Let’s talk about combining foods together! It’s an added layer of sensory input and textures to manage from an oral-motor standpoint, which is why it’s the hardest kind of food to eat. Think about a bite of soup: warm liquid, slippery noodle, chewy chicken, squishy carrot, peas that pop. It’s A LOT for a little mouth to figure out.

My daughter and I are learning to combine foods in a way that is less stressful for her— so of course we HAD to to make the bluey toast all over TikTok. How’d we do?! 💙🧡

Check out our yogurt paint masterpieces! 🎨This activity is a really fun way to learn about purées, which can be a tricky texture for a lot of kids.

My friend and I started by mixing our colors with a spoon, and moved up the steps to eating to painting with our fingers/whole hand, smelling it, and snake tasting our art! My job was to make sure I was modeling at the right level & and his job was to notice if his body cues were telling him he was ready to try it. Today, he was with this food!

Food school sessions use food hierarchies to help introducing new foods feel a little easier for kids! Each food is connected to the one before it by at least one sensory property like color, shape, texture, or temperature. A good hierarchy includes a starch, fruit/veggie, and a protein. It also has various textures like purées, hard munchables, and meltables to help your child learn to manipulate different types of food!

Can you spot all the connections in this hierarchy?!

Did you know it takes a kid’s brain 🔟 tries of a new food before they decide if they like it or not?? Their brains need multiple exposures to process the taste, texture, smell, and to learn how to chew it… when a kid has a big reaction to a new food (think scrunched up faces and little wrinkled noses), it’s their nervous system responding to the new thing, not necessarily that they don’t like it! I like to tell kids that they have to say they’re “still learning” about the food until they send it to their bellies 10 times!

Feeling so excited and grateful to be included in this year’s SOS certification course! They only offer it once a year for 6-8 therapists, so getting into the course is really exciting! Can’t wait to grow my skills to better support my kiddos 🍽️

Wondering what SOS is? Send me a message for more info 😊

It may look like just a burger— but this is THE burger. This burger represents a year of feeding therapy progress. My buddy was able to smell, lick, and ultimately eat half of this burger after 3 years of eating only McDonald’s French fries and one kind of Ge**er meal. He then carried this over to home, decided to explore/eat Doritos, and to lick a teriyaki wrap!

There were happy tears and happy bellies today 💜

Holidays with picky eaters can be really hard, but there are ways we can help support our kids and keep the day fun!

Holidays present a lot of fun new foods for kids to learn about—However, it is NOT the time to expect them to eat them.

Kids are usually excited, overtired, and more dysregulated on holidays, which makes learning about new foods even harder.

Keep the holiday fun by reducing stress around food:

1) Bring & offer your child's preferred foods…the goal is to get energy and nutrition into their bodies ☺️

2) Avoid pressure around trying new foods!

3) Talk about food neutrally (color, flavor, texture versus good/bad)

4) Support your child's sensory system by offering a break to recharge prior to eating

Have a great holiday! 🦃

This image is such a good way to explain why food can be hard for kids (and adults!), especially neurodivergent people and those with sensory differences.

Feeding therapy isn’t about changing a person’s preferences or making them learn to like foods that they don’t— it’s all about helping them build awareness of their own unique sensory system and problem solving how to make food work better for them.

No treatment is exactly the same, which is what makes it fun!

Happy Halloween from Happy Bellies! Holidays are such a fun way to encourage exploration and play with new and different foods! This week, we made Jack-o-pears, used chocolate hummus and pretzels to paint monsters, and candy corn as vampire teeth!

Kids explore new foods with their eyes, hands, and noses before it makes it to their mouths. Food crafts and games help keep it silly and fun! 👻
