Playing with label sizes for the flower essence bottles. Joint/muscle salve hanging out. I'm really excited to share these new creations with y'all. Somehow making stuff from plants has gotten me in more of an October mood than anything else so far-- makes sense though right? October is wine making month, pumpkin carving time. October is transmutation 🦇

From July 6-July 11, Follow the hashtag to see what black folks have BEEN and ARE UP TO in the fields of plant research! And keep following. Let's normalize bipoc folks doing what they love in a field that is expected to be homogeneously not. Check out my story in Tuesdays where I feature bipoc healers, Herbalists, ecologists, and artists who are working to educate and inspire.

Medicinal Mondays: Wild Artichoke (Cynara cardunculus)
Since the start of June, these members of the Thistle family have been blooming around my neighborhood. They are absolutely arresting to behold. They are completely edible and HIGHLY nutritious-- closely related to the Artichokes commonly found in stores. They are potent digestive herbs that work on the liver, kidneys, and gallbladder, stimulating and cooling the digestive system. Even great for canine IBS if you can afford that 😂 But the best way to get their nutritional value is honestly to cook em up and enjoy them 👌
Spiritually, I associate Wild Artichoke with The Devil and the Crown Chakra. The former was revealed in meditation with the plant itself. Artichoke will work with you if you are struggling to release negative or toxic habits that keep you in 'bo***ge' or low-vibrational states. For me, this has looked like an unhealthy relationship with social media over the past month. I will be working with the grounding, piercing, and reassuring spirit of this plant for sure.
Question: As you notice plants pop up around your place of living, what do you think they are trying to offer you? What does your body, mind, or spirit need more of in various seasons of your life?

Does your iced treat your nervous system with respect? Does it bring your stress flowers and tell it to chill by the pool cuz the dishes can wait? Sunday Recovery does that. Holy Basil-- the main ingredient in this caffeine-free tea-- has been shown to regulate Cortisol levels and promote a healthy stress response. Skullcap settles you in, Lemon Balm plays soft guitar, and Lemongrass is lighting candles. ✨Link in Bio✨
Sunday Recovery: Lemony, malty, Fruit Loop-y, with chai undertones. Herbalist-formulated with all Organic ingredients. Slaps iced or hot 🔥. Caution: serious unwinding may occur.

So my friend wrote AND hand-bound a book of poetry. I was beyond happy to simply HOLD this pure work of love. Beyond blessed by this addition to my library. This weekend's reading is going to be a TREAT 🙌🙌

Tuesday is ruled by Mars. The god of War is aggressive and straightforward, and reminds us that this battle is a slow burn, not a short sprint. So it's feeling like Tuesdays are gonna be dedicated to amplifying Black/Indigenous Herbalists/Healers/and Artists. I'm not 100 Percent sure what IG etiquette says about reposting other peoples content on your feed. So until then I'll mainly be using my Story to curate! Check it out 👁️🙌🌿
👉 While we are here though, some friends of mine who are SUCH incredible women and I highly recommend supporting if you are looking for empowering health consultations and energy healing:
- my great friend from herb school who offers quite powerful distance reiki. Her style is so heart-felt and absolutely healing. She's based in San Diego and works remotely and/or in-person. We also have a fun surprise coming in August so give her a follow and stay tuned 😁✨💚
- Currently based out of Michigan, an absolute force of an Herbalist who I have had the privilege of getting to know over the past few months. She is offering $10 consultations and is the queen of 'food as medicine' 🙌 highly recommend following if you wanna step up your nutrition game.

🌿
Ginger (Zingiber officinale) is THE herb of South East Asia ✊. It's its place of origin! Filipino Mussel Soup is a dish my mom cooked all the time when I was growing up. Apart from mussels being so well-rounded the in minerals our bodies require, this dish basically is one HUGE Ginger root decoction (decoction: simmering an herb, usually a root, in water for 20-30 min.) It's a long time, but it's one of the ways to EXTRACT the constituents of a medicinal root.
🌿
Ginger root has so many active constituents that make it antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, and very immune-boosting. (Has your Filipino grandma ever given you Salabat to drink when you were sick?? It's a ginger decoction with honey! 👌). Ginger is so versatile it even behaves differently in the body if it is eaten fresh or dried. Dried Ginger is actually MORE warming to the gut than fresh, and can quell nausea and indigestion very effectively.
👉Btw 'medicinal' is such a weirdly catchy, convenient, but inaccurate term. Herbs aren't Medicine! They have medicinal value, but do not operate the same way pharmaceuticals do. I will be de-capitalizing the 'm' in 'medicinal' for this purpose. Similarly, Herbalists are not Doctors 😺

Not an herby post whatsoever, but maybe a palette cleanser before I start to get a little more regular with the posts? I'm thinking about designating specific days of the week for certain categories (Herbal Medicinals, Filipino culture, plant ID, etc). If there's something you love learning about, or want to hear more about, let me know in the comments!

Herbs and how they were literally always there, decades before I knew I'd be doing what I do now:
🌿
When I was 5 or 6, I loved re-watching an episode from the original Pokemon series where a woman was grinding herbal medicine for Ash's Pokemon (can someone tell me I didn't hallucinate this??). I loved the sound of the mortar and pestle.
🌿
Flash forward to a famers market in high school, and I felt absolutely enthralled by an Herbal tea tent. Never before hearing of 'Raspberry leaf' let alone it's uses, I felt so compelled to purchase some (probably the first instance of my life where a plant chose to work with me.) I loved the taste, and that was about it at the time.
🌿
Flash forward to studying Cognitive Science at UCSD, when my menstrual cycles were averaging 60 days and I was googling and picking herbs on the way to class to make into period starting tea (totally clueless). I even went as far as to make a parsley leaf bolus, not knowing I wasnt super far off (Parsley family herbs go hard with women's issues)
🌿
Flash forward to 2019, where I successfully tapered off antipsychotic medication (prescribed for anxiety 👀) after a hospitalization, using Meditation and Valerian root.
🌿
July will be 1 year since I made the choice of releasing my career in UX and graphic design and going full-throttle into herbal medicine. At the time it felt random, but looking back it was decades in the making! Im excited to spend the rest of 2020 working through my courses and apprenticeship, with the goal of becoming a Clinical Herbalist and Holistic Mental Health professional.
Raspberry Leaf is an astringent herb that 'tones' the mucosal lining of the GI tract. I use it all the time now in my dog's herbal formula for diarrhea. It is better known for its affinity for the uterus, and is a popular women's herb to prepare for childbirth.
