Today, on this full moon, we celebrate Gurupūrṇimā to honour our teachers and the source of teachings.

Guru is more than just a teacher. They are a guiding light, a source of wisdom and knowledge, and a source of inspiration on our life’s journey. Gurus can be formal spiritual teachers, or they can be informal mentors who have shaped our lives in profound ways.

Guru Purnima celebrates the power of knowledge to illuminate our paths and lead us towards a more fulfilling life. It’s a day to reflect on the impact our Gurus have had on us and to express our gratitude for their guidance.

Wishing you a joyous Guru Purnima. May your path be illuminated by the light of knowledge.

A new tradition stating today. I wrote a letter to my future self - to be opened next year on this day, September 15th, 2023.

A letter, speaking to my future self. A letter expressing where I currently am, and championing the person I love.

Birthdays bring up a lot for different people, at different times of life. As I age, I become ever more grateful to the days I have here in this form. I am grateful to share these days with the people I love, to have the opportunity to continue to learn, grow and expand. I’m grateful for the community that supports me, and puts trust in me to guide them through their own wellness healing journey.

Most of all, I’m grateful for the insight and experience I gain with each passing day.

I don’t have expectations of this ‘new tradition’ for myself, but I do have a hope. That the girl who opens this letter next year feels loved, supported and grateful.

According to Ayurveda, the energies of the seasons impact the environment, and all living things. As such, the doshas can be seen as more prevalent as certain times of year.

The northern hemisphere, now deep into the season of summer, we are in the season of Pitta.

The weather is warm to hot and, depending on where you live, the environment might be more humid, retaining water in the air and in the soil for plants to blossom - which might find its way into your body (body temperature rising more easily, water retention stuck in the hands and feet).

This time of year can increase a person’s intensity through both mind and body. The mind might become more irritated, judgemental and hyper focused, while the body might show signs of inflammation, water retention, acidic digestion and skin irritations.

But rest assured that we can all enjoy the passion of the Pitta season without getting too overheated by following some basic principles that help to balance out its qualities, including:

Avoid being out for too long in the hottest part of the day (10am-2pm)
Cool down the mind and body through lifestyle and yogic practices
Avoid heating foods such as hot spices, ginger, peppers and onions
Get in the water and swim!

Here, in the northern hemisphere we can feel the depth of winter, where the weather has turned from windy and dry to cold and damp. According to Ayurveda, this latter part of the winter and into early spring is the season of Kapha.

Kapha is the Ayurvedic dosha made up of earth and water elements, and its qualities are wet, heavy, cold, slow, dull and dense. No matter what your doshic dominance, you will be effected by this change in season.

Take notice of how your mind and body are in these months, and if you’re experiencing any of these changes.

Join our FREE Digital Discovery program where we share insights and tips on how to regain balance through these seasonal shifts. And if you’re interested to support and kick start your digestive fire, join our upcoming workshop in March (links in bio).

This mantra summons Ganesha, the son of Shiva and Parvati; the God of wisdom, the lord of good fortune, remover of obstacles and master of knowledge.

This mantra translates to “Salutations to Ganesha, the remover/breaker of obstacles, we call your name!”

Call on Ganesha to clear your path when you feel stuck or creatively blocked, when you need a change of perspective, or when life feels especially challenging and you’re not sure why.

Practice suggestion:
* Say before embarking on a journey
* Say when you feel afraid
* Say silently during a difficult work meeting
* Say during a tense period in a close relationship

___
As we close out the first month of 2022, and get clear on your Sankalpa to move forward you with clarity and freedom, if you feel stuck, or have obstacles in your way, this is a great mantra to include in your daily practice.

Mantras are one way to practice mindfulness because we focus on a word or phrase as a way to calm and center the mind. In this sense, mantras help us slow down our brains and allow for more space in breath, mind, and body.

Mantras are a truly powerful practice. The words, phrases, or sounds you choose as your mantra in your yoga and meditation practices can help to not only keep your mind focused, but clear energies and connect you to the universal life force.

