Julia’s raised beds have been filled!
We’ve used a minimum of 40% coconut husk 🥥 combined with 3 different compost sources. Plus a few extras 😉

We are looking forward watching one of the oldest gardens in Woodstock flourish😁

If you look carefully you will be able to see a red spider mite making himself at home on my lemon balm 👀 🍋
You tell tale sign is tiny yellow spots on your leaves, have a look on the bottom of the leaf and there’s a good chance you will find these guys🙁
These mites cause big headaches for many gardeners, especially those growing indoors or in controlled indoor environments
Instead of spraying an insecticide I’d recommend changing the environment your plant is growing in to make it as uncomfortable for the mites as possible😒
They thrive in warm, dry spaces with minimal airflow so do your best to bring up the humidity and get a breeze blowing through your precious plant💦 💨
Another revolutionary option which I think will start to become a lot more popular would be to use biological control. In this case the slightly bigger Phytoselius mite will happily munch away on the red spider mites without damaging your plants 😎

Here’s a quick pic of a freshly installed veggie box at Yvette’s house in Bantry Bay! 🙌 she was and still is our first traditional customer.
In other words she wasn’t a family friend, she found us through Instagram via 🙏

I found a whole bunch of these old pics at the local junkyard (thanks C.fischer)

Posts have been a bit of a rarity recently, I’ve been hard at work but now that I’ve got a bit of a holiday I’ll be sharing pics from my stockpile.

Here we have Carpobrotus edulis- the beloved South African sour fig.

This is a plant that thrives with neglect, well drained soil in a painfully sunny position will do it well ☀️

As the name implies this succulent ground cover produces edible fruit which have been used since ancient times by the indigenous peeps in Africa.

The leaves can be used for a variety of skin conditions from sunburn to herpes and the syrup from the fruit is apparently a powerful laxative 💩

You will see this plant pioneering disturbed sandy areas naturally as well as being propagated for stabilization in certain areas like the West coast of Australia 🇦🇺

These days I see the fruit informally sold dry- they have a salty bitter taste which I’m not a fan of.

As a child I remember breaking the fruit and smelling the distinct grape flavor from fizz pops 🤷‍♂️ 🍇
whats your experience with this little guy?

Now that’s a good feeling 😉💚🎉

Clivia time! 🌷
Want to grow your Clivia’s from seed? Harvest them red juicy berries, clean off the skin and flesh then pop them ONTOP of soiless media like sand or coco coir.
They can take a while to germinate but it’s worth the wait. I remember growing these at college and being fascinated by the miniature leaves looking exactly like a mature plants- just a shrunken down version
If your South African you should be proud of the genus Clivia,, you won’t find it growing naturally anywhere else in the world 🇿🇦
Another stunning pic courtesy of my friendly friend
please don’t sue me for the last picture in this sequence 🙏I had to find one somewhere 😋

Julia’s planter boxers have arrived! I’m looking forward to getting some food growing at one of the oldest houses in Woodstock 👍

Julia practices traditional African healing so we should see some interesting medicinal plants being planted in this garden 💚
Oh and the wood for these boxes has been made from an alien invasive species which I think is pretty damn cool ! 😎
Dimensions are 0.8m x 2.3m 🙂

Here’s a repost from a story I made after finding leftnover passion fruit vines in my neighbors bin! 🎉
1️⃣Find an actively growing section of the vine
2️⃣Cut a section with 3 nodes (normal cut just above the top node and a diagonal cut just below the bottom). We cut around the nodes because this is where the plant hormones will start to become concentrated and initiate rooting.
3️⃣ Trim of the leaves from the bottom 2 nodes
4️⃣ reduce the surface area of the remaining leaves.
5️⃣you can place in a glass of water out of direct sun OR place in a well draining medium and use plastic to increase he humidity.
Rooting hormones? Yes! They will improve success rates and root density but if don’t have any around and are using an easy to root plant such as a granadilla don’t worry about it. I found high humidity environments have helped quick rooting plants by reducing transpiration (amount of water plants are drinking 💧)

💚 Soil Loving 🙂

I got the spontaneous idea of making this while mixing soil last week Friday. The hands on process and the end result of that idea turned out to be really satisfying 👌
I think I’ll be doing this again with the next batch 😋

This is really exciting!😁
This blue mould is a trichoderma species. These fungi are present in all soils and form synergic (helpful) relationships with plant roots.😎
They are even used as a biological control to control pathogens in soil💪
I learnt this when I found these blue colonies growing on macadamia seeds while working in Limpopo
Anyway these blue beauties were found growing on my coffee ground stockpile 👌👍🙌

If you look in his boot you’ll see a bag of custom OMF soil mix- crossing fingers for the adjustments made 🤞structure was fantastic but after sending it for analysis PH came back as 7.1- gypsum and coffee grounds have been added to bring it down. Hopefully in the right proportions 🤷‍♂️😋
