🌿 Medicinal Plants & Natural Dyes Immersion – San Cristóbal 🌿

Offered by Rainforest Chemistry in collaboration with the women’s association Chami Jablablo, this experience is the result of over 18 years of shared work, learning, and trust.

This is not a commercial tour.
It is a guided, in-depth immersion into the rainforest and its living knowledge.

We begin with a 2-hour easy jungle hike, exploring medicinal plants and natural dyes through:
🌱 traditional Ngäbe knowledge
🌿 botany and plant identification
🧪 biochemistry and active properties
🌎 cultural context and cosmovision

Along the way, shares a short talk:
🍫 “The Theorem of Theobroma” — a unique perspective on cacao, connecting science, culture, and complexity.

After the walk, we gather for a warm, home-cooked traditional lunch, prepared by the women using local ingredients from the land and forest—an authentic moment of sharing.

The experience continues with a hands-on demonstration workshop, bringing together the extraction of plant-based fibers and natural dyes, and the weaving of the traditional Ngäbe bag (Kra).

Guided in English, Spanish, or French, with small groups (max. 12 people), this experience is designed for meaningful exchange, curiosity, and connection.

A moment to slow down, learn, and truly engage—with the forest and the women who share it.

In the coming week, we’re offering three cultural and educational experiences rooted in shared knowledge, respectful exchange, and care for people and plants.

📅 DATE – Monday June 15th.
Cultural Immersion: Natural Dyes, Fibers & Ngäbe Cosmovision.
A half-day cultural experience in the San Cristóbal community centered on ancestral techniques for extracting natural dyes and fibers from rainforest plants. The experience includes a talk and shared presentation on Ngäbe spirituality and cosmovision, offering insight into the worldview that connects plants, people, and territory through living knowledge.

📅 DATE – Thursday June 18th.
Botanika Garden Experience.
A 75-minute guided walk exploring the colonial history of tropical plants that shaped medicine, food, and trade in the Americas.

Medicinal Plants & Natural Dyes Path.
A gentle rainforest walk focused on medicinal plants with Ngäbe women in the San Cristóbal community, followed by a traditional tribal lunch prepared over a fire pit, and a demonstration and hands-on workshop on the extraction of natural fibers and plant-based dyes.

Step into the heart of the Ngäbe culture with a unique half-day experience celebrating the ancient art of extracting natural dyes and fibers from rainforest plants. 🍃 Learn side by side with an incredible group of Ngäbe women artisans who keep these ancestral traditions alive — transforming roots, bark, and leaves into vibrant, living colors. 🌈🌱
Introduction by Mathilde Grand, who has spent 26 years in Bocas del Toro learning from the rainforest and its people, this experience is about sharing knowledge, listening, and discovering together. It’s a journey of connection — between people, plants, and the natural wisdom that sustains both. 🌿
As we explore the world of plant-based dyes, we’re also reminded of something vital: the colors we wear matter. 👕 Unlike the chemical dyes found in most modern fabrics, natural dyes nurture both our health and the environment, bringing us closer to a more harmonious way of living. 🌍✨

"There are few systematic studies but there is abundant evidence, from scientific articles to social media reports, that the problem is global,” says Martín. “There are records of primates killed on power lines in all regions where they occur, especially in the tropical forests of America, Africa and Asia, ecosystems where this group is most abundant and diverse.

“Logically, incidents are more frequent where high primate density coincides with a high density of power lines, particularly when forest ecosystems are fragmented,” he says.

Electric shock is one of the biggest causes of death among wildlife in the country but a court ruling is a first step to making power lines safe
