Create space to breathe. Join us for a virtual TIMBo offering to learn and practice tools to live with ease both in and out of a pandemic.

TIMBo combines simple yoga-like movements, relaxation breathing, guided meditation, and a workbook-based approach to explore and better understand the impact of emotions such as fear, guilt, shame, and grief.

Research has shown that upon completion of one full TIMBo program, participants’ symptoms of depression, anxiety, and trauma (PTSD) are significantly lower. Not only this, but women score significantly higher on a measure of self-compassion after participation in the program as compared to before.

This nine week session is co-led by licensed TIMBo facilitators Hannah Colbert and Lu Traina. We will meet virtually via zoom for 9 consecutive weeks, the first of which is an orientation/informational session, on Thursday evenings 5:30-7 p.m.

For more information, visit our website or email [email protected]

Join us for a free info session 1/28 to learn more!

TIMBo facilitates personal growth that will help participants navigate life’s tensions through:

• improved behavioral self-regulation through mindfulness

• a self-compassionate understanding of human survival responses

• social-emotional growth that promotes compassionate attunement to the self and to others

• strengthening the sense of self and promoting confidence in relationships

• developing a resilient worldview that enables participants to interact with life’s problems with composure and confidence

Total non-refundable cost of the program is $150, which includes the cost for the workbook.

If you already have a TIMBo workbook, cost of program is $125, please email [email protected] to sign up without the TIMBo workbook (if you already have one!)

Please email [email protected] with any questions about the TIMBo program, and visit www.timbocollective.org to learn more!

Please read this document before you sign up. You will be asked to sign a responsibility agreement before starting the program.

stress levels are sky high for many today and will be this week. the collective loss and uncertainty of 2020, anticipation of the election, previous or present trauma, and/or systematic oppression and more all collectively activate our stress responses.
without mindfulness or building body awareness, many of us can enter a state of chronic tension from extreme stress and not even notice how tense we are moment to moment, literally bracing ourselves for what is to come.
there are 2 steps to practice progressive muscle relaxation: first, systematically tense particular muscles in the body, such as your neck and shoulders. then, release the tension and notice how you feel when you relax them. by tensing and releasing, you learn not only what relaxation feels like, but also to recognize when you are starting to get tense or tight in the body.
through practice you can learn to distinguish between the feelings of a tension and a completely relaxed muscle. with this awareness, we can begin to “cue” this relaxed state when we begin to feel muscle tension that accompanies stress, fear, and anxiety.

[Scroll] -> Decolonizing trauma informed yoga

Let’s be real here.

Yoga has always had a perspective of seeking to heal trauma and alleviate inner and outer anguish.

From ancient times, some thousands of years ago, rishis, yogis and sannyasis were involved in practices to find freedom from suffering.

These teachings were codified, developed and passed down for thousands of years through oral tradition, word of mouth, from teacher to student.

The main aim was seeking liberation from the things that cause us suffering.

To ignore and erase the roots of trauma informed is colonialist and racist.

Teaching on this in Office Hours for my Embrace Yoga’s Roots course today.

Wave Breath 〰️ some breath work & movement to try for when you’d like to pause, take a break, or let yourself ride the wave of what you’re feeling. Do it at your desk, on your commute, and wherever.

This kind of breathing & movement helps us reduce stress and build resiliency in our response to it. Diaphragmatic breathing (or known as abdominal breathing) stimulates the vagus nerve, stimulates the production of BDNF, and helps activate the PNS (parasympathetic nervous system).

This is essential because when we breathe and activate this response in the body, we are helping to create new neurons which act as building blocks to form new memory and responses towards our emotions and stress in the body. With deep diaphragm breathing creating new and stronger neurons, we can create new memory + learning in response to stress, anxiety, trauma, and built up emotions in the body.

Seasons breathings 🌬✨❄️ This holiday season, there’s no right or wrong way to feel or way you “ should” be experiencing them. Our breath is a healing tool that is always with us. It’s not a tool we use to fix our experiences or do away with negative feelings, but instead, our breath provides us with a way to harness our biology and create space for our inner experiences - whatever those may be. An invitation to be with, rather than resist, however you are feeling 💛

11/12/2019

Fear is a necessary human emotion. Sometimes the ways that fear, or unresolved fear manifests in the body makes us wish we never had to experience it. Fear is an essential emotion to keep us SAFE and alive. But an overabundance of fear in our bodies can lead to negative impacts for us, and trying to get rid of fear felt in our bodies or numbing/distracting ourselves from fear only deepens its hold on us. It is actually by allowing ourselves to feel these uncomfortable sensations that they can shift, decrease, and dissipate on their own.

When feeling fear or anxiety, try this practice:

1. Begin to notice some of the sensations in your body.
2. Take several moments - 1 minute to name as many of the sensations you can that you feel in your body: (pounding heart, tightness in chest, shaky hands, upset in my stomach)
3. You do not need to think too much about the sensations: just allow yourself to name them when you notice, and move on to the next.
4. You may bring a hand to connect to where you feel the most sensation; or anywhere that feels best in this moment. *Important to note, a lack of sensation, is also a sensation.
5. Begin to breathe in to fill the belly, and breathe out to empty the belly, while noticing the sensation in your body.
6. Try to observe without any judgement. You may remind yourself that your body’s fear response is trying to keep you safe in this moment.
7. Continue to breathe for 5-10 breaths, or however many feels good for you.
8. You may move your attention to another sensation you notice in your body and breathe while you stay with the sensation, simply noticing.
9. Bring your attention back toward your surroundings, and continue to practice as needed.

Often when we experience distressing and uncomfortable body sensations, the discomfort we are feeling is our brilliant, yet primitive survival mechanisms which have the biological function to keep us alive.

The nervous system has three main functions: 1) To collect sensory input from the body and external environment. 2) To process and interpret the sensory input. 3) To respond appropriately to the sensory input.

However, at times our bodies react to situations/sensory inputs that aren’t life threatening, and our protective systems still work to prepare us for danger that is not present.

When our bodies are responding to threats that aren’t present; it’s not comfortable, and we may want to change or get rid of the sensation, instead of allowing space to try and simply notice, without judgment In these moments, we can come back to the body with our breath, and remind ourselves that its our body’s way of trying to keep us safe. It’s an outdated but incredible survival mechanism that is highly reactive in our stressful, modern world. it’s nothing that is wrong with you.
