Every blood donation has the power to save lives.
On World Blood Donor Day, we recognise and thank the individuals who give the invaluable gift of blood donation a simple act that can make a life-saving difference to patients undergoing surgery, cancer treatment, trauma care, childbirth complications and the management of chronic illnesses.
Regular blood donation helps ensure that safe blood is available when it is needed most. If you are able to donate, consider becoming a blood donor and helping support the health and wellbeing of others in your community.

Appetite is far more complex than simply feeling hungry.
Research continues to show that the brain plays a major role in regulating appetite, cravings, energy balance and weight. Scientists studying obesity have identified a number of brain chemicals and pathways that influence when we feel hungry, when we feel full, and how our bodies respond to food.
Understanding obesity as a chronic medical condition, influenced by biology, hormones, metabolism and brain signalling, helps move the conversation away from blame and towards science, compassion and effective long-term care.
This insightful video from BrainFacts.org explores the connection between appetite, obesity, and the brain.

Metabolic health is not determined by single foods but by consistent patterns over time. In this series, we highlight five practical food swaps that can support more stable blood glucose levels, improved satiety and better long-term health outcomes. These are not restrictive measures, but evidence-informed adjustments: choosing higher fibre carbohydrates, incorporating protein and healthy fats, and reducing unnecessary refined sugars. Many of the day-to-day symptoms people experience - fluctuating energy, persistent hunger, or weight gain are often a reflection of underlying metabolic health rather than isolated dietary choices. The goal is not perfection, but consistency. Small, sustainable changes remain one of the most effective ways to support metabolic health and reduce future risk.

Men’s health matters!
Not only when symptoms appear, but through prevention, early intervention and long-term lifestyle care. During Men’s Health Awareness Month this June, we encourage men to take a proactive approach to their health by prioritising regular health check-ups, blood pressure and cholesterol screening, blood sugar monitoring, healthy nutrition, physical activity, sleep, stress management and mental wellbeing. Many chronic conditions such as type 2 diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease and metabolic syndrome can develop gradually over time, often without obvious symptoms in the early stages. Small, sustainable lifestyle changes and regular medical care can make a meaningful difference to long-term health outcomes.

Your blood pressure numbers tell an important story about your overall cardiovascular and metabolic health. High blood pressure often develops silently, without obvious symptoms, but over time it can increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, kidneydisease and other serious health complications.
Understanding what your readings mean is the first step toward prevention and better long-term health. Lifestyle factors such as nutrition, movement, sleep, stressmanagement and maintaining a healthy weight all play an important role in keeping blood pressure under control. Regular monitoring can help detect changes early and create opportunities for intervention before complications develop. If your readings are consistently elevated, it’s important to seek medical advice and work toward sustainable lifestyle changes.
At East Rand Institute of Metabolic Medicine, we believe prevention, education and early intervention are key to protecting long-term metabolic and cardiovascular health.
