PROTO CARE ACADEMY™ 🎉

What began with an Excel spreadsheet grew into a proof of concept and real-world pilot in Saudi Arabia — and has now been rebuilt, expanded and prepared for an international launch.

This story belongs to many hands: the original founders, nurses and nursing leaders who trusted and tested the first solution, the accreditation teams who encountered it in practice, and the architects, volunteer developers and reviewers who helped build what Proto Care Academy™ has become today.

To every one of you: thank you. 💙

Now it is almost time to open the doors to nurses and nursing organisations around the world.

𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲. 💙

Keegan was 19 years old when he joined Proto Care Pty Ltd.

Young. Early in his development career. Very little real-world experience.
But plenty of potential.

Recently, Keegan wrote something about his experience with our Founder Suzette Ferreira, that stopped us in our tracks:
“Not many people would take a chance on a young developer with practically no experience...”

Perhaps that is exactly where organisations need to think differently.

How does a young developer gain experience when every opportunity requires them to already have it?

Someone has to open the first door.

At , opening that door never meant lowering the standard.
Keegan was given real responsibilities within a real software development environment. He had to learn our codebase, development standards and Git workflows. His work went through pull request reviews. He received feedback. He was expected to communicate, collaborate, solve problems and take accountability for what he produced.

And then something wonderful happened.

He proved himself.

Keegan developed across frontend and backend environments, contributed directly to Proto Care functionality and grew into someone trusted to conduct pull request reviews for other developers.

He supported newly onboarded contributors. He helped protect development standards. He served as a GP Platform Team Lead. And despite being one of the youngest people in the room, others increasingly trusted his technical judgement.

That is what opportunity can do.

Not opportunity without accountability.

Not giving someone a title they have not earned.

But giving someone a place to learn, a meaningful piece of work, proper guidance, clear expectations and the opportunity to show you what they can become.

To organisations, founders and technology leaders: when capacity allows, consider opening that first door for someone.

Give the 19-year-old a chance.

Give the graduate without the three years of experience a chance.

Give the junior something meaningful enough that they can actually demonstrate what they are capable of.

A few people have asked us recently: Has Proto Care Pty Ltd pivoted away from building its EHR ecosystem?

Not at all.

™ has always been there. It is our fourth pillar — alongside our Patient, Practice & Hospital platforms.

So why an Academy?

We are not building it simply to deliver courses, record attendance & issue certificates.

We are building:
A longitudinal professional-development layer connected to real clinical practice.

🤳Meet Elizabeth as indicated on the screenshot/attached image…..

Inside Proto Care Academy™, she completes a Patient-Centred Communication course.

She learns to listen first, use plain language, apply teach-back, recognise when a patient does not truly understand, use appropriate interpreter support & document patient education correctly.

She completes an applied scenario & receives personalised feedback from ™.

Course done. Certificate issued.

In a traditional LMS, that might be where the story ends.

For us, that’s where it gets interesting.

RN Elizabeth returns to the ward & educates real patients — and that education becomes part of the clinical record.

Now imagine our Hospital Portal & Academy communicating.

The Academy could recognise evidence of Elizabeth applying that learning in clinical practice.

Did she provide patient education?
Did she document what was taught?
Did she verify understanding?
Is teach-back becoming part of her practice?
Does she need coaching?

Suddenly, we have moved from:

Course completed → Certificate issued ✅

to:

Learn → Apply → Document → Evidence → Coach → Improve

Imagine her development record showing learning completed, assessment passed, relevant clinical activities performed, CF feedback received & improvement over time.

Suzie AI™ might notice:

“Elizabeth, your documentation consistently records what was taught & patient understanding. In three recent encounters, teach-back was not documented. Consider recording how understanding was verified.”

That is not AI replacing the Clinical Facilitator.

It gives the RN and CF better evidence to support development.

Eventually we can distinguish between:

Education — Did she learn it?
Application — Did she use it?
Documentation — Did she record it appropriately?
Competency — Can she demonstrate it safely?
Sustained practice — Is she doing it consistently?

That is why Proto Care Academy™ belongs inside our EHR ecosystem.

We don’t only want to know that an HCP attended training.

We want to close the gap between education and what actually happens at the bedside.

So no, Proto Care has not pivoted away from its EHR ecosystem.

We are connecting the pieces.

Patient. Healthcare professional. Education. Competency. Clinical practice. Evidence. Continuous improvement.

Every road should lead back to the same place:
👉 Better & safer patient care 💙

Attendance is only the beginning.

What matters is whether that learning translates into competency at the bedside — and ultimately, better care for the patient 💙

Happy Workers’ Day | 1 May 🇿🇦

Workers’ Day reminds us of a powerful truth — the ability to work, to contribute, and to build something meaningful is not something to take for granted.

In , this day carries deep significance. It reflects not only the global fight for workers’ rights, but also our own journey through inequality, resilience, and transformation. It honours those who stood up, organised, and helped shape a more just and inclusive society.

Today, I find myself reflecting with gratitude.
- Grateful that I get to work.
- Grateful that I get to build.
- And especially grateful for the people building alongside me.

To my entire Proto Care (Pty) Ltd team — thank you. Your commitment, your growth, and your belief in what we are creating together mean more than words can fully capture.💙

Even while bootstrapping, with support between Shaper, Absa Group, Cloudflare and AWS Startup Credits, and my own contributions, and every volunteer, we are doing something that matters. We are not just building a platform — we are contributing to South Africa’s future by:
