Did you know humans and cats can benefit from catnip tea? 🌿
Making catnip tea is a simple process whether you're preparing it as a calming drink for yourself or a fun treat for your cat!
For Humans
Catnip tea has a woodsy, minty, and slightly bitter flavor. It is often used for relaxation, aiding sleep, or soothing minor stomach discomfort.
Ingredients: 1–2 teaspoons of dried catnip or 3 teaspoons of fresh catnip per cup of water.
Boil: Bring water to a boil, then remove it from the heat.
Steep: Pour the hot water over the catnip and let it steep for 10 to 15 minutes.
Flavor: Add honey, lemon juice, or sugar to taste to help mask the bitterness.
Note: Expectant mothers should avoid catnip tea as it can stimulate the uterus.
For Cats
When served to cats, catnip tea can be a stimulating treat or a way to encourage hydration. For cats, the recipe must be simplified to ensure it is safe.
Ingredients: 1 tablespoon of dried catnip and 2 cups of water.
Boil: Boil the water and remove it from the heat.
Steep: Steep the catnip for about 3 to 5 minutes.
Cool (Crucial): You must let the tea cool completely before serving. You can strain it over ice to speed up the process so it doesn't burn your cat's tongue.
Serve: Pour into their favorite bowl.
If they are hesitant, try sprinkling a little dry catnip on top.
Avoid: Do not add honey, lemon, or sugar to tea intended for cats.
Variations for Feline Iced Treats:
Pour the cooled tea into ice cube trays and freeze them for a refreshing summer treat.
Flavor Boost: Add a splash of cat-safe chicken broth (low sodium, no onion/garlic) or a bit of cat milk to make it more enticing for picky eaters.
Health Checks: Avoid catnip if your cat has asthma (particles can cause coughing) or hyperthyroidism (catnip contains iodine)
