🐣 A little surprise hatch at Dash of Grace! πŸ–€

Our very first Dongxiang chick has hatched!

I had just slipped one Dongxiang egg into the incubator with our other eggs, hoping it might be fertile… and look who decided to make an appearance! πŸ₯°

One tiny black Dongxiang chick from that one little egg. πŸ–€πŸ₯

We are so excited to start hatching our own Dongxiang chickens, known for their beautiful blue eggs. πŸ’™πŸ₯š Hopefully this is the first of many!

Sometimes the smallest experiments bring the sweetest surprises. 🌱

🌱 Almost time to collect baby spinach seeds! 🌱

Spinach prefers cooler weather, so as the days warmed up, mine started bolting and producing seeds. The seeds are now nearly mature and will soon be ready to collect and save for the next planting season.

And while there are still some leaves to harvest, try this: sautΓ© them in a pan with butter and garlic, then add seasoning salt, cream and grated cheese.

You will thank me later! πŸ˜‹πŸŒΏ

Worked for 10s

🫐 Mulberry harvest time! 🫐

Our mulberry tree is producing beautifully! I placed a net underneath it to help catch some of the ripe berries as they fall, so fewer go to waste.

This harvest is going straight into the freezer, ready to add to our morning smoothies throughout the year. There is something so special about preserving what we grow and enjoying the goodness of the garden long after harvest season has passed. πŸŒΏπŸ’œ

πŸŒ±πŸ’œ Look at Our Radicchio! πŸ’œπŸŒ±

Just look at how big our radicchio is getting! 😍 I absolutely love watching vegetables go from tiny seedlings to beautiful, full plants like these.

Radicchio is a type of chicory, known for its slightly bitter flavour and beautiful colouring. As the heads mature, many varieties develop deeper red or purple leaves with contrasting veins. πŸ’œ

It can be: πŸ₯— Eaten fresh in salads
πŸ”₯ Grilled or roasted to soften the bitterness
🍳 Sautéed with a little olive oil and garlic
🍝 Added to pasta and warm dishes

Growing your own food really does make you appreciate every stage of the process. 🌱 And with all that mulch around the plants, we’re helping the soil retain moisture while keeping those roots protected.

Our garden is certainly waking up for spring! πŸ’šπŸŒΏ

🌳❀️ Mulberry Season Is Starting! ❀️🌳

There’s something special about watching a mulberry tree fill up with fruit! Ours are starting to ripen, with berries at all different stages β€” from green to pink and eventually that beautiful deep, dark colour. 😍

Mulberries are one of those wonderfully useful fruits to have growing at home. You can enjoy them fresh straight from the tree, or use them for:

πŸ‡ Homemade jam or preserves
πŸ₯§ Pies, muffins and other baking
πŸ₯€ Smoothies and juices
🍨 Desserts and toppings
❄️ Freezing for later
πŸ“ Fruit sauces and syrups
β˜€οΈ Drying for a naturally sweet snack

And, of course, eating handfuls while you're supposed to be harvesting them! πŸ˜‚

I’m always looking for new ways to use what we grow, so I’d love to know:

How do you use your mulberries? 🌿
Do you make jam, bake with them, freeze them β€” or simply eat them straight from the tree?

Share your favourite ideas or recipes in the comments. πŸ’š

πŸ“πŸ€ Our Pineberries Are Developing! πŸ€πŸ“

Another exciting little update from the garden β€” our pineberries are starting to form! 🌱

Pineberries are such an interesting addition to the edible garden. They are a type of strawberry, but instead of turning the familiar bright red when ripe, the fruit stays creamy white to pale pink, usually with red seeds. 🀍❀️

They’re also known for their unusual flavour, which is often described as strawberry with a hint of pineapple β€” hence the name pineberry. πŸπŸ“

The little green fruits in the photo still have some growing and ripening to do. As they mature, they should become larger and much paler.

I love growing some of the more unusual fruits alongside our everyday favourites. There is always something new developing in the garden! πŸ’š

🫐🌸 The Blueberries Are Coming! 🌸🫐

One of my favourite things about growing your own food is watching every little stage β€” from flowers to tiny developing fruit and eventually something you can pick and eat. πŸ’š

My blueberry bushes are busy flowering, and you can already see the little green berries beginning to form where some of the flowers have finished. 🫐

A few interesting things about blueberries:

🐝 Their beautiful bell-shaped flowers rely heavily on pollinators, especially bees.
🌸 After successful pollination, the flower drops away and the small green berry begins developing.
🫐 The berries will gradually swell and eventually change from green to their familiar blue-purple colour.
🌱 Blueberries love acidic soil, generally around pH 4.5–5.5, which is very different from many other garden plants.
🌿 Mulching around them helps keep their shallow roots cool and moist.

And I absolutely love seeing the calendula flowering around them too β€” a little burst of orange amongst all the berries. 🌼

Now comes the hard part... waiting patiently for them to ripen before the birds discover them! πŸ˜‚πŸ«
