I’m a walker. It seems to be the answer to everything.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Anxious or upset? Walk.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Happy and calm? Walk.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Isolated and unsure of everything in a pandemic? Walk.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I walked away from a lot the past few months, including this account. Including working out. Sure, I toss some dumbbells around a couple of times a week. But I never would’ve thought I’d go from powerlifting to the occasional bootcamp.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In many ways, I walked away from a large part of my identity. What a lesson that was, to see how easily my sense of self could be dismantled.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Society as we know it is shifting. I’m shifting. Many things have and are collapsing, but that leaves room to rebuild. Create a new identity–in the world, in myself, and maybe in you too.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I guess what I’m saying is there’s a light at the end of the tunnel. You just have to keep walking to get there.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

The past few months I’ve barely worked out. I’m lucky if I get into the gym twice a week. And I feel no need to apologize for that, despite the fact that I still train clients and work in the fitness space.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If you’re also going through a phase of inconsistency and feeling blah about it, consider that everything is unfolding the way it should. Profound acceptance of what is will give you peace with where you are on your journey.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If you’ve struggled with inconsistentcy, you can stop fighting yourself. Maybe this is just what’s supposed to be right now. And when you’re ready, you’ll pick it back up.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
There’s a difference between resignation and acceptance. Acceptance relies on the idea that something is happening for a reason, while resignation is essentially giving up.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
There’s an air of defeat and often of self-deprecation with resignation. I’d argue that acceptance is the opposite. It’s being okay with yourself and your journey, even if things don’t look the way you’d ideally like them to.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Maybe you aren’t working out because life is stressful, and you need to address that before adding more to your plate. Maybe you aren’t taking care of yourself because your heart is broken. Healing it is your priority. Maybe you just don’t feel like it. Then the reason is to find something that gives you joy, purpose, or drive.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Maybe you just want to take cute pictures at the beach instead of going to the gym. 🙋🏻‍♀️
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If you haven’t been working out as much, it’s okay. There are seasons for everything. I hope that instead of dragging yourself to the gym, you’re figuring out what makes you happy.

Change. Sometimes you choose it, and sometimes it chooses you.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Either way, it’s for the sake of growth, painful as it is. Take the lesson or wither.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I think of the plants I had on my bedroom window sill. For months, small pots and lack of sunlight stifled their growth. Once I repotted them and put them outside, they started to flourish immediately.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
For humans, leaving the confines of our comfort zone is not as easy, even if your roots are pressed up against the walls, wanting to spread.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
For whatever reason, we fear the bigger pot. Who will we become with all that space to grow?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I promise you, a bigger, better, heartier version of yourself.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
As often as possible, choose growth. It’s the most beautiful pain you’ll ever experience.

Just out here living my sturdy, wordy, 30something life.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Shirt is compliments of , run by . I’ve resonated so much with her words these past few months.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I’ve always been a sturdy girl, in both stature and spirit. Here’s to strength of body, mind, and especially heart.

What’s better: cardio or conditioning?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Cardio is a general term for cardiorespiratory exercise. It’s anything that gets your heart rate up. Usually when people say cardio, they mean steady state movement on a treadmill, elliptical, stairmaster, or good ol’ fashion running.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Conditioning is a type of cardio. It’s higher intensity and often involves the use of weights and/or calisthenics. It can look like high intensity interval training (HIIT) or a Crossfit style workout using a mix of weights and body-weight movements. The kettlebell swings I’m doing in the video fall into the conditioning category.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Conditioning typically places a higher demand on your body and has the potential to build more stamina, speed, strength, and power than steady state cardio.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
❗️BUT–that doesn’t necessarily make it “better.”
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Sure, if you’re looking for a shorter workout with more bang for your buck, conditioning is your best bet.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But high intensity workouts can be draining. Sometimes you just want to zone out and take it somewhat easy, and in that case steady state cardio is fine.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Keep in mind that you need to build up to higher intensity exercise. If you’re a beginner or have taken a long time off, regular ol’ steady state cardio is a good place to start.

🏃‍♀️“How much cardio should I be doing?”🏃‍♀️
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The answer is–like most things–it depends.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
1️⃣🅰️ Do you like cardio? No? (Me either.) Then don’t do much, if any at all. The 80s/90s trend of aerobics being the end-all, be-all of exercise is dead. And no, you won’t blow up like a balloon.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
1️⃣🅱️ Like cardio? Then huff and puff to your heart’s content (literally).
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
2️⃣ What’s your goal? If you want to do a triathlon, you’re going to need a lot of cardio. If getting strong and building muscle is your top priority, then cardio will need to take a backseat to lifting. If you just want to move and be healthy, then honestly–do whatever amount of cardio feels good to you.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
3️⃣How’s your recovery? This goes for both strength training and cardio/conditioning. If your workouts are leave you feeling tired and beat up for days after, it might be time to scale back.

