my classes I like to take students on a journey into themselves, because I firmly believe that the body and breath are vehicles for transformation. Moving through both creative and traditional sequences inspired by Mandala Vinyasa Krama Yoga while integrating embodied movement and mobility. I have been teaching Functional Anatomy, Asana Labs and Sequencing at Yoga Alliance Certified Yoga Teacher Trainings in Belgium since 2019 and like to integrate this knowledge in my classes to create a safe framework where the body can release tension and feel empowered.

When are we flexible enough? And what does it have to do with personal transformation?

What put me off of practicing ‘traditional’ ashtanga was the feeling some teachers gave me of never being enough.

“You have to do all the jump backs, you can’t skip a pose, you can’t add a pose, you have to do the whole sequence everyday, ….” and if you didn’t they started playing some passive aggressive games that really made me question the whole nature of this way of practicing and what being ‘authorized’ actually resembles in this tradition.

There seemed to be little to no interest on how this rigoureus practice makes you feel on personal level and the able bodies in the room seem to get all the praise for their fortunate body composition and athleticism. Is this Yoga than?

I am very grateful for what it has taught me in regards to self practice but its rigidity drove me to burn-outs, injuries and actually stood in between the gentleness my body needed in order to release deeply rooted trauma’s but to also have the time and energy to transform these issues.

If you beat yourself up everyday for the sake of being even more flexible than there is something that doesn’t really resonate with the goal of Yoga in my opinion. I have seen many people get injured and get stuck in a loop after many years of practice as a result of over-identifying with physical shapes and moving beyond the physical realm.

Yes the practice can quiet your mind and help you get in tune with your body. But so do other movement practices and even sports. So proclaiming that a certain method is the holy grail is simply ridiculous.

To me a sustainable yoga practice is about freeing yourself from the shackles of conditioned existence, to free yourself from energetical blockages and find the flow to live your dreams.

Peace has become something we have to fight for.

It is not given to humans any longer. And it seems like the pressure just keeps on rising.

Finding peace is an act of rebellion. To dive into that quiet space, inside, where nothing can touch you.

Reside there for a moment, if only just for now.

And use it to recharge you, from the wicked ways of this world..

True healing is when
you have faced your shadows, forgiven the past & yourself.

Accepted your flaws,
felt your power
and are able to look
deep into your heart
and know:

Now I am ready
to make some one else
happy too.

This pose and its variations healed me from a spondylolisthesis also known as a slipped disc.

I got this injury because a teacher had me doing drop backs way to soon without considering other structures in the body that needed attention in order to safely do the movements.

Most back injuries are caused by tightness in the hip flexors (more specific the re**us femoris and psoas muscles) and not by bending backwards or doing rotational movements.

When these tissues are tight they create an excess pull on the anterior iliac crest (pelvis) and lumbar vertebrae. As a result this will cause an anterior pelvic and hyperlordosis
causing compression in the sacrum and lumbar spine.

It is highly important to integrate poses into our practice that stretch this part of our bodies especially when we are sitting a lot.

Getting to know your body and practicing with a teacher who understands these principles is far more valuable and sustainable than simply following a protocol for the sake of a so-called tradition. ✌️
