We've all been there - one moment everything's fine, and the next minute a thought suddenly pops into our consciousness and sends us spiralling.

Some of us may struggle a bit more to curb the thoughts than others. If you're someone who has a hard time pulling yourself out of an all-consuming session of overthinking, here are two tips to keep in mind for the next time it happens.

We often don’t choose the energies we’re surrounded by in childhood, but we get to choose which kinds of energies and people we want to be around as adults. Sadly, we may take many years, even decades, to realise this.

Old patterns are hard to break.

Even into our twenties and beyond, we may gravitate towards partners, jobs, and friends that carry a familiar chaos and unpredictability that we thought was ‘normal’ in our childhood. Our nervous system remains on high alert in these dynamics - that’s why we may continue to be reactive, snappy, and constantly feel like we need to prove something to others in order to be seen, loved, or understood.

Here’s the thing though - you shouldn’t have to fight to be understood. And you don’t need to be perfect in order to be loved.

There are people out there who will see you, and appreciate you, and celebrate you, just for being you. There are people who will enjoy seeing you calm, seeing you thriving, and who will want you to succeed.

You’ll realise that the people who rushed you and criticised you in the past were mostly just projecting their own anxieties onto you.

You’ll move through the discomfort of feeling misunderstood, until one day you realise that THIS is your ultimate superpower. Dare to be misunderstood. Dare to be imperfect. That is where the rebirth begins. It is the doorway to finding your long-awaited peace. 🪽

Sometimes, there’s nothing lonelier than being loved for something - or someone - you’re not. In some situations, it takes courage to show up authentically and speak your truth, and while it may cause discomfort in the moment, it will be worth it in the end.

It’s about so much more than just the words we say.

When talking to your loved one, how do you make them feel, and how do they make you feel? Do you feel truly seen? Do their expressions and actions match their words? Or does it sometimes feel like the words are just space-fillers?

Do you know when to pause and let them speak?

Are you a safe space for one another - where real and raw emotions are welcomed, not suppressed?

These are some questions to help you gauge the quality and authenticity of your communication in significant relationships. What are some other questions you can think of?💭

When it comes to protecting your peace and honouring your growth, you shouldn’t have to explain yourself to anyone. It’s your journey, and the right people will meet you where you’re at now - not expect you to revert back to past or outdated versions of yourself. 🪽

Sometimes we have to be our own hero… and in the process of saving ourselves, we save others too. 🤲🏽✨🫂

When reflecting on our past behaviour, choices, or ‘mistakes,’ it’s important to remind ourselves that we were doing the best we could at the time with the information we had. We reacted within context of our own life-experiences and level of emotional maturity back then. Every day, the world presents us with new opportunities to evolve and become more self-aware. Every day, we get a chance to do things differently. It’s about choosing growth over comfort. 🌿
