Black lives matter means more than just defunding the police. That is just one of the many systems that promote and perpetuate anti-blackness. When I saw the large =defund the police, I felt like the protests and activism was falling on deaf ears. Yes, we need to defund the police and build stronger communities. But that is not the equivalent and real issue at hand. The world is anti-Black and that’s what we need to address.

Anti-black is literally ingrained in every part of the globe that darker skin is somehow less human. Let’s tackle the root of the problem.

Some risk factors for high blood pressure can’t be changed. Those includes:

Age: as we age, our blood vessels become less flexible and elastic. This causes the blood vessels to become more rigid and increases your risk for high blood pressure.

Gender: Men are more at-risk to get high blood pressure than women at a younger age. Once women become 65 and older, they have a higher chance of getting high blood pressure.

Race: Black people in America tend to develop high blood pressure more than any group. This strongly connected to the lack of fresh foods (fruits/vegetables), access to grocery stores and institutional policies and disproportionately affect black communities. Since food apartheids are fixable, race is a risk factor that CAN be changed.

High blood not only affects your heart and blood vessels but it has damaging effects on other areas of the body.

Brain:
In the brain, high blood pressure can cause blood vessels to weaken and burst resulting or clot can block vessels leading to a Stroke.

Eyes:
Continued high blood pressure can weaken the blood vessels that supply blood to the eyes. This can cause double vision or even vision loss. Damaged blood vessels in the eyes can burst, causing floaters in vision.

Heart:
Damaged blood vessels can cause the blood to receive less blood and clots to form. The heart begins to work harder to pump blood through the body. This can cause chest pain, abnormal heartbeats, and lead to a heart attack and/or heart failure.

Kidneys:
As with other areas of the body, when blood vessels supplying blood to the kidneys are damaged due to high blood pressure, they begin to fail. The kidneys are the filters of the body and over time they lose the ability to filter waste from the body.

Sexual dysfunction:
In order to become aroused during s*x, extra blood flows to the va**na and p***s. When blood pressure is consistently high, the blood vessels supplying blood to those area are not able to supply enough blood for your best performance. This creates erectile dysfunction in men and low libido and va**nal dryness in women.

Legs:
When are blood vessels become narrow, it’s easy for blood clots to form and get trapped. These clots can break off and cause a stroke, heart attack and clot in lungs.

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, consult your doctor. If you have high blood pressure, now your numbers. Modify your diet as much as possible especially reducing salt and processed foods.

Blood pressure is the measure of force of blood on the walls of the blood vessels as it travels throughout the body. If blood pressure is consistently high, it makes the heart and the blood vessels work harder and less efficiently.

Blood vessels are normally elastic and flexible, allowing blood to flow freely throughout the body. High blood pressure damages the blood vessels, making them weak and small tears begin to form. Once small tears form, bad cholesterol floating in blood, attaches itself to the blood vessel walls making them less flexible and narrow. As damage continues, the blood vessels continue become narrower and narrower making the heart work harder to get blood and oxygen throughout the body.

There are often no symptoms at all, while this is happening in your body and that’s why it’s called a “silent killer”. There are also no concrete list of symptoms that indicate that your blood pressure is high. A diagnosis should be made by your doctor so you both can develop a treatment plan to help control your blood pressure.

There are two types of strokes: hemorrhagic and ischemic. Hemorrhagic stroke happens when the blood vessels supplying blood and oxygen to the brain rupture or burst. This causes bloods to fill the limited space in the skull; creating pressure and swelling in the brain; leading to brain cell damage and even death.

The second and most common type of strokes are ischemic strokes. This means that there is a blockage (clot) in the vessels that supplies blood and oxygen to the brain. A blockages or clots can be caused by blood clots that travel through the circulatory system or fatty buildup or plaque in arteries that breaks off and travels to the brain. Once there is a blockage in the brain, the brian cells begin to damage and can eventually die.

One of the main reasons it’s important to act F.A.S.T when you think someone is having a stroke is because if actions are corrected quickly, it can prevent permanent brain damage and death. The effects of permanent damage can look like weakness and/or paralysis (loss of movement) on one or both sides of the body; speaking difficulties, eating/drinking difficulties; eye sight changes, etc.

Mourning the loss of a loved one is hard but mourning during a global pandemic can be isolating and complicated. The normal rituals and activities that may provide comfort in difficult times have been severed by the coronavirus crisis.

For people who are grieving:
➡️Stay connected with your loved ones
➡️Find online support through virtual therapy or your communities
➡️Don't feel ashmed or guilty for the feelings you have right now
➡️Do your best to take care of yourself by getting rest, eating and showering daily. ➡️Stay away from the news and other outlets that may trigger unwanted feelings

If you want to support someone:

➡️Be there as much as you can, virtually, to support the person you care about
➡️Help problem solve for them so they don't have to ask for help.
➡️Send care packages and food delivery.
➡️ Often times, we are unable to problem solve when our bodies and minds are in a state of emergency, so get creative with ways you can support

What ways are you supporting a grieving loved one during these times?

Ever wondered why your doctor sometimes gives you antibiotics and other times not? The type of infection, bacterial or viral, determines the type of treatment you will need.

Bacterial and viral infections can have similar symptoms like sneezing, running nose, and fever and be spread in similar ways too like touching contaminated surfaces or having close contact with people who are sick.

Most bacteria are harmless and can actually help the body digest food and even fight cancer cells. Bacteria is treated with antibiotics and rarely turn into a disease.

Viruses can’t be treated with antibiotics and can often cause diseases in the cells they attached themselves to. Immunization and antiviral medications can help cure, reduces and prevent the spread of a virus.

“I know today is Monday and you assume it’s going to suck, but according to statistics, there will be over 5000 weddings, 10,000 child births, and 42 million hugs occurring today throughout the United States. Also today, there will be at least 4 people that will win the multimillion dollar lotteries, 600 people will get promotions at work, and 3000 people will lose their virginity. There will also be 600 dogs adopted, 35,000 balloons sold and 80,000 skittles sold. Plus, the words “I love you” will be said over 9 million times. So again, I know today is Monday and you assume it’s going to suck but just smile, because according to statistics, it should actually be a really nice day.”

Go conquer the week good people!

Quick lessons are back and we’re kicking them off with food allergies vs. food intolerances. Gluten-free, lactose-free, no soy, even red meat - It has become increasingly common to have dietary restrictions due to reactions to certain foods. But knowing the difference between true food allergy and a food intolerance is very important. While allergy and intolerance are often referred to as the same thing, there are definitely major differences: Food allergies are serious and can be life-threatening; Food intolerances generally are not life-threatening and produce more of an uncomfortable digestive reactions.

If you’re experiencing issues with certain foods or have no idea at all, be sure to chat with your doctor about your concerns. He or she can provide guidance on dietary restrictions and order any allergy tests that may be needed.
