Student Update – Fergusson Lemani, Nursing, Malawi

"Over the past year, I have been engaged in my third year of the Nursing and Midwifery program, which has been both intensive and rewarding. This period involved a combination of advanced theoretical learning and clinical practice, allowing me to deepen my understanding of patient care and apply my knowledge in real-life healthcare settings.
During this year, I successfully completed my academic courses and participated in clinical rotations in different hospital departments. These experiences helped me gain hands-on skills in areas such as child health, patient assessment, and basic nursing procedures. I also developed important professional qualities such as teamwork, communication, empathy, and critical thinking, which are essential in nursing and midwifery practice.
Looking ahead, I will be entering my fourth and final year of study, which is a significant stage in my training. My focus will be on completing my final coursework, undertaking clinical placements, and working on my research project. I aim to further improve my clinical competence, particularly in maternal and neonatal care, and ensure that I meet all the requirements for graduation. "

New student: Achileus Mwesiga Angelo, Clinical Officer, Tanzania

"My name is Achileus Mwesiga Angelo, a clinical medicine student at Mayday institute collage of sciences. I am a second year student persuing Diploma in Clinical medicine student (CMT).
This year I want to improve more in my practical skills because as a future medical officer it is very important to know how to handle patients in real situation not only theory. I also plan to read more
books and discussion with my fellow students so that we can help each other to understand difficult topics. I believe with hard work and prayers I will reach my goals and become a good doctor who can serve my community and help many people especially in rural areas where medical services are still limited."

Buddy Bradley: During my intership at Kagondo hospital in Tanzania I came in contact with Achileus and his father Angelo. During my time there, I learned a lot about the cultural similarities and differences, while having lots of interactions with the locals (working, cooking and footballing). I know people who support other students which made me interested. I am willing to help Achileus with his study!"

Achileus' application was discussed in November 2025 during our application selection day. With the help of iSTEPup, Achileus can continue his study in Clinical Medicine!

Nieuw bestuurslid – New board member

Graag willen we ons nieuwste bestuurslid voorstellen: Lonneke Holling! Lonneke zal het bestuur ondersteunen als Student Manager, als opvolger van Bente, die afscheid heeft genomen van het bestuur.

The iSTEPup team recently welcomed a new member, Lonneke Holling. Lonneke has taken over the responsibilities of student manager from Bente Hagen.

Lonneke: "After completing a degree in Human Rights and Humanitarian Action and working in global health for several years, I am currently in the final stages of my medical studies. Contributing to improving access to quality healthcare is important to me, which relies on the availability of skilled healthcare professionals. While I have had the opportunity to pursue an education and follow my interests, this not the reality for many others. During my studies and internships, including in India and Sierra Leone, I have witnessed firsthand the substantial impact that something as relatively simple as a scholarship can have, not only on students but also on their communities. I am therefore glad to contribute to supporting students through iSTEPup."

New student: Funny Nyomborowa, Nursing, Malawi

"My name is F***y Nyomborowa. I am 28 years old and from Malawi, and I am honored to have been selected as a new recipient of the iSTEPup Foundation scholarship. I am currently studying at Malamulo College of Health Sciences, where I am pursuing a
Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing and Midwifery. Being granted this scholarship is a great encouragement to me and to my family. It comes at a time when meeting school fees has been challenging, and your support gives me hope and strength to continue with my
education.
Over the past year, I have remained focused and committed to my studies in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Midwifery program. I have been actively attending both theoretical classes and clinical practical sessions, which have helped me improve my understanding and skills in patient care. Through my training, I have gained more confidence in performing nursing procedures and working with patients under supervision.
Currently, I am still in the clinical area for my practical training, where I continue to gain hands-on experience and strengthen my clinical skills. This exposure has greatly contributed to my growth as a student nurse. "

Buddy Rebecca: "I was approached by my student Funny as she seeks to fund her nursing education. Local economics have been very difficult as the currency value drops, so I was not surprised by her request. I was impressed by her initiative and despite the hardship, she is maintaining good marks and I observe that she is also an active leader in her class. I feel that iSTEPup can be confident in their investment in Funny."

Funny's application was discussed in November 2025 during our application selection day. With the help of iSTEPup, Funny can continue her study in Nursing!

New student: Martiniusi Byamungu, Clinical Medicine, Tanzania
"The new transition in my life of becoming a clinical medicine have permit me to find a good job to be able to take care of myself, my family, my community, my country. College, especially medical college in Tanzania is very expensive, so I wouldn’t be able to pay my own fees. To facilitate myself through college, I would need more than 6 years to save enough money to sustain myself through college.
This semester, I have embarked on a comprehensive educational journey across multiple foundational disciplines essential for developing into a competent medical professional. I have gained a solid grounding in understanding disease patterns, determinants of
health, and applying statistical methods to analyze health data. I learned about body systems such as the respiratory system, digestive system, and skeletal system. I also studied physiological processes and anatomical structures of the human body.
Overall, my progress during the first semester has been good. I am grateful for your support, which enables me to receive quality education as a future healthcare professional and clinical officer."

Buddy Pam: "I got to know Martiniusi during the construction of the school in the Kagera region. He volunteered from the very beginning: present every day, hardworking, friendly, and always willing to learn. His dream is to become a Clinical Officer so that he can help others and provide his family with a better future. He is intelligent, eager to learn, and has the right mindset to succeed. I believe that, with support from the iSTEPup foundation, he can truly achieve his dream and make a meaningful difference in his community."

Martiniusi's application was discussed in November 2025 during our application selection day. With the help of iSTEPup, Martiniusi can start his study to become a Clinical Officer!

Student update: Elenesto Kanthenga, Nursing, Malawi
"Despite challenges, I have been determined to fight for my dreams and complete my studies. I began searching for sponsorship opportunities on social media and that’s when I stumbled upon, iSTEPup Foundation. I was thrilled to discover that your organization offers support to students like me.
I am very excited to the iSTEPup foundation for helping me to achieve my longtime dream of becoming a professional nurse/midwife in my country. Being a professional nurse will help me to serve well as there high numbers of people living with HIV due to shortage of nurses in provision of preventive services like condoms, Prep and PEP and other is lack of access to health services due to long distances. I am willing to work in remote areas where a lot of people do not have access to health service.
Over the past year, my journey in the Bachelor of nursing and midwifery program at Mzuzu university has been both challenging and rewarding. This past semester I focused on research methodology, biostatics, medical surgical nursing two, principles and practice of education, principles and practice of management. These modules have provided me with the leadership tools necessary to manage hospital wards.
I completed specialized attachment at Kamuzu central hospital until February 2026. I rotated in several departments’ dermatology, EENT, burns, orthopedics and oncology experiencing different
approaches when managing patients with different complex conditions.
As I look ahead my next semester begins on 7th April 2026 it will be so demanding period as I move to medical surgical nursing 3(theatre, ICU, emergency, gynecology), psychiatric nursing
and community health nursing (gerontology, IMCI, occupational health). Despite the challenge I remain dedicated to my goal of becoming a professional nurse midwife. I am deeply grateful for
the support of the iSTEPup foundation, which allows me to focus on my mission of serving Malawian health care system."

Elenesto's application was discussed in June 2025 during our application selection day. With the help of iSTEPup, Elenesto can continue his study in Nursing!
