腹膜播種とは、癌が最初に発生した臓器（原発巣）から他の臓器へと転移する様式のひとつである。
簡単に言えば内臓を包む腹膜に癌が散らばって転移した状態で、胃や大腸、卵巣、胆嚢などにできた癌は、やがて内臓の壁を突き破って、バラバラと腹膜にこぼれ落ちる。
腹膜とは、胃や肝臓などの各臓器を覆っている腹膜と、その臓器全体を覆っている膜である。
次に播種とは、畑に種をまいたような状態を指している。