If you’ve been to a commercial gym, you know that squat racks and barbells are hot commodities. They’re often taken. Usually by big, muscly, intimidating guys.
So what happens next? You say, “Screw this” and wander off to the machines or the dumbbell section.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I know it sucks to have to get in line for a barbell, but if you can spare five minutes, it’s worth it to wait for one.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If you want to see significant changes in your strength and muscle growth, one of the most efficient ways to do it is to get under (or over) the barbell.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Dumbbells are great, but doing a goblet squat with a 35 lb dumbbell isn’t going to yield the same results as back squatting your own body weight or more. (It’s perfectly fine if you can’t lift that heavy; the goal is to work up to it.)
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So when someone is between sets, politely ask how many more sets they have left, and wait. This is standard gym protocol. Remember that you have every right to be there and to ask for what you want.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
And just so you know, I’m putting together a brand-new program. This is specifically for women who are new to barbell training and want to get stronger and build muscle in 60 days. It’s a remote program, so you can join from anywhere in the world.

This is my body doing it’s thang. This is me working on being neutral about it.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
There’s freedom in accepting your natural set point–the place your body wants to sit when you’re taking care of it. It means making peace with the fact that you don’t want to sacrifice 90% of your social life to have abs.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
There was a point in time where I wanted to look like a skeleton. Not literally, but not far off. Dieting, exercising, and picking apart my body were all I thought of. I could’ve spent those thoughts creating, learning, connecting, making a difference.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Although I’ll never get that time back, I don’t regret it. It was part of my journey, one that’s taught me an excruciatingly slow lesson in acceptance. In all honesty, I’m still learning that lesson.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Here’s to those of us striving to let our bodies take up physical space, not mental space.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Full disclaimer: I am a huge proponent of following a program, although I’m not currently on one. Lately I’ve been doing somewhat random workouts because I needed a break. It’s a season many of us will go through. I WILL BE BACK THO!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
However, the benefits of following a program are undeniable. If you want progress in strength, muscle, speed, endurance, or any athletic pursuit, a well-designed program will get you there.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But, that’s not everyone’s priority.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Some folks just want to get a sweat in and don’t care about their squat one-rep max. And that’s totally okay.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Whether or not you should follow a plan comes down to your goal. The more specific/tangible it is, the more likely you’ll need a plan.

I had a mini epiphany the other day–while eating a salad, of all things. 🤯
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I used to gag at the thought of a salad. In my diet maniac days, my daily lunch was spinach and chicken breast topped with a low-calorie vinaigrette. Over time, the sight of anything green and leafy began to shrivel my salivary glands, like a reverse Pavlovian dog.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I eventually got over this disdain by abandoning diet rules when it came to building a salad. Bring on the fat and carbs! Makoto Ginger Dressing was also a big help. And so recently, after finishing a simple, refreshing salad (plus two Reeses mini peanut butter cups), I thought–Whoa. This is what satisfaction feels like. 🤤
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It was such a visceral feeling of contentment, and I wondered how often we experience that on a daily basis. How often are we even checking for it? Because that right there, that sense of joy and fulfillment from something so simple, is the secret to consistency.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Satisfaction.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It’s finishing a workout and thinking, damn, I feel accomplished.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It’s eating a meal and thinking, hell yeah that was GOOD.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It’s cleaning your house and thinking, I love how sparkly my floor looks without cat hair all over it! (Oh wait, that’s just me 😂.)
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Next time you finish a workout, meal, or chore, check in with yourself and ask what your level of satisfaction is. The higher it is, the more likely you are to do the thing. Because satisfaction and gratitude are far more powerful than shame, pressure, and restriction.

If you’ve been an on-and-off dieter, chances are you’ve thrown up your hands in frustration with the process at some point.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If so, this is a gentle reminder that it’s okay to decide that losing those last 10-15 lbs isn’t worth tracking macros, cutting carbs, weighing food, or saying no social obligations.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I know that’s NOT an easy decision, especially if you’ve spent your whole life chasing the “dream body.”
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When it first started occurring to me that maybe I should give up dieting, I resisted. Dragged my feet. Pouted and tried to find ways around it. But deep inside I knew it was for the best.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
You do have the choice to walk away from dieting and make up your own rules for what you want your health and fitness to look like.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Now, giving up dieting does not mean spiraling into a free-for-all of hedonism. It means taking care of yourself without the pressure of needing to see a specific number on the scale. Here are some “on the court” examples of what it can look like.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Which of these do you think would be most beneficial for you?

At times there’s a tsunami in your belly–raging and roaring. Then the moon changes and your soul’s tide turns to a placid bay. I’ve learned not to fight whatever incarnation my ambition takes. It wants it all. It wants nothing. I listen and trust.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
These days, I’ve been being. Like a buoy, I float and bounce while the sea churns, eternally tethered to my truth, my essence, despite the circumstances.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What urgency? I’m always (–ok, usually–) here, now.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Some might call it lazy. But my beingness feels no more lazy than a flower or succulent or tree. Stillness and growth can coincide.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The business, the clients, the fitness, the likes and follows and dollars. Metrics of vanity on darker days. Fruits of dedication on lighter days. My peers are killing it. I’m living it. I applaud us both.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Like the buoy, you and I are where we should be. Ambition and motivation will ebb and flow.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Go with it.
