Please be aware that Pertussis (Whooping cough) is significantly active in Iowa currently. This illness begins as most respiratory illnesses with cough and runny nose, about 5-10 days after exposure (though it can take up to 21 days); the cough becomes increasingly worse during the seconds stage; during the third stage, the symptoms begin to diminish and resolve, but this may take weeks to months.

Perutssis is spread through respiratory droplets in the air - coughing, sneezing, someone talking in your face. Be aware of those you are around this holiday season; use goo handwashing, covery coughs and sneezes and avoid those who are ill.

Treatment includes antibiotics. Vaccination is recommended. Post exposure antibiotics are also recommended.
