The key to this practice is breath. Slowing the breath, slowing the movement (and panic), and allowing thoughts to float away. From there the medicine starts … the healing, empowerment, and spark from this posture all seep into your cells.

In this dark time of year, allow yourself to sit with discomfort and breathe through all of it. This will start the colourful foundation to where the seeds will be planted in the spring.
For now… feel, breath, rest. 🌬️

There are many celebrations coming up this month! It is a wonderful time to celebrate, and also to remember how important practicing gratitude is during this time. It not only helps to keep ourselves grounded and present, but it has the power to send a ripple effect around our communities.

I am so grateful for everyone who has been part of our Regrowth yoga practice over this past year! Your energy, strength, and spirit has created such a beautiful community. Thank you!🎄

In the week of December 18th, we will have our usual classes but instead of the normal drop in fee, it will be $10 + any amount of food for the food bank! Bring what you can and I will take it all to the food bank at the end of the week. Registration for these two classes is open now!

As we get closer to the winter solstice, start to think deeply about what you want to bring into fruition for the cycle that is ahead of us. It’s a time to plant seeds and see what blossoms in the spring.
I will be offering an intention setting workshop in the middle of January… a time that can feel daunting in the darkness with the year ahead. We will move, breathe, still our minds, and set meaningful intentions and goals for the year.

With breath in the body, your body will never be perfectly still. The point is not to find stillness in the body, but instead to find stillness in the mind.
Some people run, some dance… others ski or practice yoga asana. We move our bodies to help find the stillness in our minds. This way, not only are we better able to sit in meditation without discomfort, but we give ourselves opportunities to find deeper connection to our emotional selves.

Early mornings at Grace Space are dark and cozy in the winter. Starting off in a restorative pose, we slowly warm up our bodies and creep into the muscles that may still be asleep. Ten years ago, one of my teachers said … “When you stay in Tadasana for long enough, your body should become fatigued and you should have sweat dripping off the tip of your nose. If you don’t, you’re not doing it right!”
These words have stuck with me through the years in my own practice… though I haven’t yet found out how long it would take for the sweat to start dripping, I am spending more time in this shape to see where is takes me.

Tadasana is translated to mountain pose. This shape gives us the space to embody standing strong like a mountain. It is a grounding posture that serves to remind us of our connection to inner strength and stability. Things we all possess and often forget about.
Here we are asked to feel our feet pressing into the Earth as they holds us upright. We engage our thighs, pelvic floor, and abdominals… all to help maintain the curves of the spine against the pull of gravity. We have the space to connect to our breath and let it spark the energy inside of us. The energy that will guide us through a sequence of postures and help to bring clarity and relaxation to the mind.

In this shape, a storm could be shaking out around us, but we are solid as a mountain, calm as the breeze, just following our breath. 🌬️ 🏔️

Morning yoga at the start of the week always leaves me feeling energized, refreshed, and inspired. We have our Root to Rise Vinyasa Yoga class on Mondays from 6:30AM to 7:30AM at Grace Space Yoga Studio. This class starts off in a restorative pose, slowly wakes up the body, flows through invigorating movements, and ends with a moment for mindfulness.

In Portland we went to the Japanese Gardens and checked out the sand and stone gardens. We made many guesses on how they may have created such perfectly raked lines and how often they had to be redone.
Later I learned that the important principle underlying these gardens is yohaku-no-bi, meaning “the beauty of blank space”. This style of garden was not meant for meditation, but rather for contemplation. To sit and be with the blank space and allow yourself to savour all the senses. It is the space between where we often forget to stop and take time to appreciate the moment, especially if it feels less thrilling than others.

As the season changes and we cross over the Autumn Equinox, we are given the opportunity to feel gratitude for all that summer has brought us … while preparing for the changes that come with the passing of time.
In our yoga practice on Wednesday, we will acknowledge these changes through breath and movement. Letting go of what we don’t need and allowing space for change. 🍂🌿
