Hello Team Alba the Brave! 🧡

This is Alba’s Aunty Nats speaking! 👋

While our brave girl is fighting off the last of those horrible leukemia cells in Cape Town for the next 24 days, I wanted to share a little project Alba and I have been working on. 🥰

As many of you know, Alba LOVES manga. Trust me, I have a list of at least 200 titles she’s given me for our future bookstore (coming to Mossel Bay soon 😉📚).

Alba’s story is important to share — to help other kids and families understand they aren’t alone, and to show people what this horrible disease really looks like. But Alba is so much more than her illness. She’s creative, imaginative, curious and completely obsessed with the worlds and characters she finds in manga.

So we thought… why not create one of her own? 🥹

Now, I am NOT an author by any means 🤣 — but I’m giving it a go with Alba’s help… and maybe a little ChatGPT (regrettably, my biggest carbon footprint 😂🌍).

✨ Introducing KYA AKATSUKI! ✨

Kya (Alba's second name) and Akatsuki both carry meanings connected to dawn/daybreak, giving her the beautiful idea of “the girl who carries dawn.” 🌅 Here is a little description of the story so far...

Kya is battling the Crimson Curse, a mysterious force that only a few people can see. It spreads through invisible shadows, draining the colour and hope from the world.

Kya discovers she carries the rare Dawn Heart, giving her the power to purify the curse — but every battle comes at a cost. Along the way, she forms friendships, faces powerful enemies and learns that courage isn’t about never being afraid… it’s about choosing to keep going.

Now Alba is understandably exhausted, so her amazing creative brain needs a little rest. 🧡

Which is where YOU come in!

Give us your ideas — characters, creatures, villains, friendships, magical powers, settings, plot twists… whatever you’ve got! 🤯

Alba will be reading your ideas while she’s stuck in isolation, and who knows — your idea might just become part of Kya’s story! 👀📖

To Alba; keep fighting, keep dreaming, and never lose that incredible imagination of yours. 🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡

Now let’s give this girl something amazing to read over the next 24 days.

Thank you for helping us build Kya’s world!

Annnnnnd… GO!!! 🚀📚✨

Meet Alba – Our 2026 Spring Cake Fair Beneficiary 🌸

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, and this year, our The Spring Cake Fair is especially close to our hearts.

We are honoured to introduce Alba Overbeeke, affectionately known as Alba the Brave, as the beneficiary of this year’s The Spring Cake Fair

Alba is a courageous 13-year-old Garden Route girl who is facing her second battle with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL). After being diagnosed at just four years old and years of treatment, Alba celebrated five years cancer-free in 2025. Sadly, shortly after her 13th birthday, she was diagnosed with a relapse.

She is now undergoing intensive treatment in Cape Town and urgently needs a stem cell (bone marrow) transplant, with a suitable donor being essential for her treatment.

Last year, our incredible cake community came together and raised R35,000 for Alexander. This year, we hope to come together once again and raise R35,000 for Alba. 💛

A LOT for us to take in today!

They’ve just finished Alba's lumbar puncture, and she’ll be hooked up to her immunotherapy treatment from early this afternoon.

These first few days are when we’re likely to see side effects like fevers and body aches, as her immune system gets to work figuring out what’s happening. For those of you who want to understand what the treatment is doing: it’s essentially getting Alba’s T-cells to recognise and target the B-cells — including the leukaemia cells — and destroy them. So her immune system is understandably not going to be particularly happy about it!

Then we just need to hope and pray that, after this first week, her body settles into the treatment and she spends the rest of her time here bored🤞

After that, there’ll be a break of a couple of weeks before she needs to have her stem cell transplant.

Thank you, as always, for all your love, positive thoughts, prayers and support 🥰🧡