If you you’ve taken a yoga class, you’ve likely heard it being referred to as a PRACTICE. Simply put - this foundational to Yoga and a life of calm and meaning. The ultimate purpose when we put the practice into practice is that every day will present the opportunity to experience the same posture, meditation, mundane routine in the life of Covid - differently. And how we become present to each day, and its differences allows us to develop greater awareness to the experiences in each moment, leaving behind expectation, and the need for something to be different than what it is.

How many of you have done downward dog and experienced it differently from the first to the last in class? Or gone for a run - one day feeling “off”, when you felt great the day before. Or sat in on the same weekly team meeting, but one week, the vibe is different, and so you find yourself reacting differently.... When we become aware of these differences, without creating a story to why they exist - and just acknowledge them - we can adapt, adjust and support ourselves in the moment that we are actually experiencing, without comparing it to another time or different expectation.

This is the fundamental purpose and brilliance behind the practice.

And when we develop and nurture this practice on and OFF THE MAT, we are able to bring awareness to the routines of our life so that we experience them fully and presently.

It starts by creating awareness, through the practices of Yoga (movement, breath, reflection, meditation)- daily. And through daily practice, we create the opportunity to deepen our awareness of the very moments that make up our life. And in doing so, it has the power to positively change and regulate our emotional and mental responses to situations in our life.

In honour of World Meditation Day today, instead of reminding you of the importance and impact of the practice... here are a few practical setups to inspire.

By no means do you need to go out and purchase any of these. But let them be examples of cushions, seats and ultimately height for your body to sit on.

The number one limiting factor people come to me with on why they can’t meditate (after they understand that all minds chatter) is that their body gets uncomfortable sitting for so long. The body starts wanting to fidget, it falls asleep, it slouches, etc.

Know that you are not alone. We each have experienced these discomforts at first. In order to get past these discomforts and distractions, we need to practice - which helps the body & mind settle. But more importantly, to help relieve the body, be sure to set yourself up comfortably.

ELEVATE your pelvis so the hips are higher than your knees. In the olden days, we would say ‘sit on the yellow pages’. If you still have one kicking around... it’s the perfect use! Otherwise, use pillows, stacked blankets a bolster, blocks or even on an upright chair.

Once settled, invite the sit bones to really root down into that support and feel your spine lengthen up to the sky. Start there and breathe for 10 really long, full, slow, deep breaths. So this daily, working your way up to 20 breaths and then 30 and so on. This alone is a short practice of awareness... and that my friends is the foundation to meditation.

The other key to building a practice is understanding and respecting your doshic constitution and how that affects your practice.

To learn more on that and so much more about the sister sciences of Yoga and Ayurveda, join our mailing list (link in bio). Be in the know of our re-launch coming up next month. We have new offerings to serve every person wherever you are in your wellness journey - tying the concepts of Ayurveda so you can honour yourself and your present needs.

Until then, let us know where you’re at in your meditation journey. Curious about the practice? Start and stop.. just can’t make it consistent? Or are you a seasoned practitioner, with tips to share?

Before you hydrate - tongue scrape!

Our body is a natural detox machine. It’s so intelligent and has quite the operation working on the inside. Especially while we’re resting and sleeping.

It is digesting the previous day’s food and experiences - pulling what it needs to thrive and releasing the toxins.

By morning, the body releases these toxins through all of its entry and exits. Including your mouth!

Your mouth is full of so many toxins when you wake. The only way to truly get them out is to scrape them out. BEFORE you brush your teeth. Otherwise, you’re just brushing these toxins around, many of which stay in the body.

Invest in a tongue scraper and scrape 8 times in the morning. Your digestion, and overall health will thank you.

Ayurveda is the science of life.

It encourages us to return back to our true nature and deepen our sense of awareness.

It teaches us that we have the knowledge within us, when we pay attention.

It starts by living presently and paying attention to our actions - through mind, body and soul.

In our daily (morning) practice, there are plenty of ways to pay attention.

Start by looking into the bowl when you eliminate and notice... what are the qualities of what I’m eliminating?? It came from the inside, which will tell us what physical qualities exist within our digestion.

This information can lead us to bringing our physical bodies back into balance.

✨✨✨

Pay attention. Listen. Look. Be. Then adjust and shift where necessary.

🙏
