This month’s blog post was inspired by Dr. Courtney Conley, chiropractor and co-founder of Gait Happens—a team of clinicians dedicated to foot health and gait mechanics. While listening to her discuss foot strength on a podcast, one phrase stood out: “With modern convenience comes responsibility.”
Dr. Conley was specifically referring to how we move throughout our day and what that means for our overall strength and mobility—starting right at our feet, which form the vital base of our kinetic chain (linking feet, ankles, knees, hips, and spine).
There is no denying that we are spoiled by convenience. Food, groceries, clothing- almost anything can be delivered at the touch of a button; the necessity to walk long distances has been largely eliminated, and machines handle most physical labour. While these advancements are convenient, they come at a hidden cost: most of us simply aren't moving enough. And when we do move, are we moving in a way that truly serves our bodies?
Our modern conveniences aren’t always working in our favour. So, what exactly is our responsibility? It is to become active, conscious participants in our own well-being—making deliberate choices to challenge ourselves and lean into healthy discomfort.
