Stressed?

Diabetes and stress don't go well together. If you feel stressed often and notice high blood glucose because of it, it is not something to just dismiss.

There are many ways to manage stress, but the remedy for high glucose is either exercise or insulin. But without insulin available, not even exercise will always do the trick.

If you are using insulin and especially if you are completely insulin dependent, you may need to increase your insulin dosages on stressful days or before stressful events.

I recently went on a very challenging hike to Wolfberg arch in the Cederberg.

Physical activity and insulin/blood glucose management is always challenging. Cardiovascular exercises causes a sudden spike in the blood sugar if there is no insulin available. But after about 30 to 60 minutes of exercise, the blood sugar will start dropping.

We are always taught that exercise will decrease our sugar but the part where insulin is needed to make that happen, is often left out! This can cause ketone bodies to build up leaving you feeling dizzy and nauseous!

If you do cardio (especially in the morning when your last short acting insulin was before dinner) consider taking a small amount of short acting insulin, even if it is 1-2 units, before getting your heart rate up.

Happy new year! 🥳

I wonder what your goals are for 2024? Not resolutions but goals.

If one of your goals are to take back control over your blood glucose management, I can help you achieve and keep achieving that goal!

A goal, as one of my friends recently wisely stated, is something you can continue to work toward. Resolutions only last a short while.

Here are some of the services I provide:

• Diabetes friendly meal plans (and lunch boxes)
• Training you on making small changes to achieve big outcomes (diabetes basics)
• Insulin pump training and set-up
• Glucose sensor insertion and interpretation
• Insulin management and titration
• Carbohydrate counting

Do you feel your glucose management is suboptimal? I can give you the tools you need to help you help yourself.

Don't put your health on hold!!

Struggling to lose weight? It may be time to start making your "Z's" count.

How can sleep influence your weight?

"Sleep restriction increases hunger and appetite by altering metabolic and endocrine function; glucose and insulin sensitivity decreases and the evening levels of cortisol and ghrelin increase, while leptin decreases."¹

Ghrelin is a hormone produced in the stomach, small intestine, the brain and pancreas. This hormone increases appetite and promotes fat storage.

Leptin in contrast to Ghrelin, is a hormone released by adipose (fat) tissue and the small intestine that surpresses appetite.

"A chronic pattern of sleep duration of ≤6 hours a night has been associated with a higher body mass index (BMI)."²

A study done by Thompson and colleagues was one of the first studies reporting a relationship between sleep and success of weight loss.

"The study findings suggested that better sleep quantity and quality increased the likelihood of successful weight loss by 33%, in agreement with other, mainly observational, studies."³

There are many more studies, exploring the relationship between sleep and weight and it is clear that there is truth to making enough sleep a priority.

Summer is here and so are FRUIT!!

If you are wondering which are safe for consumption on a *low carb diet*, wonder no more!

Take note of the portion sizes and remember, even if it's low carb, it will still increase your blood sugar.

To my fellow Type 1's out there: no insulin, no fruit! If you are not up for that extra injection, try snacking on protein and fats instead.

Remember: moderation, moderation, moderation.

Hallo Garden Route!

On 1 December 2023, my dream came true. I started my practice as a diabetes educator from my own home!!

I am a qualified and registered dietitian and have worked for three years as a diabetic educator before deciding to open this practice.

The birth of my baby girl was one of the catalysts for this project but also my absolute passion for diabetes and people living with it.

I am a type 1 diabetic myself, going for 16 years of living with this condition.

If you are looking for someone who really understands what you are going through with this condition, who is an expert in food and diets for people living with diabetes and who can help you navigate through life with this condition, I'm your gal!

Reach out! You are not alone!

My contact details are 076 859 7739 or [email protected]

I hope to hear from you!!
