This is a hard post to share, as it’s not flattering … but it’s needed. If I can just help ONE PERSON, it will be worth it !
This here is a new symptom of my Coeliac Disease & probably the one that has been hardest to deal with(emotionally) - as it can’t be hidden.
Mid to late last year I started to notice my hair was knotting, tangling & losing volume, but just put it down to…Stress, Age , seasonal change ?!?!
Christmas came and went & within that time I got lazy … We ate out more, ordered more Uber Eats , I wasn't as vigilant at checking labels and I even had a naughty Macca’s one night after a few too many wines with friends.
Around January, I noticed that I was losing more than usual amounts of hair - when washing it, the drain hole would be covered with hair, wherever I sat I would leave trails of hair behind & when I woke in the morning my pillow would have heaps of hair on it. ( this is when I first sought medical help )
By February, my head of hair had just about halved & I was competing with the dogs with who dropped more hair around the house ( if you have beagles you will understand this is ALOT )
By March - it started coming out in clumps
I have been around the ringer these past few months, from GP’s , Endocrinologist to Cardiologists to try get some help and some definitive answers - I still don’t know if this is Alopecia Areata ( sudden hair loss in patches ) Hypothyroidism or both - but 2 things I do know is :
1) People with one autoimmune disease are likely to develop a second autoimmune condition!
2) It only took 1 month of me not taking my Coeliac disease 100% seriously for things to go from not so bad to terrible !
It is Coeliac Awareness week ( In Australia ) and I cannot stress enough that we need to start talking about this more - educating more and advocating more for the necessary changes that are much needed in our medical, pharmaceutical, education and food industries.
If you suspect you, your child or someone close to you may have coeliac disease or is presenting symptoms P L E A S E consider/suggest getting tested. This disease does not go away, you can’t out grow it - so don’t Guess - Test !
