ASKING FOR SUPPORT 🌟 “When I’m struggling with a meal or snack, I find it helpful to hear…”.

Using coping statements and positive reframes can be a helpful way to remain recovery focussed. But it can also be helpful to hear these sentiments echoed by our loved ones and those around us too 💕.

It’s often super helpful for a loved one to have some phrases to use when they want to help and support a loved one who they see is maybe struggling… they might initially be unsure about what exactly to say.

These can be pretty individual person-to-person, so it might be worth spending a little bit of time having a think about phrases that you might find helpful to hear from those you are sharing meals with.

Here are some examples that clients have often shared that they find helpful 👉.

🦋 Which others would you add? Pop any compassionate and supportive phrases in the comments below.

2) “Is there a helpful distraction I can offer?”
3) “Try and make a start”
4) “The eating disorder does not have your best interests at heart.”
5) “I know that this meal was tricky for you and that it took a big effort.”
6) “I’m sorry you don’t feel well, but that’s not a reason to skip lunch.”
7) “Every time you challenge your fears, the eating disorder loses power.”

If the latest lockdown announcement has meant the ED voice/ inner critic has got louder...

✨ Gosh I really see you if you’re struggling with the announcement of new restrictions in the UK this week 💕.

It’s brought up some tricky feelings for a lot of us, and I thought I’d share a particular conversation that I’ve had with some folks this week 👇.

Have you noticed the ED voice & inner critic using the revised lockdown restrictions and mentions of exercise ‘allowances’ as reasons to dial up the negative and judgemental self talk around exercise/physical activity?.

May I invite you to try...
🌸 Reframing the allowance to leave home to exercise as an opportunity to get out of the house &/or see a friend.
🍁 I know it’s cold and can often be a bit rainy this time of year, but might you want to use it as a chance to meet a friend on a park bench with a flask of tea/ hot choc (in line with the current lockdown rules in England).
🍃 Take a step outside all wrapped up and take some deep breaths?
🌳 This could provide an opportunity to practice some grounding techniques (e.g. breathe work, or noticing colours) in nature before returning indoors to get cosy.

It’s equally valid to completely ignore any of these suggestions and stay wrapped up inside! ☕️🕯

It can be hard to treat your body with kindness and gentleness if you’ve been so used to feeling at war with it.

But as reminds us, being friends with our body is still an option 🧡 and it’s okay if it takes some time and practice.

Reposted with kind permission from ✨ who I really recommend giving a follow for her sage words of wisdom, mega cute art ✏️ & the all important 🥪

A gentle reminder - You are completely ‘allowed’ to eat more than one carbohydrate (grain or potato food) in one meal.

Yep, that means you can totally have...
🍝 Garlic bread with your spaghetti bolognese.
🍟 Chips with your burger & bun.
🥘 Naan with your rice & a curry.
etc.

How does this comment make you feel?

Is this a food rule that you’ve noticed showing up for you? .

Truth be told your body doesn’t know/mind that the carbohydrate you’re giving it is coming from more than 1 source... and in fact it might make it more likely that the meal provides a greater variety of nutrients! .

What other examples of these combos do you enjoy or would like to try?.

FOOD ISN’T MEDICINE (medicine is medicine) ... but following a meal plan as if it’s a prescription can be a helpful step in eating disorder recovery for some.

One of the core messages of the wellness industry and more specifically clean eating, that I feel has been pretty well debunked already is the old ‘food is medicine’ mantra.

I’m not trying to imply that food has no effect on our health, but the implication that certain foods and ways of eating will effectively cure or totally prevent various illness (and vice versa) is really very harmful for a lot of people’s relationships with food, bank balance and in some cases their actual immediate health and safety.

🥥 The examples I’m talking about here include the horror myths around coconut oil and celery juice being cure-all’s.

These messages also centre individual responsibility and are healthist and ableist at their cores.

The thing that makes me v sad is the false hope sold with these promises that food can cure various health conditions. And with this comes quite a lot of medicine-shaming. We’ve all heard similar stories - so and so switched up their diet and came off their anti-depressants or various other meds.

I feel super passionate about helping people find a way of managing their health (physical, mental, social, spiritual) in whichever ways work for them, but I can’t help that feel that these anecdotes always lead to the same conclusion - and medicine can be so so helpful for so many people - in the long as well as short term.

🙋‍♀️ But, I’ve also come to learn from some of my clients that treating their meal plan like a medical prescription can be a really helpful stage of eating disorder recovery for some people.

Folx working through ED recovery may very well find it helpful to think of their food as medicine, and it’s true that part of the ‘prescription’ for recovery from a restrictive eating disorder is to increase and regularise food intake.

All this is to say that I think there’s space for both in our rhetoric around food and recovery.

Hello, dear readers (if i still have any of those!), I’m writing this on one of my favourite kinds of days - the kind that i wish that i could bottle up and have every day. The sun’s out, with a beautiful refreshing breeze so that i can sit outside without a jumper, but am not becoming a puddle. For whilst I adore a hot hot holiday, normally (referring to ‘non-holiday life’ rather than ‘non-coronavirus life’ here for a change!) I’m a Brit through and through and don’t love being too hot and sticky. [ 1,569 more word ]

Continuing the conversation from the post on this evening ...

✨ Our bodies are meant to change throughout our lives.

✨ It’s a myth that we’re done growing, developing and blooming once we enter into our 20’s.

✨ Our beautiful bodies are meant to carry on changing - it’s entirely natural. You don’t need to keep your ‘late teen’ body.

✨ Plenty of things will play into how and why our bodies change and none of them mean we’re doing anything wrong.

As put it, “here’s to [our] fluctuating, ever changing, ever blossoming bodies” 🌺.

Morning! And happy Sunday 🌸.

I’ve shared a post on the blog this weekend with a few ideas, suggestions, inspirations for snacks - you know, the kind that are actually satisfying and don’t leave you hungrier than when you started?! 🤷🏼‍♀️ With no sad rice cakes in sight!.

FYI there are no serving sizes because I’m not into that - you find what’s best for your appetite - somedays you’ll be hungrier and other days maybe not.

And it’s not an exhaustive list - so I’d love to hear what your favourite snacks are 👇.

We all need rest ✨ whether that is rest from using your ‘work brain’ (🙋‍♀️ me this weekend), doing something just for the fun and frivolity of it, or physical rest (maybe in the form of a Netflix/sofa session).

As a recovering perfectionist + all-round ‘do-er’, learning to take time to rest and relax was hard - even now I sometimes have to remind myself, “my productivity is not my worth” 💕.

Do you struggle with this sometimes too?.

How do you like to rest + relax? .
