Route 301 in Portage-du-Fort to close overnight for bridge repairs

Drivers who use Route 301 in Portage-du-Fort should plan ahead. The road will close completely on some weeknights over the next six weeks while crews pour concrete for structure repairs.

Quebec’s Ministry of Transportation says the full closures will run from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m., Monday to Wednesday, on these dates:

October 19 to 21
October 26 to 28
November 2 to 4
November 9 to 11
November 16 to 18
November 23 to 25

Outside those hours, traffic will move through the work zone in alternating single-lane traffic until the project wraps up, expected at the end of November.

During the closures, a detour will run via Routes 301, 148, 40, 17 and 653. The Ministry is asking drivers to allow extra travel time. Anyone planning to cross the river can check the Quyon Ferry website at quyonferry.com for current conditions.

The schedule could change, with work postponed, extended or cancelled because of weather or operational issues.

An 11-year-old behind the wheel at 2:50 a.m.?

Two kids, aged 11 and 9, took a parent’s vehicle without permission early Monday morning in Pembroke, and the joyride ended in a cornfield.

Upper Ottawa Valley OPP say an officer on foot patrol in Pembroke’s west end heard a vehicle doing burnouts around 2:50 a.m. on Oct. 12. Officers found the vehicle on Jean Avenue, but it sped off when they tried to stop it. Police did not give chase.

Shortly after, the vehicle was found off the road in a cornfield near Jean Avenue and TV Tower Road in Laurentian Valley, abandoned. The OPP Canine Unit and Emergency Response Team were called in, and the two children were found about an hour later with no serious injuries.

The vehicle was towed and the kids were returned to their parents. No charges will be laid, since both are under the age of criminal responsibility (12 in Canada).

Parents, this might be a good week to check where the car keys are kept. 🔑

We’ve all been impatient for a coffee. Most of us just wait.

According to the Sécurité publique de la MRC des Collines-de-l’Outaouais, yesterday around 9:30 a.m. at the Chelsea McDonald’s, a woman ordered a coffee, got tired of waiting and left without it. Moments later, her partner stormed in, told off the manager (“she only wanted a coffee!”), marched behind the counter, shoved the manager aside and poured one himself.

He then left through the employees-only door, and the couple drove off together.

The twist? Police identified the pair because they were recognized as former McDonald’s employees from Gatineau. So technically, he knew where everything was.

At the complainants’ request, no charges will be laid and no ticket issued.

Be kind to the people behind the counter. They make your coffee so you don’t have to.
