This is probably more than a quick series can properly communicate on social media but here it goes:
1. Pain is a protective response by the brain and nervous system.
2. Pain comes from an upregulated nervous system and pain upregulates your nervous system.
3. A chronically upregulated nervous system and pain will eventually lead you into burnout.
4. When you reengage with the world after you have been overwhelmed you have to make conscious changes to how you engage with the world. If you don’t, you will likely fall back into old patterns and wind up sliding back and forth between upregulation and burnout.
5. To change pain we don’t just need to change movement patterns, we need to start to feel safer(and be safe) in our body. This is often not a quick process. Small deliberate changes to help you come home to yourself.
PSA- I took liberties with the polyvagal ladder. I am sure some of you won’t like those changes but this is a helpful perspective when educating around chronic pain.

Happy International Women’s Day! I am blessed to live with a fiery and brilliant young woman who makes me proud everyday. I was raised by a woman who taught me to never underestimate my worth and who loved me with all of her. I have an amazing mother-in-law who supports and loves our family and her community. I have strong skilled women in my family, as friends, and I get the privilege of working with them everyday at Bodhi Tree Yoga and in The Chronic Pain Clinic. To the women who hold families together and do thousands of hours of unpaid and underappreciated labour, to the women who raise children and guide them with love, and to the women who continue to fight against rigid gender roles and identities I see you and I appreciate you.
It has become clear that women’s rights and tran’s rights will continue to be repealed and weaponized. Now is the time to step up, speak out, and fight for the rights of all people to have equality, bodily autonomy and reproductive rights.

Happy Trans Day of Visibility! If you are in a position to support, advocate, and create space for trans people you need to step-up. What little headway was created is getting quashed by conservative legislation that makes this world less safe.

Here is the map to move back to a body that feels safe and secure and has less/no pain that persists.
If pain starts from the center and works from the inside out(see previous post). We can use this model to work from the outside in.

As I work to come up with imagery for folks with pain I made this visual to help people learn how pain can turn into pain that persists. I include this visual in each group education I teach for our local pain clinic. Pain starts to change our brain and nervous system. It changes how we think and how we move through the world. Eventually it takes up more and more space in our lives until it is central to everything we do.
We can’t always immediately change the pain but we can start on the outside rings and work our way in towards the center.
Stay tuned for visual #2.

A quick review of the Alpine Boot. I have been using them for winter hiking and shoveling. So far this is a great boot for outdoor winter movement. They keep my feet warm until about -20C. After that my feet get a bit cold.
They are best with more movement. When shoveling my feet get colder than when walking.
Positives- wide toe box, good grip, great ankle movement, easy to take on and off, light weight, reasonably priced, and very comfortable.
The only negatives so far are a slightly stiff sole, boot is a little too short, and I would love for the boot to be warm until -30C+.

So far this is the best minimalist winter boot I have tried!

So far this

Happy New Year!
This year has been challenging. Within those challenges I have been reminded to stop and reflect- to let go into the things that are out of my control, to feel and experience heartbreak but not live in it, to make changes and have impact where I can, and to hope that kindness and compassion wins.
In a world where money and power continue to drive people to make decisions that crush and kill each other, I wish for spaces where you can make the world kinder, safer, and more compassionate.
So may 2024 include:
Peace, ease, kindness, compassion, safety, and love for you all and for all people.
